{blackbabes} Osaka and Townsend’s dinner for Black players at French Open caused ‘bit of a stir’ on social media

PARIS (AP) — Naomi Osaka and Taylor Townsend are piling up wins on the court at the French Open.

Their success comes after drawing attention off the court for organizing a dinner for Black players before the tournament started.

“It caused a bit of a stir, which I thought was pretty funny because for so long we have been the ones that (are) the minority in a sport where we kind of stick out,” Townsend said about chatter on social media. “And now coming together all of a sudden seems like a problem.”

While Townsend said the reaction from her Instagram post about the evening was “mostly positive,” she said there was also online criticism.

Several comments on Osaka’s and Townsend’s posts suggested the dinner as “segregation,” while another asked, “When are the white, Latino, and Asian parties?”

It all prompted Townsend to quote a lyric from the rapper Finesse2tymes: “He said, ‘It’s cool when they do it; it’s a problem when I do it.’”

Keeping in the rap theme, Townsend quoted Tupac Shakur in her post about the evening: “Some say the blacker the berry, the sweeter the juice; I say the darker the flesh, then the deeper the roots.”

Besides Osaka and Townsend, the other attendees of the dinner were 2025 French Open champion Coco Gauff, retiring Frenchman Gael Monfils, doubles specialist Asia Muhammad and retired player turned TV commentator Chris Eubanks.

“Growing up, there weren’t a lot of tennis players I could look up to that looked like me,” Osaka — whose father is from Haiti and mother is from Japan — said in her Instagram post about the dinner. “Being a minority in a sport like tennis is very isolating but the positive is that you keep tabs on everyone that … being blunt, is black. There’s a fellowship, a camaraderie.”

“I felt like everyone in that room was a part of my family,” Osaka — who represents Japan but grew up mostly in the U.S. — added in a news conference.

For Townsend, “it wasn’t just about the culture, it was healing for us to all be able to speak about our journeys.”

While Gauff’s title defense ended with a loss to Anastasia Potapova on Saturday, Osaka has reached the fourth round in Paris for the first time in her career while showing off her taste for fashion with her elaborate walk-on outfits. American player Townsend and Czech partner Katerina Siniakova — the top-seeded doubles team — have won their opening three matches and are into the quarterfinals.

Althea Gibson broke tennis’ color barrier

Gauff beat Townsend in the opening round of singles, after which a ceremony was held on Court Philippe-Chatrier to honor the 70th anniversary of Althea Gibson’s 1956 French Open victory — the first Grand Slam title for a Black tennis player.

Gibson was also the first Black player to compete at a major tennis tournament when she fought with the U.S. Lawn Tennis Association just to get admitted in 1950 to what was then called the U.S. Nationals — now the U.S. Open.

“Taylor and I playing on Philippe-Chatrier is a direct product of Althea Gibson,” Gauff told the crowd after beating Townsend. “It just shows the importance of breaking barriers in all aspects of the world, but especially in sport. I’m very grateful for people like her and Serena and Venus (Williams), Zina Garrison for paving the way for us.”

‘Soul Food’ Sunday at Wimbledon

The dinner recalls how going back to the Harlem Renaissance, Black athletes, entertainers, musicians and writers held salons and dinners to celebrate their successes in a familial space. Such events were not meant as a slight to non-Blacks.

Katrina Adams, a former pro and then the first Black president of the U.S. Tennis Association, said she was pleased to see “an old tradition” re-emerging.

“In our era in the 80’s/90’s, we hosted ‘Soul Food’ Sunday on the middle Sunday of Wimbledon, when there was no play,” Adams said in a comment on Townsend’s post. “All the black players, got together, cooked, ate and enjoyed each other.”

Adams said players like Garrison and Lori McNeil hosted the Wimbledon gatherings for years and that she passed on the tradition to the likes of Chanda Rubin, the Williams sisters, MaliVai Washington and Roger Smith.

