{blackbabes} Serena Williams captures 1st title in comeback

STANFORD, Calif. (AP)—Serena Williams smashed one final serve, dropped her racket, clenched her hands together and raised her arms in triumph.

At long last, a champion again.

After blood clots in her lugs and two foot operations threatened her career for nearly a year, Williams captured her first tournament title since returning with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Marion Bartoli in the Bank of the West Classic final Sunday.

"Coming back and hearing the claps when I walk out there are moments that I truly missed," Williams said. "It's so awesome to be back and to be a part of those moments. Not everyone can be a sports, I don't know if `star' sounds full of myself, but I've worked hard for that title.

"So, yes, I say it and I take pride in it."

The 13-time major champion overcame two breaks in the first set to rally for a dominating finish. She went ahead 5-0 in the second and left no doubt.

The victory was even sweeter because the ninth-ranked Bartoli beat the former world No. 1 in straight sets in the fourth round at Wimbledon this year. The finals appearance was the first for Williams since winning at the All England Club in 2010 and her best showing this year.

Williams also became the first American woman to win on home soil since she won the 2008 U.S. Open. While she entered the tournament unseeded and ranked 169th, the victory will vault Williams into the top 80.

"I hated those triple digits," she said, chuckling. "Now I've got to get to single digits."

She's well on her way after this week.

Williams handled the competition with relative ease, including a 6-1, 6-3 thumping of Maria Sharapova in the quarterfinals. She capped it off with a vintage performance against a well-rested Bartoli, who advanced when Slovakia's Dominika Cibulkova withdrew in the other semifinal because of a strained abdominal muscle.

Bartoli was bothered by a bruise in the center of her right hand that began to swell in the middle of the opening set. She said the injury loosened her grip but didn't cost her the match.

Williams was too good for that.

"Serena, she already can improve from one day to the other," Bartoli said. "So you can imagine from one match to the other. I knew before the match started it was different than Wimbledon."

Sporting a long-sleeve green shirt and black skirt, Williams' conservative outfit—by her sister Venus' standards, anyway—was matched only by her strategy. She was calm and cool behind Bartoli's go-for-broke shots—including a second serve topping 100 mph—but a harder time with the elements.

Williams struggled serving into the sun on a crisp and clear day at Stanford, even hitting a few serves with a shortened toss and awkward delivery. She was broken in the third game of the match and went down 4-2.

Williams saved two break points and moved back to 4-4 with a break, pumping her fist in celebration. Bartoli broke back and served for the set at 5-4, first requesting a trainer to deal with the bruise.

After a long rally on set point for Williams, somebody in the crowd yelled "out" while Bartoli returned a ball near the baseline. The French woman kept playing before Williams unleashed a forehand winner for the set.

Bartoli argued unsuccessfully with the chair umpire to replay the point, and she requested a trainer between sets. In the end, she said, none of it mattered against her opponent.

"I'm sure she's going to tell you that she can play even better," Bartoli said. "And I'm sure that she will."

Such a small victory for Williams might never have meant so much.

After winning Wimbledon in July 2010, she was out for nearly a year recovering from various health scares. The worst were two foot operations and blood clots in her lungs that left her depressed and "on my deathbed," as she put it, much less wondering if she could ever play again.

Now Williams is not only back but ready to make more runs on the hard-court series this summer and at the U.S. Open beginning in late August. She said her stamina is back and her game is getting sharper by the day, a scary thought for opponents heading into Flushing Meadows.

Even if she's not ready to tab herself the favorite.

"I haven't thought about (the U.S. Open). Right now, I just put myself right at the bottom," Williams said. "I feel like I just want to start and go in. My confidence is better, which is what I was planning for. I don't even think like that. When I get there, I'm going to have the same chance as everybody else."

STANFORD, Calif. (AP)—Serena Williams, who needed nearly a year to recover from surgery, is putting her best foot forward again and playing like a champion.

Williams moved into the final of the Bank of the West Classic with an impressive 6-1, 6-2 victory over Germany's Sabine Lisicki on Saturday night.

It's her first appearance in a final since winning the title at Wimbledon last year and her first final on American soil since losing to Victoria Azarenka in Miami in March of 2009.

The unseeded and 169th-ranked Williams will meet third-seeded and ninth-ranked Marion Bartoli of France, who advanced when Slovakia's Dominika Cibulkova withdrew from the other semifinal because of a strained abdominal muscle.

