{blackbabes} After Injury, Jordin Sparks Misses Sunday and Monday Shows of 'In the Heights'

TimeLife.com

Jordin Sparks, the "American Idol" finalist who recently made her Broadway debut as Nina in In the Heights, injured her hip at the evening performance Aug. 28 at the Richard Rodgers Theatre.

The injury occurred in Act One, a spokesman said. Sparks finished the Saturday night show but missed both shows Sunday, Aug. 29. Understudy Courtney Reed went on. Playbill.com has learned that on a doctor's suggestion, Sparks will also sit out the Aug. 30 performance.

*

Sparks, the 2007 winner of TV's "American Idol," stepped into another American success story on Aug. 19 when she joined the Broadway cast of In the Heights, the Tony Award winner about the Latino neighborhood of Manhattan's Washington Heights.

Sparks is making her Broadway debut in the role of college student Nina Rosario, who returns home from Stanford University for the summer — with a secret that shakes the foundation of her family's American dream. Friends, family and a new love rally around her in the musical portrait of a changing neighborhood where multiple musical styles echo on the streets, spill from the windows and brew in the minds of its eclectic Latino characters.

Sparks will play a limited 12-week engagement through Nov. 14.

Creator and Tony-winning songwriter Lin-Manuel Miranda told Playbill.com, "Jordin is an undeniable talent and an incredibly versatile performer. When she came in to audition for the creative team, I knew she'd be able to sing the role of Nina (and does she ever). I was not prepared for how winning and honest an actress she'd be. I can't wait to see her tear it up with the rest of this amazing company."

{blackbabes} Odds stacked against Venus at US Open

NEW YORK (AFP) - Into her 30s, playing with a dodgy knee and sister-less, the odds would appear to be stacked up against Venus Williams at the US Open.

Her 6-4, 6-1 first round win over Roberta Vinci of Italy looked straightforward enough for the third seed, but it was just her first game since July when she crashed out of Wimbledon in the quarter-finals.

That defeat was followed by a sprain injury to her left kneecap that even cast doubt on her participation at Flushing Meadows, but Williams is trying to stay positive in the face of the adversity.

"I guess my only advantage would be that I'm hopefully mentally a lot fresher and physically hopefully a lot fresher than maybe my opponents who played all summer," she said.

"You know, I got to try to look at it in a positive way and bank on my experience.

"That helps a lot because I've had a lot of winning experience. And also that I'm generally a very confident kind of player, so that helps, too. Really just trying to take all the positives."

Particularly upsetting for Venus is the absence of sister Serena, who would have been the top seed were it not for a freak incident in a Munich restaurant shortly after winning Wimbledon where she trod on glass, badly cutting her feet.

The two have always been very close since they exploded onto the scene over a decade ago, having won 20 Grand Slam singles title between them as well as teaming up in a formidable doubles partnership.

It will be the first time that Venus has played a Grand Slam tournament without Serena being in the draw since Wimbledon 2006 when, as defending champion, she crashed out in the third round.

"I don't think it's the same for me or for tennis or for American tennis at all that she's not here," she said of her younger sister.

"Definitely affects the doubles draw, too. So it's not the same, but that's sport. Sometimes you deal with injury and you just come back stronger. So I know she will."

Asked if she would be playing women's doubles with someone else, Venus shot back: "I only play with Serena Williams."

Adding to the pressure on Williams' broad shoulders that she is the only American player listed among the 32 seeds and is the only realistic hope of fending off the European challenge for New York tennis fans.

Such a seeding setup would have been thought impossible just a few years ago when the Williams sisters, Lindsay Davenport and Jennifer Capriati were all contesting for Grand Slam titles.

But the next generation of US players has failed to step up to the mark and with Serena also closing in on her 30th birthday, there are genuine concerns for the future in the United States Tennis Association.

Venus, though, sees little to be concerned about.

"I think us American players who are playing, we feel like we do a really good job of holding up the flag," she said.

"We've been spoiled in American tennis since really the very beginning of tennis to have so many great champions, such a tradition.

"So, there's a little bit of a time where there aren't five or six Americans in the top 10, but at least there's one or two."

{blackbabes} Crash taught Halle Berry meaning of charity

Bare Necessities
If Halle Berry hadn't split her head open in a car accident in 1997, she might not have found her calling. When the actress isn't busy emoting, she works at the Jenesse Center, an LA charity that helps battered women and their children make a fresh start. At a lunch Sunday at the East Hampton house of Revlon mogul Ronald Perelman, Berry told guests she started to work at the center 13 years ago after she was sentenced to 250 hours of community service for leaving the scene of the accident -- even though she had amnesia and needed 17 stitches in her forehead. "It changed my life. I hadn't been doing enough. It was time," Berry told Council Speaker Christine Quinn, Rep. Carolyn Maloney, Tamara Mellon, Amanda Cutter, Dave Zinczenko and Ed Lewis. When Perelman announced Revlon will donate half the $500,000 the center needs for a new facility, Berry ran a lap around the tables and high-fived the crowd.

