{blackbabes} Serena serves ace for black women's equal pay

New York (AFP) - Serena Williams served up a rallying cry for equal pay for black women Monday, decrying that they would have to work on average eight months longer to earn the same as male counterparts in one year.

The record-breaking tennis star and world's highest paid female athlete -- who has spoken candidly about sexism and racism -- wrote a nearly 1,000-word essay in Fortune magazine to mark Black Women's Equal Pay Day.

For every dollar made by a man, black women make 63 cents in the United States. Black women earn 17 percent less than white women, and black women with graduate degrees get paid less at every level, wrote Williams.

http://app4-cdn2.sbx-cdn.com/content/pages/promote-and-earn/swagbucks-share-1540-20170501.jpg

The 23-time Grand Slam singles champion quoted data showing that only 44 percent of white men recognize the pay gap as an issue.

"I have been treated unfairly, I've been disrespected by my male colleagues and -- in the most painful times -- I've been the subject of racist remarks on and off the tennis court," wrote the 35-year-old.

"The cycles of poverty, discrimination, and sexism are much, much harder to break than the record for Grand Slam titles," she added, calling for legislation and action to change the status quo.

Williams, who announced her engagement to Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian last December, is pregnant with her first child. She plans to return to competitive tennis next year.

"Black women: Be fearless. Speak out for equal pay. Every time you do, you're making it a little easier for a woman behind you," she said.

"Most of all, know that you're worth it. It can take a long time to realize that. It took me a long time to realize it. But we are all worth it. I've long said, 'You have to believe in yourself when no one else does.'"

Forbes ranks Williams as the highest earning female athlete with a pay check of $27 million -- but only 51st on an overall list of highest paid athletes. Forbes ranks Roger Federer as the world's highest paid tennis star at $64 million.

"Black women are the cornerstone of our communities, they are phenomenal, and they deserve equal pay," Williams tweeted Monday with a picture of herself wearing a T-shirt saying "Phenomenal Woman."

CBS announced today that Nia Long has joined the cast of NCIS: LOS ANGELES as a series regular. She will be introduced in the ninth season premiere on Sunday, Oct. 1 (9:30-10:30 PM, ET/PT).

Long will play the team's new executive assistant director, Shay Mosely. As a former Secret Service agent now working for the Naval Criminal Investigative Service, Mosely is an experienced Washington insider who brings an east coast style and demeanor to the west coast team.

"The character was created specifically for Nia to capitalize on her strengths and personality, and we are excited about the new opportunities and dynamics she brings to the show," said NCIS: LOS ANGELES executive producer R. Scott Gemmill. "We couldn't be happier to have her join our family."

Since making her feature film debut in "Boyz N the Hood," actress Nia Long has gone on to star in more than 50 movies and television shows. Some of her notable film credits include "Friday," "Soul Food," "Love Jones," "The Best Man," "Boiler Room," "Big Momma's House," "Alfie," "Are We There Yet?," "Big Momma's House 2," "The Best Man Holiday" and "Keanu." This month, she is traveling to Tanzania for the campaign, to visit the world's largest refugee camp where she will meet with refugee families and distribute insecticide-treated mosquito nets that help keep families safe from the disease.

{blackbabes} Keke Palmer slams Kylie Jenner’s transformation

https://nyppagesix.files.wordpress.com/2017/07/kylie-keke.jpg?quality=90&strip=all&w=915

"Scream Queens" starlet Keke Palmer thinks Kylie Jenner is a victim of society's idea of perfection.

The 23-year-old called out the beauty mogul during an interview with Yahoo Beauty, claiming Jenner, 19, caved to societal pressures heavily influenced by social media.

"So often people feel like, you know what, I'm going to beat them to the punch and either degrade myself or be so damn perfect they have nothing to say," Palmer explained. "We've seen extremes of that."

Referencing the Kardashians, Palmer then specifies Jenner's dramatic transformation.

"Specifically in the situation with Kylie, where you've had a young girl people have seen on television since she was a kid and they literally told her she was so ugly … the ugly person in the family. She went and did apparently everything the world deems as beautiful. The even crazier part is that everybody loves her for it," Palmer said.

Jenner revealed mom Kris, 61, allowed her to get lip fillers at the age of 17.

http://app3-cdn2.sbx-cdn.com/content/pages/promote-and-earn/swagbucks-share-1420-v2.png

"My mom was super against it, but I begged her and begged her and she finally let me do it," Jenner told Elle Canada in 2015.

Palmer also noted the idea of millennials profiting off a disingenuous image has become regularity within recent years.

