{blackbabes} Serena Williams pulls U.S. level at Hopman Cup

PERTH, Australia — Serena Williams overcame a sluggish start to power past Maria Sakkari in straight-sets at the Hopman Cup on Monday in her first competitive match since melting down in the U.S. Open final.

The 37-year-old was rusty and down an early break but did enough to record a comfortable 7-6 (3), 6-2 victory in one hour and 44 minutes in the women's singles match.

The result levelled the tie between the United States and Greece, but Williams and playing partner Frances Tiafoe lost the later mixed doubles match in three sets to Sakkari and Stefanos Tsitsipas .

Even though both her ankles were strapped and required medical attention during the change of sets, Williams moved freely and looked sharper as the match wore on.

"It was my first match back. I was making a lot of errors," Williams said. "It was great to be back out on match day."

The 23-time Grand Slam singles champion lost an exhibition match against sister Venus in Abu Dhabi last week, but the Hopman Cup is her first competitive event since her controversial defeat to Japan's Naomi Osaka at Flushing Meadows in September.

It was an error-strewn start for Williams, who struggled to land her first serve and was broken in the third game. She could have been in a bigger hole if not for saving break points in her first and third service games.

A vocal Williams tried to pump herself up in a bid to shake off the stupor and raised her arms skyward after holding serve in the fifth game. A confident Sakkari held the edge until losing her nerve attempting to close out the set in the 10th game.

Williams then found her range and dominated the tie break to wrap up the first set in 63 minutes. She broke twice in the second set and closed it out with an ace.

Williams is a two-time Hopman Cup winner, having triumphed in 2003 with James Blake and five years later alongside Mardy Fish.

In the earlier men's singles match, No.15 ranked Tsitsipas overcame a second set wobble to defeat Tiafoe 6-3, 6-7 (3), 6-3. It was a confidence boost for the Greek rising star after his shock straight-sets loss to unheralded British played Cameron Norrie on Saturday.

The fancied Greece kept its tournament alive with a 4-1, 1-4, 4-2 victory in the mixed doubles after an opening defeat against Britain.

The United States will battle Switzerland in a showpiece fixture on Tuesday, which pits Williams against fellow tennis legend Roger Federer in the mixed doubles.

"As a player it's something that you would dream of playing Roger Federer," Williams told reporters. "It's only mixed doubles, but still it's like a dream come true for me."

The 37-year-olds have won 43 Grand Slam singles titles between them — Federer a record 20 in men's tennis — and are arguably the best ever.

The match in Perth is expected to be a sellout.

"I really look forward to sharing the stadium with him," said Williams, who will be chasing a record-equaling 24th major at the Australian Open next month. "It's going to be special."

Their showdown has added spice, with the United States' title hopes hanging by a thread after the loss to Greece.

{blackbabes} Tennis royalty Federer and Serena back for yet another season

Perth (Australia) (AFP) - Tennis royalty Roger Federer and Serena Williams have been pounding balls across the net for more than 20 years and they are back for yet another season, starting in Perth at the mixed teams Hopman Cup from Saturday.

Both 37 years old and with 43 Grand Slam singles titles between them, Federer is now a father and Williams a mother but tennis keeps calling, with neither showing any sign of quitting.

Flying Federer leads Switzerland in defence of the Hopman Cup title he won alongside Belinda Bencic earlier this year, with the pair teaming up once again.

Williams returns to the country for the first time since her famous Australian Open win in 2017, when eight-weeks pregnant with baby Alexis Olympia.

She partners rising American star Frances Tiafoe in her fifth visit to Western Australia.

In a mouthwatering prospect, Switzerland play the United States on January 1 with two of the greatest players ever facing each other in the mixed doubles.

Federer conceded it was a once-in-a-lifetime match-up and one he was looking forward to.

"We'll probably play it down a little bit and say it's not that big of a deal for us, it's just another tennis match, but it really isn't because it's probably going to happen once and never again," he said on Thursday.

The Swiss great has spent the off-season training hard ahead of the defence of his Australian Open title and said he was happy with his fitness.

"The last three or four weeks have been very intense. I'm very excited and motivated for this next season."

The last two seasons the Swiss legend started in Perth, he went on to win the opening Grand Slam of the year.

- 'Went too far' -

Williams played an exhibition against sister Venus in Abu Dhabi this week, but Perth will be her first competitive event since her meltdown in the US Open final this year.