{blackbabes} Caught in the Act!

Subway Spike John Wayne WW2 Pacific Marine

Caught in the Act! | Neil Patrick Harris
Neil Patrick Harris celebrated his double Emmy win with a group dinner at XIV Restaurant in L.A. along with partner David Burtka and their friends. The giddy group ordered a special tasting menu from the chef and split four bottles of wine. "Neil kept ordering different wines for him and his friends to try," an onlooker says of the dads-to-be. "They were certainly in a good mood."

Twilight's Ashley Greene spent hours getting her hair colored at L.A.'s Sally Hershberger Salon. As she sat under the hairdryer, the actress read a script and texted a bit on her BlackBerry, occasionally chatting with her colorist. Before leaving, perfectly-coiffed Greene got her hair washed and blown out.

John Mayer had the help of a security guard to keep away unwanted advances from fans while hanging out at the Redwood Room at San Francisco's Clift Hotel. The rocker had fun with his entourage as he sipped one of the bar's signature cocktails: a blackberry margarita.

Kelly Osbourne and her friends were out at L.A. night spot Voyeur to celebrate 90210 star Evan Ross's 22nd birthday. The starlet greeted the birthday boy with a hug and kiss, and then started catching up with her old friend. The two were laughing and swapping stores, an onlooker says. Also there (separately): Ryan Phillippe, who enjoyed bottle service with his pals.

Will Smith and wife Jada Pinkett Smith, eating a light (but romantic) meal at Megu in N.Y.C. The couple shared a round booth on the main dining room floor, and split signature dishes, including crispy asparagus and Tatsuta chicken.

{blackbabes} Rihanna's High Fashion Wax Figure Revealed!

Subway Spike John Wayne WW2 Pacific Marine

She's one of the hottest acts in the world so it only makes sense that Rihanna is now immortalized in wax at Madame Tussauds. The stylish body double of the "Rude Boy" songstress was unveiled at the museum's Washington D.C. location this morning to much fanfare. Clad in a black lace corset, fitted jacket, pants and black silk heels, the sleek look-a-like figure was modeled after the outfit that Rihanna wore to French design house Balmain's show during Paris Fashion Week last October. In a nod to the singer's signature rocker-glam style, Madame Tussauds outfitted the chic figure with a large glittering pin, sparkling gold-and-diamond ring, giant diamond earrings and tennis bracelet. And while Rihanna was not on hand for the big reveal on Tuesday, a spokesperson for Madame Tussauds confirms to PEOPLE that the stylish star got a sneak peek of her figure last week "and absolutely loved it." Beginning today through September 30, fans who stop by Madame Tussauds Washington D.C. and mention the word "umbrella" will receive a buy-one-get-one-free admission! Check out madametussauds.com for more information.

{blackbabes} Nearly flawless

NEW YORK -- Venus Williams landed awkwardly on her recently injured leg after hitting a swinging volley and grimaced. It was about the only glitch during her return to tennis.

Playing for the first time in two months after spraining her left kneecap, seven-time Grand Slam champion Williams beat Roberta Vinci of Italy 6-4, 6-1 Monday night to reach the U.S. Open's second round.

"It was doing pretty good, till I landed on that leg on the swing volley. ... I was pretty happy to get through after not playing in forever," said Williams, whose younger sister Serena isn't playing in the U.S. Open after surgery for deep cuts on her right foot.

"It's not the same without two Williamses," the No. 3-seeded Venus added during an on-court interview. "I have big shoes to fill with just one Williams here."

She hit 10 aces, reaching 126 m.p.h., and became only the fifth woman with 200 career victories at major tournaments.

Vinci knew, of course, about Williams' recent time off, and said afterward with a sigh: "I hoped she would play worse."

Williams will face Canadian qualifier Rebecca Marino in the second round. The 19-year-old Vancouver native earned her first Grand Slam main draw victory by defeating Russian Ksenia Pervak 6-4, 4-6, 7-5.

"Obviously this is the biggest victory of my career," Marino said. "I can enjoy the win tonight but need to get ready for my second round tomorrow. I feel great about my game right now."

Other Canadians weren't so fortunate. Aleksandra Wozniak of Blainville, Que., lost 6-0, 6-1 to Australian qualifier Sally Peers. Fellow Canadian Milos Raonic of Thornhill, Ont., was also eliminated after a 6-7 (4), 6-3, 6-3, 6-2 loss to Carsten Ball of Australia.

Two of the American's Grand Slam titles came at Flushing Meadows, in 2000 and 2001, and other past U.S. Open champions Roger Federer, Andy Roddick and Kim Clijsters also won on Day 1. Federer hit a back-to-the-net, between-the-legs winner and smacked 18 aces while eliminating Argentina's Brian Dabul 6-1, 6-4, 6-2 at night.