"What I find interesting is that this is something that is being displayed to my generation — showing young girls, young guys that if you do everything that society wants you to be, not only will you be praised for it but you will make money for it. You can be profitable for not being who you truly are," Palmer disclosed.

Despite pressures from the outside world, Palmer is confident in her own skin.

"There's nothing more important in life than being true to ourselves and being 100 percent loving to ourselves," she explained. "Putting our feelings [first] how we wanna feel and do that above what anybody thinks no matter how impossible, selfish, weird, scary. or embarrassing that may seem.

"When I realized that, I realized that's what it means to be confident. Confidence is me making choices that empower me."

{blackbabes} ‘Faith Under Fire’: Toni Braxton To Topline Lifetime Movie About Georgia Elementary School Gunman

Lifetime has given the green light to original movie Faith Under Fire, based on the book Prepared for a Purpose: An Inspiring True Story of Faith, Courage and Compassion in Crisis by Tuff and Alex Tresniowski. Toni Braxton (Toni Braxton: Unbreak My Heart) is attached to star and executive produce the film for a 2018 premiere.

Braxton plays Antoinette Tuff, the struggling single mom from Georgia who heroically averted a tragedy, saving hundreds of lives when she convinced a deranged gunman who stormed a Decatur, GA, elementary school in 2013 to surrender.

Shortly after arriving to work at the Ronald E. McNair Discovery Learning Academy, Antoinette, the school's bookkeeper, was in the front office when Michael Hill (played by Trevor Morgan), a young man with a history of mental illness, snuck in, armed with an AK-47 and hundreds of rounds of ammunition. As the school went into lockdown, Antoinette was left alone with Trevor, who repeatedly threatened to kill everyone. Showing enormous courage and empathy, along with nerves of steel, Antoinette convinced Trevor to surrender by using her own life struggles to connect with him. Yaya DaCosta (Whitney) portrays Kendra McCray, the 911 operator relaying messages from Antoinette to police on the scene.

Faith Under Fire is produced by Sony Pictures Television. T.D. Jakes (Heaven Is for Real), Judith Verno (Masters of Sex), Derrick Williams (Miracles from Heaven), Toni Braxton and Craig Baumgarten (Toni Braxton: Unbreak My Heart) executive produce. Emmy nominee Vondie Curtis Hall (Abducted: The Carlina White Story) directs from a script written by Laura Harrington and Stephen Kay.

Faith Under Fire marks a return to Lifetime for Braxton, whose biopic Toni Braxton: Unbreak My Heart drew record ratings for the network, making it ad-supported cable's top-rated movie in key demos since the January 2015 premiere of Lifetime original Whitney.

{blackbabes} Venus Williams Blames Seat Belts, Car Problems In Fatal Crash

Venus Williams says at least one of the victims in the Florida crash that left one man dead was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident ... this according to new court docs obtained by TMZ.

The tennis star is firing back at the estate of Jerome Barson -- which is suing Williams for wrongful death, claiming she was responsible for the T-bone accident that killed the 78-year-old and seriously injured his wife.

In new court docs, Williams doesn't point out which person wasn't belted in -- but says the injuries could have been reduced had they both been buckled up.

As for the injuries, Williams also says in the docs Jerome's wife's injuries were NOT bad enough to recover damages in a lawsuit under FL law. It's puzzling since Linda Barson claims she suffered a cracked sternum, a shattered right arm and a broken wrist, hand and fingers.

Williams also alleges the Barsons failed to adequately maintain and repair the vehicle in a safe condition -- suggesting they could have avoided the crash with a properly functioning car.

There's more ... Williams points out that "third parties" -- presumably the other cars besides her and the Barsons -- contributed to the hectic scene at the intersection that led to the crash. Williams says those drivers should be held responsible as well.

Video of the crash shows Venus was trying to drive through an intersection when another car turned in front of her, causing her to stop before clearing the intersection. The Barsons T-boned Venus claiming they had the right of way and couldn't avoid her car, which was stopped in an area where it shouldn't have been.

The documents were first obtained by the DailyMail.

{blackbabes} Jada Pinkett Smith reveals her drug-dealing past

Jada Pinkett Smith revealed that she was dealing drugs when she met close friend Tupac Shakur for the first time.

The "Girls Trip" actress opened up on SiriusXM's "Sway in The Morning" about her relationship with the late rapper, saying, "It's kind of hard because I haven't really told the whole story. One of the things that's very interesting that I've never really said before is that when I first met Pac, I was a drug dealer."