She received a code violation for coaching, a penalty point for racquet abuse and a game penalty for calling the umpire a "liar" and a "thief" during her defeat by Naomi Osaka.

Federer later said Williams "went too far" and should have walked away, adding an edge to their upcoming encounter.

Williams opted not to talk about the rant in Abu Dhabi, instead preferring to look forward.

"My fitness, I feel like I'm pretty fit," she said, adding that she was excited by another season as she primes to win an eighth crown at Melbourne Park to match the record 24 Grand Slam titles held by Margaret Court.

"I haven't played with Frances in mixed doubles before, but have watched him from afar this year. He has a very bright future and I'm looking forward to being on court with him, it will be a lot of fun," she said.

Tiafoe, 20, is considered one of the world's most impressive Next Gen stars.

He won his first singles title in February to become the youngest American champion on tour since Andy Roddick in 2002 and hit a career high ranking of 38 in August.

"I'm extremely nervous to play with Serena, a complete legend," he admitted. "But I'm sure it'll be fine."

Germans Alexander Zverev and Angelique Kerber, the beaten 2018 finalists, form a formidable partnership in the way of Switzerland and the United States.

Zverev had a breakout 2018 season and is now ranked world number four, one behind Federer, while Kerber is world number two after winning Wimbledon, where she beat Williams in the final.

Two-time Grand Slam champion Garbine Muguruza partners David Ferrer for Spain while perennial favourites France are back with Lucas Pouille and Alize Cornet.

Australia (Matt Ebdon/Ashleigh Barty), Greece (Stefanos Tsitsipas/Maria Sakkari) and Britain (Cameron Norrie/Katie Boulter) make up the field.

{blackbabes} Serena eyes 'bigger and better things' after US Open drama

Abu Dhabi (AFP) - Serena Williams would not discuss the incidents that unfolded during the US Open final she lost to Naomi Osaka in September and is choosing to "move on to bigger and better things", the American told reporters in Abu Dhabi on Thursday.

In her first on-court appearance since that controversial final in New York, Williams lost an exhibition match to her sister Venus 4-6, 6-3, 10-8 in the UAE capital and will now head straight to Perth to compete in the Hopman Cup alongside her countryman Frances Tiafoe.

Asked if the US Open final is a topic she'd like to avoid as the new season kicks off, Serena said: "I don't avoid anything. I just don't have time to talk about that. I talked about it, everyone talked about it for months and months and months and it's best to move on to bigger and better things."

Bigger and better things are definitely on Serena's mind as she admitted earlier in the day the significance of Margaret Court's all-time record of 24 Grand Slam titles when it comes to her goals for 2019.

Williams twice missed out on a chance to tie Court's mark in 2018, losing both the Wimbledon and US Open finals in the span of the last six months.

The 23-time major champion, who has played just seven events since her return from maternity leave in March, will be chasing history once again at the Australian Open in January.

"(The number 24) has always been significant since I got 22, then 23. It's something that I clearly want but I have to be able to get there and beat a lot of good players to get it," said Serena.

The 36-year-old looked in good shape in her tight defeat to Venus on Thursday and can take confidence from the high level they both showcased.

"My fitness, I feel like I'm pretty fit," Serena said. "I was running and running and never got tired except for one point but then I got over it in 20 seconds, so I think that was really the highlight for me."

Venus will begin her 2019 season at the WTA event in Auckland but will be without a coach having ended her 11-year collaboration with David Witt last month.

"I love everyone that I work with, and I still love them, so it's just all love. I haven't brought on anyone yet, so we'll see what happens," said Venus.

The 38-year-old wasn't specific when describing what she's looking for in a coach but said it was important "that they're as easy as going as I am, that's all that matters".

{blackbabes} Serena welcomes rule change on players back from pregnancy

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates — Serena Williams has welcomed the extra protection given to new mothers when they return to the women's tennis tour.

"It's great," the 23-time Grand Slam champion said on Thursday in quotes published by BBC Sport. "Women that are younger can go out there and have kids and not have to worry about it, and not have to wait until the twilight of their years to have children."

The WTA rule changes were agreed on this month and are meant to ensure players are not penalized after they return from pregnancy or an injury that causes a long absence.

The changes were prompted in part by the experiences of former No. 1 players Williams and Victoria Azarenka, both of whom returned to competition after giving birth.

The WTA announced that players returning to the tour may use a special ranking for up to three years after the birth of a child, and the exemption can be used for seedings at big events.