Federer compiled a 46-4 advantage in winners, and none was more impressive than the trick shot that was nearly the same as one he hit against Novak Djokovic in the 2009 U.S. Open semifinals.

"This one was incredible again," Federer said. "I turned around and couldn't believe the shot landed in the corner."

He improved to 16-0 in night matches at Flushing Meadows and took the first step in his bid to reach a seventh consecutive U.S. Open final. But 32nd-seeded Lleyton Hewitt, who won the tournament in 2001, hit 12 double-faults and was upset by 109th-ranked Paul-Henri Mathieu of France 6-3, 6-4, 5-7, 4-6, 6-1.

"I wasn't expecting a whole heap coming into this tournament, based on my preparation," said Hewitt, who had played only four matches, losing three, since Wimbledon.

Monday's loss is Hewitt's only first-round exit in 11 trips to the U.S. Open. Williams, meanwhile, improved to 12-0 in opening matches in New York, and 48-3 in openers at all major tournaments.

She hadn't competed since being upset in the Wimbledon quarter-finals June 29 by then-No. 82 Tsvetana Pironkova of Bulgaria. Pironkova won Monday, too, and Williams could face her in the third round.

That loss at the All England Club, shortly after Williams turned 30, led to talk about how much longer she can contend for major championships -- and even how much longer she intends to play on tour. Yes, once you reach a certain age, birthdays tend to make you reflect on your own mortality. They also, in the case of professional athletes, tend to prompt questions about the state of your career.

Roddick turned 28 on Monday, and after beating Stephane Robert of France 6-3, 6-2, 6-2, the ninth-seeded American was asked what significance he attributes to his age. In typical Roddick fashion, he injected his reply with some humour.

"Obviously, I know I'm probably closer to the finish than I am to the start," he said. "But ... it's a number. I'm barely older than I was yesterday."

Well, that's true. He also, however, is seven years older than he was when he won his lone Grand Slam title at the 2003 U.S. Open. There's a reminder of that accomplishment every time Roddick returns to Flushing Meadows: His spot in the locker room bears a special plate with his name and the year he was the champion, a bit of recognition he referred to as "the little deal on your locker that says you're special."

Clijsters is "special," too. The Belgian won the U.S. Open each of the last two times she entered, in 2005 and 2009, and she stretched her winning streak in New York to 15 matches Monday despite a brief blip.

The No. 2-seeded Clijsters began her title defence with a 6-0, 7-5 victory over 104th-ranked Greta Arn of Hungary. It was an afternoon of mostly straightforward results, although two-time French Open runner-up Robin Soderling was stretched to five sets before edging 214th-ranked qualifier Andreas Haider-Maurer, who pounded 34 aces.

Other winners included No. 6 Nikolay Davydenko, No. 11 Marin Cilic, No. 13 Jurgen Melzer, No. 17 Gael Monfils and No. 22 Juan Carlos Ferrero, while No. 27 Fernando Gonzalez quit in the third set of his match against Ivan Dodig because of a knee injury.

Women moving into the second round included surprise 2009 U.S. Open quarterfinalist Melanie Oudin, French Open champion Francesca Schiavone, French Open runner-up Sam Stosur, two-time major finalist Elena Dementieva, No. 10 Victoria Azarenka, No. 13 Marion Bartoli, No. 16 Shahar Peer, and No. 24 Daniela Hantuchova, who beat former No. 1 and current No. 50 Dinara Safina 6-3, 6-4. Another past No. 1 now sitting way down in the rankings, No. 40 Ana Ivanovic, reached the second round by eliminating Ekaterina Makarova 6-3, 6-2.

Williams got off to a good start against Vinci, leading 3-0 and 4-1. But the Italian reeled off three consecutive games and 10 of 12 points to pull completely even at 4-all, 30-all.

That's when Williams took over, delivering an overhead smash on the next point, followed by her fifth ace, at 115 mph, to hold for a 5-4 lead. Williams then broke Vinci at love, giving her six points in a row to close the first set.

In the second set's opening game, Williams winced and briefly seemed uncomfortable when she planted her left foot on a winner near the net.

"Thankfully," Williams said, "after that, she did most of the running."

Williams did look absolutely fine a couple of games later when she went ahead 2-1 by smacking a down-the-line forehand passing winner on a full sprint.

"She kept pushing," Vinci said.

Williams came dressed for a night under the lights at the Open -- or anywhere in New York, for that matter.

Though it wasn't nearly as risque as her lace French Open outfit, Williams' sleek black dress had an exposed metal zipper up the back -- the height of chic these days -- and satin-looking side panels. There were two layers of fringe at the bottom of the skirt, and she topped off the look with two ropelike strands of necklace and a pair of dangling earrings.

Her sister Serena weighed in with an opinion, tweeting: "Dress is the best ever soooo pretty!!!!!"