"That's how we started," she said on Wednesday, "Then as I was coming out, something very bad happened to me. As I was coming out of the life, he was coming more into the life."

Tupac was gunned down in 1996, the year before Pinkett Smith tied the knot with current husband Will Smith. The nature of Pinkett Smith and Tupac's relationship has long been a subject of scrutiny.

"Pac and I's relationship was about survival," she said. "That's how it started. I know that most people want to always connect it in this romance thing and that's just because they don't have the story. It was based in survival, how we held each other down and when you have somebody that has your back when you feel like you're nothing, that's everything. There's a lot of components to our story that we've never shared for a very specific reason. I just decided that this one little piece was important to share finally because it gives more insight to who we were. It was about survival and it's always been about survival between us."

Last month, the actress posted on social media that she was upset about the way the new biopic on Tupac, "All Eyez On Me," portrayed their relationship.

"The reimagining of my relationship to Pac has been deeply hurtful," she wrote.

{blackbabes} Michelle Hurd Joins ‘Lethal Weapon’ As Recurring, Departs ‘Blindspot’ As Regular

Blindspot co-star Michelle Hurd is set to recur opposite Damon Wayans in the upcoming second season of Fox's action comedy-drama Lethal Weapon. Hurd, who joined Blindspot as a new series regular in Season 2, will not be a regular in the upcoming third season of the NBC drama but may recur. Both Lethal Weapon and Blindspot hail from the same studio, Warner Bros. TV.

On Lethal Weapon, Hurd will play Gina Santos, who is brought in as Chief, above Avery (Kevin Rahm), to take some control of the division. She has a past with Murtaugh (Wayans), and he is somewhat paralyzed by her arrival and the sexual tension between them, though it may be just in his head.

Lethal Weapon, from Matt Miller, Warner Bros TV and Lin Pictures, is a reimagining of the movies that follows cop duo Riggs (Clayne Crawford) and Murtaugh (Wayans), who work a crime-ridden beat in modern-day Los Angeles.

Hurd recently wrapped production on comedy feature You Can Choose Your Family alongside Jim Gaffigan. On TV, in addition to her role as Shepherd on Blindspot, Hurd was also recently seen Ash Vs. Evil Dead and Daredevil. She's repped by APA and TMT Entertainment.

Lethal Weapon Season 2 premieres Tuesday, September 26 on Fox.

We learned today that Kingsman: The Golden Circle is coming to Comic-Con, and now we know that the stars of the Secret Service sequel plan on spending some time with Conan O'Brien on July 20.

SDCC vet Halle Berry along with Channing Tatum, Jeff Bridges, Pedro Pascal, Taron Egerton and Colin Firth are set to appear on the TBS host's show on Thursday, I've learned. The Conan sit-down is set to happen just hours after the cast, screenwriter Jane Goldman and Kingsman co-creator and Watchmen legend Dave Gibbons are onstage at 11 AM in the huge Hall H.

With that July 20 spot left tantalizingly blank, Conan already had laid out a SDCC guest list of Game of Thrones cast members, Will Smith, Joel Edgerton, Noomi Rapace, Edgar Ramirez and Lucy Fry of Netflix's Bright movie and Dave Franco, Olivia Munn, Justin Theroux, Zach Woods, Michael Pena, Kumail Nanjiani and Abbi Jacobson of The Lego Ninjago Movie.

Returning to confab for the third year in a row, O'Brien again will be taping his shows Thursday through Sunday, again at San Diego's Spreckels Theatre. The episodes to air at 11 PM on TBS.

Comic-Con 2017 runs from July 20 -23, with the traditional preview night taking place on July 19.

{blackbabes} I'll be back, vows Venus after Wimbledon heartache

US player Venus Williams reacts against Spain's Garbine Muguruza during their women's singles final match on the twelfth day of the 2017 Wimbledon Championships at The All England Lawn Tennis Club in Wimbledon, southwest London, on July 15, 2017

London (AFP) - Venus Williams vowed to make amends for her Wimbledon final heartache by ending a bittersweet year on a high at the US Open.

Williams failed in her bid to become the oldest Grand Slam champion in the Open era as the American star was crushed 7-5, 6-0 by Garbine Muguruza in Saturday's title match.

Instead of celebrating her sixth Wimbledon title, and first major trophy since 2008, the 37-year-old trudged off Centre Court looking her age for virtually the first time in her unexpected 2017 renaissance.

Venus, beaten by sister Serena in the Australian Open final in January, has reached the two Grand Slams finals in the same year for the first time since 2003.

Given her battle with the autoimmune disease that leaves her fatigued and once threatened to end her career, Venus's return to prominence is a tribute to her ferocious will to win.