Townsend’s unexpected vacation with Osaka

Townsend and Osaka hardly knew each other before Osaka surprised Townsend by inviting her on a vacation last year to the Turks and Caicos.

Townsend is an extrovert and Osaka a very quiet introvert.

“I didn’t know why she invited me,” Townsend said. “(But) it ended up being the best time and Naomi and I floated in the ocean on a surfboard for three hours and talked to each other. … We’ve been friends ever since.”

Both players are mothers.

“We share a lot of the same values and principles and morals of how we go about life and how we want to treat people and what type of mothers that we want to be for our children,” Townsend said. “It goes way beyond tennis.”

{blackbabes} Angela Bassett's First Major Role Was On This Long-Running Soap Opera

Angela Bassett attends the opening night of "Othello" at the Barrymore Theatre on March 23, 2025

https://www.tvline.com/2182196/angela-bassett-first-role-forgotten-soap-opera-search-for-tomorrow/

"9-1-1" star Angela Bassett is no stranger to playing medical professionals on TV. Fans remember her as the sharp-tongued Catherine Banfield in the final season of "ER," but if you rewind all the way back to her beginnings, Bassett's first recurring role was a nurse on a popular soap opera.

Bassett's breakthrough moment came in 1985 when she landed the role of Selina McCulla on the long-running "Search for Tomorrow." The iconic daytime drama enjoyed a 35-year run, airing from 1951 to 1986. For decades, fans tuned in to follow the endless dramatic trials and tribulations of Jo Gardner (Mary Stuart) and her family in the fictional town of Henderson. Bassett entered this established daytime world in the mid-'80s, checking in for an eight-episode stint.

Selina was a dedicated nurse who ran the Riverfront Clinic. Her storylines involved managing her brother Cruiser (Joseph C. Phillips), training a young volunteer named T.R. (played by a pre-"30 Rock" Jane Krakowski), and keeping a sharp eye on a stubborn patient nicknamed Sailor.

Bassett called her Search for Tomorrow gig a 'training ground'

Angela Bassett as Selina in "Search for Tomorrow"

Though the role was brief, it served as a crucial stepping stone for the future Oscar nominee. While talking to the Sydney Morning Herald, Bassett reflected on the intense hustle before booking the gig. "I don't think I had any idea how far it would take me, but I was doing pretty good," she shared, recalling the stress of working at a salon and trying to rush to auditions during 45-minute lunch breaks.

"Searching for Tomorrow" also proved to be an invaluable masterclass in screen acting. Bassett opened up to The Tampa Tribune about how hard she was on herself during those early performances, admitting, "I'd tape it, look at it, analyze it and hate it." However, she recognized the ultimate value of the experience, adding, "It was a training ground. You don't get that in school. They were paying me to learn."

During an interview with Jimmy Fallon (via YouTube), the late-night host got Bassett to watch an old clip from "Search for Tomorrow," a role she says she took "right out of drama school." The actress, whose jaw dropped as the clip played, laughed at her own performance. "My voice is so high!" she exclaimed, poking fun at her sassy line delivery.

After leaving daytime TV, Bassett went on to build a decades-long career in film and television, delivering powerhouse performances in "What's Love Got to Do with It" and "American Horror Story," which she'll soon return to for Season 13.

Thirty-nine years to the day that the original A Different World premiered in 1987, its Netflix sequel series of the same name will also premiere in 2026: September 24. The single-camera comedy will have 10 half-hour episodes.

The streamer released key art and a video teaser for the show featuring star Maleah Joi Moon, who plays Deborah Wayne, the daughter of Hillman College royalty, Whitley Gilbert (Jasmine Guy) and Dwayne Wayne (Kadeem Hardison). What makes the assets extra special is that the youngest Wayne is wearing a pair of flip-up glasses, just like her daddy made famous in the OG series.

You can see the key art in full below and the video clip above.