"Having gone through the experience myself really opened my eyes. Would I have done it sooner had there been different rule changes? I don't know," Williams said in Abu Dhabi ahead of an exhibition tournament where she played her sister Venus in a one-off match.

"But now there is an opportunity, people don't have to ask that question."

Williams was unseeded at the French Open in her first major since the birth of her daughter — despite having won the previous major she played, the 2017 Australian Open. Williams was seeded 25th at Wimbledon and 17th at the U.S. Open, and she reached the finals and lost at both of those majors.

{blackbabes} Serena voted AP Female Athlete of the Year for 5th time

She showed up in Paris wearing a black catsuit, a reminder that nobody can command the Grand Slam stage quite like Serena Williams.

She reached the finals at Wimbledon and the U.S. Open, proving again how well she can play no matter how little she practices.

Williams didn't win those or any other tournaments, which in every other situation might have made for a forgettable year.

In 2018, it was a remarkable one.

Her rapid return to tennis after a health scare following childbirth was a victory in itself, and for that, Williams was voted The Associated Press Female Athlete of the Year for the fifth time.

Williams received 93 points in balloting by U.S. editors and news directors announced Wednesday, while gymnast Simone Biles was second with 68. Notre Dame basketball player Arike Ogunbowale was third, while Olympic snowboarder Chloe Kim and swimmer Katie Ledecky, the 2017 winner, rounded out the top five.

All of those players won a title or titles in 2018, while Williams had to settle for just coming close a couple of times.

Now 37 and a new mother facing some players who weren't even born when she turned pro in 1995, Williams isn't the same person who ruthlessly ran her way to 23 Grand Slam singles titles - the last of which came at the 2017 Australian Open when she was pregnant.

''I'm still waiting to get to be the Serena that I was, and I don't know if I'll ever be that, physically, emotionally, mentally. But I'm on my way,'' Williams said on the eve of the U.S. Open final. ''I feel like I still have a ways to go. Once I get there, I'll be able to play even hopefully better.''

The Male Athlete of the Year will be announced Thursday.

The women's award has been won more only by Babe Didrikson Zaharias, whose six wins included one for track and five for golf.

Williams' previous times winning the AP honor, in 2002, 2009, 2013 and 2015, were because of her dominance.

This one was about her perseverance.

Williams developed blood clots after giving birth to daughter Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr. on Sept. 1, 2017, and four surgeries would follow. She returned to the WTA Tour in March and played in just a pair of events before the French Open, where she competed in a skin-tight, full-length black catsuit .

She said the outfit - worn partly for health reasons because of the clots - made her feel like a superhero, but her game was rarely in superstar shape. She had to withdraw in Paris because of a right pectoral injury and didn't play again until Wimbledon, where she lost to Angelique Kerber in the final.

Williams came up short again in New York, where her loss to Naomi Osaka in the final will be remembered best for her outburst toward chair umpire Carlos Ramos, who had penalized Williams for receiving coaching and later penalized her an entire game for calling him a ''thief'' while arguing.

That loss leaves her one major title shy of Margaret Court's record as she starts play next year in a WTA Tour that will look different in part because of new rules coming about after issues involving Williams. Players returning to the tour may use a ''special ranking'' for up to three years from the birth of a child, and the exemption can be used for seedings at big events. Also, the tour says players can wear leggings or compression shorts at its tournaments without a skirt over them.

Williams insists she is still driven to play and win as much if not more than before she was a mother. That drive is the focus of a Nike ad showing her in action.

''Getting this far, crazy,'' it says. ''Stopping now, crazier.''

Williams won't.

''I'm still on the way up,'' she said. ''There's still much more that I plan on doing.''

The rest of the top five:

Simone Biles, gymnastics . The American won four golds and six medals overall in the world championships in Qatar, giving her 20 in her career to tie Russia's Svetlana Khorkina for the most by a female gymnast.

Arike Ogunbowale, women's basketball . She hit one jumper to knock off previously unbeaten Connecticut in the Final Four, then a 3-pointer in the championship game to lift Notre Dame over Mississippi State.

Chloe Kim, snowboarding . At 17, the Californian won the halfpipe Olympic gold medal in South Korea, where her parents were from before they immigrated to the United States.

Katie Ledecky, swimming . The 21-year-old U.S. Olympian tuned up for the 2020 Games in Tokyo by winning five medals in the city at the Pan Pacific Championships.