With Serena set to miss the rest of the year as she prepares to have her first child, Venus will still be among the favourites to win her eighth Grand Slam title when the US Open gets underway in late August.

"I'm in good form. I've been in a position a lot of times this year to contend for big titles," Venus said.

"That's the kind of position I want to keep putting myself in. It's just about getting over the line. I believe I can do that.

"This is where you want to be. I like to win. I don't want to just get to a final. It's just about playing a little better.

"I've had a great two weeks. I'm looking forward to the rest of the summer."

- Low note -

Batting away questions that invited her to blame the 24-minute second set meltdown on tiredness caused by her illness, Venus admitted she could have no complaints about the result.

Her only regret was a failure to take the break points that came her way in a fiercely fought first set.

"Definitely would have loved to have converted some of those points. But she competed really well. So credit to her. She played amazing," Venus said.

"There's always something to learn from matches that you win and the ones that you don't win. So there's definitely something for me to learn from this.

"I went for some big shots and they didn't land. Probably have to make less errors."

Umpire Eva Asderaki-Moore had inspected the barren, grassless baseline at Venus's request before play got underway on Centre Court, but the American wouldn't criticise the state of a surface that has come under fire from stars including Novak Djokovic.

"They said the court was ready to go, so we started play," she said.

Twenty years after making her Wimbledon debut, Venus isn't keen to bow out on such a frustrating low note.

Asked if she would return next year, she said: "Presumably, yes.

"It took a lot of effort to get right here today. So this is where I want to be every single major.

"What else can I say? It was a great experience."

NEW YORK (AP) -- Venus Williams, Maria Sharapova and John Isner will headline World TeamTennis, which begins its 42nd season on Sunday.

Williams, who finished runner-up at Wimbledon on Saturday, will play her sixth season for the Washington Kastles. She'll travel to Philadelphia to face the Freedoms on July 24 and be home for the Springfield (Missouri) Lasers on July 25.

The six-team coed league also features Wimbledon semifinalist Sam Querrey and Australian Nick Kyrgios on the Kastles.

{blackbabes} Venus Williams falls short of sixth Wimbledon title at age 37

LONDON — Through it all, Venus Williams kept working, kept striving, kept eyeing yet another Wimbledon championship.

Through it all, through the difficult days of adjusting to life with an energy-sapping autoimmune disease, through the disappointing days of first-round losses that led to questions about retirement, through all of the accumulating years, she pressed on. And on Saturday, facing Garbine Muguruza in the final, Williams had a shot at her sixth title at the All England Club — nine years after her last one and, remarkably, 17 years after her first.

Williams twice was a point from taking the opening set before unraveling completely, dropping the last nine games and losing 7-5, 6-0 to Muguruza, who earned her first Wimbledon championship.

"This is where you want to be. I like to win. I don't want to just get to a final," said Williams, at 37 the oldest woman to play in a title match at the grass-court major since 1994. "It's just about playing a little better."

She appeared ready to take control Saturday, ahead 5-4 in the first set and with Muguruza serving at 15-40. But Williams netted a forehand to close a 20-stroke exchange on the first set point. And on the second, she sent a return long. Muguruza would go on to win that game — and the next eight, too, to earn her third Grand Slam trophy.

Williams owns seven of them — five at Wimbledon in 2000-01, 2005, 2007 and 2008; two at the U.S. Open in 2000-01.

But her coach, David Witt, offered one explanation for the way everything came undone for Williams against Muguruza.

"It was just nerves," Witt said.

"She never, I thought, looked like she was relaxed out there," he added.

{blackbabes} Venus Williams' Phone Records Subpoenaed in Fatal Car Accident Lawsuit

Venus Williams' phone records could be crucial in the wrongful death lawsuit filed against her ... or attorneys for the man who died in the accident think so, anyway.

According to docs, attorneys for Jerome Barson's estate have filed a request for documents from the tennis star. They want all bills for the month of the accident for any smartphones and devices Venus owns.

Sources connected to the case tell us Barson's team wants to make sure Venus was not talking, texting or using her phone in any way in the moments leading up to the June 9 accident win Palm Beach Gardens, FL.

In the surveillance video ... you can see Venus' left elbow resting on the door through an open window -- we've slowed it down, but it's still not clear if she's holding a phone.

The estate's attorney, Michael Steinger, is also requesting prescriptions for any medications Venus may have taken within 72 hours of the accident.

Police have already said drugs and alcohol did not play a role in the accident. They also say she was not distracted by her phone.