Moon is currently in Miami alongside showrunner/executive producer Felicia Pride and executive producer/director Debbie Allen as part of the Black Television at the American Black Film Festival, where they are publicly speaking about the series for the first time.

A Different World returns to Hillman College with a new class stepping onto campus — and beloved faces coming home. At the center is Deborah Wayne (Moon), Whitley and Dwayne’s lovingly sheltered youngest daughter, a free spirit with a flair for the spotlight and a big heart who’s still figuring out her own path at Hillman.

Along the way, she’s joined by a new generation that reflects the breadth of Black life on campus: Rashida Duvall (Alijah Kai), a first‑gen criminal justice major; Shaquille Johnson (Cornell Young IV), a five‑star athlete choosing legacy; Amir Rodale (Jordan Aaron Hall), a sharp psych major better at fixing everyone else’s problems than facing his own; Hazel Henry (Kennedi Reece), a church‑raised small‑town girl defining her own values; and Kojo Achebe (Chibuikem Uche), a Ghanaian‑Nigerian fashion entrepreneur finding the courage to follow his vision.

There’s also a slew of original series actors returning to reprise their roles, including Guy, Hardison, Cree Summer, and Darryl M. Bell.

The new key art can be found below.

{blackbabes} BTS Wins Artist of the Year at American Music Awards, as Katseye, Sombr, ‘Golden’ Also Score Top Honors: Complete Winners List

Lucky Strike AMF

A hiatus was no damper on fan love for BTS: The group won Artist of the Year prize at the American Music Awards Monday night, scoring that fan-voted honor for a second time, and for the first time since going on a hiatus for military service. They previously picked it up in 2021.

Katseye draws some of that same level of fan hysteria, so it was little surprise to see that group winning New Artist of the Year, although the competition for that trophy was particularly fierce, with newly minted stars Sombr, Olivia Dean, Ella Langley, Leon Thomas and Alex Warren also in the mix.

Despite missing out in the new artist category, Sombr did not go home empty-handed, following his performance on the show with trips to the podium to pick up awards for Best Rock/Alternative Song, for “Back to Friends,” and Best Rock/Alternative Album, for “I Barely Know Her.”

The fervor for “KPop Demon Hunters” did not go unrewarded, as “Golden” and its singers EJAE, Audrey Nuna and Rei Ami picked up Song of the Year.

The AMAs only gave out awards on the CBS/Paramount+ telecast to winners who were in the house to come up and receive their trophies. The BBC has landed some star power for its drama series about what happens when a celebrity legal battle spirals out of control.

Naomie Harris and Christina Hendricks are onboard Reputation. Harris is Lena, a formidable lawyer who gets pulled into the celebrity case of the decade representing global pop star Davina Knight (Hendricks). Knight has released a provocative new song accusing her ex-husband, Billy, of abusive behaviour and he retaliates in kind, with their private breakdown erupting into a very public libel battle. PR machines are deployed, laws are bent and social media platforms become judge, jury and battleground.

The pair are joined in Reputation by an ensemble cast including Alex Jennings (The Crown, The Lady In The Van), David Gyasi (The Diplomat, Interstellar), Emily Atack (Rivals, Inbetweeners), Kyle Soller (Andor, Bodies), Marli Siu (Twenty Twenty Six, Everything I Know About Love), Alex Heath (Serpent Queen, Prime Target), Tilly Keeper (You, Queenie), Corey Johnson (Digger, The Day of the Jackal), Aidan McArdle (Sherlock & Daughter, Showtrial), Ernest Kingsley Jnr (Washington Black, The Sandman), Jodie Campbell (Boarders, Bitch Boxer), Kayla Meikle (Transaction, Time 2), Mike Noble (This City is Ours, Dirty Business), Enzo Cilenti (Black Mirror, Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell) and Kat Ronney (Dinosaur, Finding Emily).