{blackbabes} The Resident EP Hints at 'Frustrating' Love Story Ahead for Mina and AJ

The Resident Season 2

An epidemic of love triangles is sweeping through Chastain Park Memorial Hospital.

When The Resident returns in January, Devon won't be the only doctor caught between two love interests: Mina will have to contend with matters of the heart, too. Although the gifted surgeon doesn't know it yet, her mentor, Dr. AJ Austin, is in love with her — and the Fox drama won't be ignoring that fact, despite Mina's ongoing involvement with Micah Stevens.

"It's a tricky one for us, because there's always a great debate of whether [AJ] and Mina will cross a line at some point when Micah is in the picture," executive producer Todd Harthan tells TVLine. "For now, what we are enjoying is this series of near-misses and bad timing [for Mina and AJ]."

And Mina's interest in Micah isn't the only hurdle for AJ to clear. He also has a personal rule that forbids him from getting involved with someone he is mentoring — and that rule will leave AJ highly conflicted in forthcoming episodes, according to Harthan.

"He does not want to complicate such a meaningful and powerful professional relationship by crossing a personal line," he says. "Until they are equals and he is not her superior, he is just not comfortable crossing that line. It's something that we're going to play with, and it'll give us good drama in the back half [of Season 2]."

In short? If you're hoping to see this twosome give it a go, you'll have to be patient: Harthan says the Mina/AJ arc will "frustrate the audience, hopefully in a good way" when the show's sophomore year resumes.

The Resident returns Monday, Jan. 14, at 8/7c on Fox.

{blackbabes} Janet Jackson, Def Leppard, Stevie Nicks join Rock Hall of Fame

NEW YORK — Janet Jackson joins her brother Michael and the Jackson 5 as members of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, earning induction on Thursday along with Stevie Nicks and the top fan vote-getter, Def Leppard.

Radiohead, the Cure, Roxy Music and the Zombies will also be ushered in next spring at the 34th induction ceremony. It will be held March 29 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

Jackson's induction comes after her third time as nominee and many saw it as overdue, given her prowess as a hitmaker with "All For You," "That's the Way Love Goes," "Nasty," "Together Again" and "What Have You Done For Me Lately."

Her career has suffered from the fallout after the infamous 2004 Super Bowl appearance where her bare breast was briefly exposed. Jackson became eligible for the rock hall in 2007 and wasn't nominated until 2016.

The Roots' Questlove, in a social media post earlier this year, said her exclusion had been "highly criminal." He cited the influence of her 1986 album "Control," which he said set off the New Jack Swing trend.

"This was no one's kid sister," he wrote.

It will be Nicks' second induction into the rock hall, since she's already there as a member of Fleetwood Mac. She launched a solo career in 1981 with her duet with the late Tom Petty, "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around." Other hits followed, including "Edge of Seventeen," "Stand Back" and "I Will Run to You."

Def Leppard earned more than half a million votes from fans, which are incorporated into more than 1,000 ballots from artists, historians, industry professionals and past winners in deciding who gets honoured. The British heavy metal band with a pop sheen were huge sellers in the 1980s on the back of songs like "Photograph" and "Pour Some Sugar on Me."

Frontman Joe Elliott said he was initially ambivalent toward the honour until Jon Bon Jovi suggested it would change his life.

"When I look at the list of who's in, it's just obvious you'd want to be in that club, isn't it?" he told Billboard earlier this year. "When you think that every band that means anything in the world, starting from the Beatles and the Stones and any artist that influenced them — your Chuck Berrys, your Little Richards, etc., etc. — then of course you want to be in. Why wouldn't you?"

Def Leppard, Nicks and Roxy Music were voted in during their first years as nominees. Other 2019 nominees who didn't make the cut included LL Cool J, Devo, Rage Against the Machine, MC5, John Prine, Todd Rundgren and Kraftwerk.

There's some question about whether Radiohead will shrug its collective shoulder as a nominee. The English band seemed like generic grunge rockers on their initial hit "Creep," but with the album "OK Computer" and beyond have become consistent sonic pioneers. Among its rock hall class, Radiohead has the most impact on the current music scene.

In an interview with Rolling Stone earlier this year, Radiohead's Jonny Greenwood said "I don't care" when asked about the rock hall. Bandmate Ed O'Brien said, "culturally, I don't understand it. I think it might be a quintessentially American thing."