Cibulkova said the injury has been bothering her all week.

"It was painful when I played Marina (Erakovic), but I was able to get through that match," she said. "I thought it would be better in the morning, but I saw a doctor and he recommended not playing since the injury could worsen."

Cibulkova had the same problem earlier in the year, missing two tournaments after getting through the quarterfinal at Madrid.

"Maybe I rushed to play too quick," she said. "I don't want to make the same mistake."

Cibulkova still plans to travel to San Diego, where she is scheduled to play Wednesday.

"It's still open and I'm hoping to be ready," she said. "I still have things to do in San Diego."

Cibulkova, playing in her 100th career WTA main draw, is projected to rise from No. 19 to No. 16 in the WTA rankings by reaching the semifinal. She beat qualifier Marina Erakovic 6-1, 6-1 in the quarterfinals.

"It was a great tournament for me," Cibulkova said. "I was looking forward to maybe winning my first tournament. I was so full of confidence."

The ninth-ranked Bartoli reached her fourth final of the year and her third final at Stanford. She won the title in 2009. Bartoli reached the semis when Japan's Ayumi Morita withdrew with an injury after the first set Friday night.

"This has never happened to me but there's not much I can do about it," Bartoli said. "It's a shame Dominika had to be put out. It will be an extremely tough match tomorrow and I need to get ready."

{blackbabes} Williams reaches semifinals at Stanford

STANFORD, Calif. (AP)—Serena Williams stumbled once, unable to plant her right foot. It was one of the few times she looked vulnerable Friday night.

The unseeded Williams put on a clinic with precision serving and a sharp ground game to get the better of second-seeded Maria Sharapova, 6-1, 6-3, in the quarterfinals of the Bank of the West Classic.

Playing in just her third tournament since winning Wimbledon last year, and her first on American soil since the 2009 U.S. Open, Williams looked as good as she did when she topped the rankings.

The fifth-ranked Sharapova had eight unforced errors before she hit her first winner and the slow start cost her in the battle of former No. 1s.

Williams, currently ranked No. 169, beat Sharapova for the sixth straight time and improved to 7-2 overall against her.

Sharapova last beat Williams at the 2004 WTA championships.

Germany's Sabine Lisicki knocked off her second straight seeded opponent, beating fifth-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland 7-6(4), 2-6, 6-2. She will meet Williams in the semifinals.

Lisicki was a semifinalist at Wimbledon and has improved her ranking to 26th after being No. 218 in March.

"I'm looking forward to the match," Lisicki said. "I love competing in the big matches. I have nothing to lose."

Sharapova beat Lisicki in the semis at Wimbledon.

"Coming from grass to hardcourt is always a challenge," Lisicki said. "It comes down to who plays the best that given day."

Last year, Lisicki missed five months with a left ankle injury. She says she has more endurance now than before her injury.

"I'm much better than I was before the injury," she said. "I've had to focus on so many aspects of my game. Last year I couldn't even walk. Now I feel I can rely on my serve when I need it at crucial moments."

Lisicki recorded 14 aces to Radwanska's seven.

The 14th-ranked Radwanska was a semifinalist at Stanford last year. She's still looking for her first tour title since 2008.

Third-seeded Marion Bartoli of France advanced when Japan's Ayumi Morita retired after dropping the first set 6-1. Bartoli will meet eighth-seeded Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia, who beat qualifier Marina Erakovic 6-1, 6-1.

The 20th-ranked Cibulkova, looking for her first tour title, reached her second semifinal of the year.

"I was pretty solid the whole match," Cibulkova said. "I hope to keep playing at this level."

{blackbabes} Jill Scott still in shock over No. 1 "Light of the Sun"

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Six weeks have passed since R&B singer Jill Scott hit No. 1 on album charts with "The Light of the Sun," and she still finds herself in shock.

That may sound odd from the Philadelphia native whose debut album, "Who is Jill Scott? Words and Sounds Vol. 1" was released 11 years ago. Since then, she has recorded more music and become a well-respected actress with roles in films such as "Hounddog" and "Why Did I Get Married," as well as starring in HBO television series "Ladies No. 1 Detective Agency."

But for "Light of the Sun," Scott took a new path in her singing career. She veered into hip hop, and the road that heretofore was less chosen, proved to be a good direction. Scott kicked off her 18-city Summer Block Party tour this week in Boston and stopped in New York on Thursday night.