The series from Becoming Elizabeth creator Anya Reiss and The Buccaneers producer The Forge brings to mind some headline-grabbing news stories of recent months including the very public Lively-Baldoni spat and Lily Allen’s album trashing ex-husband David Harbour.

Reputation (6×60) was commissioned by Lindsay Salt, Director of BBC Drama. Alex Kazamia (Generation Z) will produce and BAFTA and RTS award winner Mahalia Belo (The End We Start From, The Long Song) will direct. Executive producers are George Ormond, Jade Taylor (Just Act Normal), Reiss and Belo. Alongside Reiss, other writers on the series are Shyam Popat and Karla Crome. Reputation will be distributed internationally by Banijay Rights.

{blackbabes} Quinta Brunson to Develop and Star in ‘Betty Boop’ Feature Film From Fleischer Studios and Fifth Chance Productions

Quinta Brunson - Betty Boop

Quinta Brunson is stepping into the world’s most famous flapper.

The “Abbott Elementary” creator and Emmy winner will develop and star as Betty Boop in a feature film adaptation of the nearly century-old animated icon, Variety has learned exclusively. Brunson’s company, Fifth Chance Productions, has partnered with Mark Fleischer, grandson of Betty Boop creator Max Fleischer, and Fleischer Studios on the project, which is currently in development and overseen by Fifth Chance’s head of creative affairs, Erin Wehrenberg.

The film will trace the origin and evolution of Betty Boop through the perspective of her creator, Max Fleischer, examining the relationship between the artist and his creation as he navigates the creative and commercial pressures of building one of the world’s first animated icons, particularly as that icon begins to take on a life of its own.

It marks Betty Boop’s first theatrical motion picture appearance in a starring role since the 1930s, when she emerged from Fleischer Studios’ groundbreaking “Talkartoons” series to become the first and only animated independent female movie superstar of her era.

“Betty Boop is one of our nation’s most beloved cartoon characters, yet somehow still remains pleasantly niche,” Brunson wrote in a statement. “She has had a quiet but undeniable impact on culture for nearly a century. After Erin and I met with Mark and learned more about his grandfather’s creation of Betty, I realized there was a much deeper story to tell. One that could be explored in a way that feels refreshing, subversive, and timeless, much like Betty herself.”

Added Mark Fleischer: “When Quinta first approached me with the unique concept of a movie about the relationship of my grandfather, Max Fleischer, and his creation, Betty Boop, I was breathtaken. Quinta so embodies Betty’s love of life, intelligence, humor, sassiness and compassion that the relationship between her as Betty and Max burst into life at its mere mention.”

Like Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie did with the blockbuster “Barbie,” Brunson, who has built “Abbott Elementary” into network television’s defining comedy of the decade, could follow a similar template: a formidable female creator-star reimagining a nearly century-old female character through a contemporary lens.

Created by Max Fleischer in 1930, Betty Boop appeared in more than 100 cartoons during her original run, evolving from a poodle-like nightclub singer into the fully human Jazz Age icon recognized around the world today. She was the first cartoon character profiled by A&E’s “Biography” and most recently anchored the Broadway musical “BOOP!”

Her global licensing footprint spans fashion, beauty, collectibles and contemporary brand collaborations, positioning her among the most successful licensed classic characters in entertainment history.

For Brunson, the project lands as she continues her run on ABC’s hit mockumentary “Abbott Elementary,” the network comedy that made her the first solo Black woman to win the Emmy for outstanding writing for a comedy series and the first to earn three Emmy nominations in a single year for writing, acting and producing in the comedy category. She later won the Emmy for outstanding lead comedy actress for Season 2, becoming the first Black woman to earn that honor since 1981.

Mark Fleischer serves as chairman and CEO of Fleischer Studios. The company’s exclusive worldwide licensing agency, Global Icons, continues to expand the Betty Boop brand across international markets.

Fifth Chance Productions, Brunson’s female-led banner, develops character-driven television and film with a focus on diverse voices and universal storytelling.