The Cure and frontman Robert Smith resist their initial label as goth rockers, champions of fans who like black makeup, black clothes and darkly romantic songs. They have a durable catalogue of hits, including "Friday I'm in Love," "Boys Don't Cry," "Pictures of You" and "Let's Go to Bed."

Roxy Music came out of the 1970s progressive rock scene and had hits with "Love is the Drug" and "More Than This." Dapper member Bryan Ferry had a successful solo career and Brian Eno has been an influential producer.

The heyday of British rockers the Zombies' career was the 1960s, with big sellers "She's Not There" and "Time of the Season."

The hall will announce ticket sales for March's ceremony next month. HBO and SiriusXM will carry the event.

{blackbabes} Naomie Harris To Topline Cop Thriller ‘Black And Blue’ For Screen Gems

Oscar nominee Naomie Harris (Moonlight) has signed on as the lead in the Sony Screen Gems body cam cop thriller Black And Blue (formally titled Exposure), which is being directed by Deon Taylor based on a screenplay from Peter A. Dowling.

The plot centers on a rookie cop (Harris) in New Orleans who witnesses corrupt officers murdering a drug dealer, an event that is captured by her body cam. When they then fail to execute her she escapes and is hunted throughout the night by the narcs who are desperate to destroy the incriminating footage.

Sean Sorensen of Royal Viking Entertainment is producing with Taylor's Hidden Empire Film Group production shingle. Hidden Empire partner Roxanne Avent will serve as exec producer while Eric Paquette is overseeing the project for Screen Gems.

Harris has starred in tentpole films like Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, James Bond films Skyfall and Spectre and most recently Warner Bros' Rampage pic opposite Dwayne Johnson. She can be heard in Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle, the long-awaited Jungle Book take from Andy Serkis, which debuted last week on Netflix.

Harris is repped by WME, Untitled Entertainment, Tavistock Wood, and Ziffren Brittenham.

{blackbabes} Janelle Monáe Joins Gloria Steinem Biopic ‘The Glorias: A Life On The Road’

Janelle Monáe has come aboard The Glorias: A Life on the Road, the Gloria Steinem biopic that has Julianne Moore and Alicia Vikander playing the feminist and social-political activist at various stages of her life. Julie Taymor is directing the film which is based on Steinem's memoir.

This seems like a befitting project for Monáe who, like Steinem, is an outspoken human rights advocate.  Earlier this year, the multiple Grammy nominee called for a Time's Up in the music industry to end discrimination, inequality, harassment and the abuse of power.

The Glorias will follow Steinem's journey to become a crusader for equal rights and her groundbreaking work as a journalist and campaigner.

Alex Saks is producing the pic, via Fifty-Four Pictures, with Taymor and Lynn Hendee. Steinem and Amy Richards are exec producers as filming is slated to start January in Savannah, GA.

Monáe, who broke onto the acting scene with standout performances in the 2016 films Moonlight and Hidden Figures, will next appear in the Robert Zemeckis-helmed Welcome to Marwen from DreamWorks/Universal. Her company, Wondaland Pictures, also recently set a first-look film production deal at Universal.

In addition, Monáe's forthcoming slate includes STX's animated release UglyDolls, Disney's live-action Lady and the Tramp remake, and the Harriet Tubman pic from Focus Features.

She's repped by Wondaland Management, WME, and Ziffren Brittenham.

{blackbabes} Eva Marcille wants a good night of sleep for Christmas

Between keeping it glam on "The Real Housewives of Atlanta" and taking care of a newborn, Eva Marcille just wants some quality shut-eye this Christmas.

"A gift I would love to get this season is anything to help me sleep," the "RHOA" star, 34, told Page Six recently. "So an eye mask, a bed, sleeping pill, anything to help me go to sleep, that's what I'll take."

Marcille, who welcomed a baby boy in April with husband Michael Sterling, gushed that the best gift she ever received was when he proposed to her on Christmas Day in 2017. The couple's November nuptials were captured by Bravo cameras and will air during the franchise's finale episode.

Another one of Marcille's favorite gifts from her husband: Two pairs of house shoes.

"I got a gift that I thought was a horrible gift and it ended up being great," she explained. "One of the first gifts he gave me were two pairs of white house shoes, and I was like 'Why?' and he was like 'Because the house shoes you wear are really dirty and you need new house shoes,' so he bought me two pairs and I thought it was like really stupid, but then when I got the old pair dirty and I needed a new pair, I had more house shoes!"

"It ended up being the gift that kept giving," she said.