"I (still) don't believe it...I have a copy (of the Billboard album chart), but I still don't believe it," Scott told Reuters about her success with "Light of the Sun."

"Somebody sent me a text message, 'Congratulations on the No. 1 album,' and I thought they were talking about the R&B chart. I was really happy about that. Then I found out it was the No.1 album in the country. It's overwhelming," said Scott.

"Light of the Sun" marks other significant milestones for Scott. The record was her first project since a split from Hidden Beach Recordings last year, and it is the inaugural project for her Blues Babe imprint in collaboration with Warner Bros. Records.

On the new album, the classic rap songs she listened to growing up and the current hits she keeps in rotation today heavily influenced Scott, she said, whose musical style has typically been a fusion of soul, jazz and R&B.

PERSONAL FAVORITES

One of her personal favorites on the new album, "All Cried Out Redux" features Doug E. Fresh, who was a pioneer in rap music and among Scott's early favorites in the genre.

"As a child of hip-hop, having recording anything with Doug E. Fresh is just surreal," said Scott.

Houston rapper Paul Wall, whom Scott calls one of the "nicest guys in hip-hop," joins her on "So Gone (What My Mind Says)" representing the voice of a mesmerizing, but less than chivalrous, lover she can't seem to shake.

How did the transformation to hip hop come about?

Last year, Scott was on a neosoul tour opening for singer Maxwell, singing the songs with which her fans were familiar, such as "Lyzel in E Flat" and "The Way." But Scott said her head, and heart, were in hip-hop.

"I started thinking about what kind of music I needed to hear before I went on stage. I think that was the catalyst. I need to hear Lupe Fiasco, Rick Ross and Mobb Deep," she said.

Hip-hop not only influenced the sound of this album but also Scott's recording style, approaching the music from the position of wanting to freestyle the beats, rhythms and lyrics.

"I went in and had fun. I didn't really write much. Some of the songs were recorded in one take. I freestyled pretty much the entire record," Scott said, echoing respected lyricists such as Jay-Z, who famously does not write down his lyrics.

"So Gone," for instance, was almost entirely improvised, Scott said.

In keeping with the old school theme of her album, Scott's Block Party tour is deejayed by acclaimed producer, master of turntables and fellow Philadelphian, DJ Jazzy Jeff.

The tour also reunites Scott with Doug E. Fresh. Vocalist Anthony Hamilton and R&B band Mint Condition open the show.

The tour next visits Detroit and has further stops in Chicago and Cleveland before ending on August 28 in Houston.

STANFORD, California (AP)—Serena Williams set up a quarterfinal meeting with Maria Sharapova while top-seeded defending champion Victoria Azarenka suffered a shock loss at the Bank of the West Classic on Thursday.

Williams beat Russian Maria Kirilenko 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 to set up an intriguing pre-U.S. Open clash of former world No. 1s.

"I'm sure we'll both go out and do the best each of us can," Williams said. "It's nothing personal. It's my job and I want to get paid. I leave it on the court."

Williams is playing her first tournament on U.S. soil since the 2009 U.S. Open. She missed nearly a year following right foot surgery. She also had blood clots in her lungs, and another surgery to remove a pool of blood under her skin.

She took a medical timeout during her match against Kirilenko to get her left ankle retaped after a blister formed, and the Russian took advantage by winning the second set and taking the first game of the third.

"I was a little sluggish out there," Williams said. "I got upset and started playing well enough to win. I started out fine but after that injury timeout I was sluggish."

Belarussian Azarenka was beaten 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 by New Zealand's Marina Erakovic, a 121st-ranked qualifier who recorded her first win over a top-20 opponent, stunning the Wimbledon semifinalist.

"Coming in I knew I had to be the aggressor and try to dictate the pace," Erakovic said. "I knew the court and I felt like I was hitting the ball well."

Her quarterfinal opponent will be Slovakian Dominika Cibulkova.

Japan's Ayumui Morita recovered to beat qualifier Urszula Radwanska of Poland 4-6, 7-5, 6-1 and will next face Marion Bartoli.

The 23-year-old Erakovic, born in Croatia, missed six months due to a hip injury in 2009 and returned via the ITF circuit, where she has won 12 singles titles.

"I went into a slump just before the injury and was beginning to question whether this tennis thing was for me," Erakovic said. "The injury made me realize how much I love tennis and that's when I committed myself. Coming back I feel like I can compete with the best."
