{blackbabes} ‘Dollface’: Brenda Song & Lex Scott Davis Join Kat Dennings In Hulu Comedy Series

Pure Genius alumna Brenda Song and Lex Scott Davis (Superfly) are set for lead roles opposite Kat Dennings in Dollface, Hulu's 10-episode comedy series starring and executive produced by Dennings. The project hails from writer Jordan Weiss (Harley Quinn), ABC Signature Studios as well as producers Margot Robbie and Brett Hedblom from LuckyChap Entertainment and Bryan Unkeless and Scott Morgan from Clubhouse Pictures who produced together I, Tonya. Production is slated to begin this year.

Written by Weiss, Dollface follows a young woman (Dennings) who – after being dumped by her longtime boyfriend – must deal with her own imagination in order to literally and metaphorically re-enter the world of women, and rekindle the female friendships she left behind.

Song will play Madison Maxwell, Jules' (Dennings) former best friend. She's confident, assertive, and distinctly feminine. Madison works in PR, think Prom Queen meets Class President.

Davis will portray Stella Cole, Madison's (Song) other best friend from college. She is effervescent, effortlessly cool, and filled with a childlike sense of wonder (if children wondered about things like ecstasy, vintage furniture and Peruvian soundbaths).

Comedy veteran Ira Ungerleider serves as showrunner on the series, executive producing alongside Dennings, creator-writer Weiss, Robbie, Hedblom and Tom Ackerley for LuckyChap; Unkeless and Morgan for Clubhouse Pictures, Nicole King as well as Stephanie Laing. Matt Spicer (Ingrid Goes West) will executive produce and direct the first episode, with Laing expected to direct subsequent episodes.

Song was a series regular on CBS medical drama Pure Genius and recently recurred on Station 19 and Superstore. She's repped by ICM Partners and Curtis Talent Management.

Davis was seen on the big screen in Sony's Superfly and Universal's The First Purge, and as Alyse Craig on CBS' Training Day. She's repped by CAA, Viewpoint LA and Luber Roklin Entertainment.

{blackbabes} How Taylor Swift helped Lupita Nyong’o survive a hard time

PARK CITY, Utah — One song holds a special place in Lupita Nyong'o's heart: "Shake It Off" by Taylor Swift.

"'Shake It Off' means a lot to me," the "Black Panther" star told the audience at the Sundance Film Festival Tuesday after a screening of her new comedy "Little Monsters."

In the film, Nyong'o plays a kindergarten teacher who needs to protect her students from a zombie invasion. Her character, Miss Caroline, sings the song "Shake It Off" while strumming a ukulele, to keep the kiddos calm and happy. And it was the Oscar-winning actress who helped get her favorite tune in the movie.

"I was going through a hard time professionally, and I was just in a funk," she said. "I was working abroad, and my best friend came to cheer me up. He played 'Shake It Off' on his phone, and we just had a dance party in my bedroom."

"It meant a lot to me that this film had that [song]," Nyong'o added. "And so when I heard that they were having a hard time [getting the rights] I wrote Taylor Swift myself and asked her, and told her that story. And she said yes!"

Most of all, they have to face the growing pains of their own snarky, makeshift family.

{blackbabes} Batwoman Pilot Adds Teen Wolf Alum Meagan Tandy, Two More to Cast

Batwoman Cast Meagan Tandy

The CW is lighting up the Bat-signal for a few more Batwoman cast members: Teen Wolf alum Meagan Tandy is among three new additions to the pilot's cast, our sister site Deadline is reporting.

Tandy will play Sophie Moore, a military academy graduate who works in Gotham as a high-level private security agent. The actress recently co-starred on MTV's Teen Wolf as Braeden — where she played the love interest of fellow Arrowverse member Tyler Hoechlin, aka Supergirl's Superman — along with regular roles on UnREAL and Survivor's Remorse.

Also joining the Batwoman pilot cast: Camrus Johnson (Luke Cage) as Lucius Fox's son Luke, who guards Bruce Wayne's estate while he's away; and Nicole Kang (YOU) as Kate Kane's excitable step-sister Mary Hamilton.

Batwoman — which landed an official pilot order at The CW earlier this month — stars Orange Is the New Black veteran Ruby Rose as lesbian vigilante Kate Kane. (The Vampire Diaries scribe Caroline Dries wrote the pilot and will serve as an executive producer.) Rose made her debut as Kate Kane/Batwoman in last fall's Arrowverse "Elseworlds" crossover event.

{blackbabes} Sherri Saum Joins Netflix's Locke & Key

Sherri Saum Locke Key Cast Netflix

Sherri Saum has a whole new TV family to deal with: The Fosters actress will play a central role in Netflix's upcoming Locke & Key adaptation, TVLine has learned exclusively.

In May, the comics-based drama nabbed a straight-to-series order at the streaming service. Carlton Cuse (Lost) will executive-produce alongside Joe Hill, creator of the original comic, and Meredith Averill (The Haunting of Hill House), among others. Cuse and Averill also will serve as co-showruneners.

The 10-episode Locke & Key tells the story of three siblings who move to Massachusetts after their father's murder. They soon discover that their new home hosts a set of magical keys, each of which give the children a different ability. Here's the problem: A demon wants the keys, too, and will do anything to obtain them.

Saum will play Ellie Whedon, a teacher at Matheson Academy who has a mysterious history with the Locke family. In addition to playing Fosters mom Lena, her TV credits include How to Get Away With Murder, Revenge, Gossip Girl, Rescue Me and One Life to Live.

Locke & Key does not yet have a release date. In December, Connor Jessup (American Crime), Emilia Jones and Jackson Robert Scott were cast as Locke siblings Tyler, Kinsey and Bode, respectively.

Luke Cage star Mike Colter and Nafessa Williams, who plays Thunder in the DC Comics-based CW series Black Lightning, have joined star Naomie Harris in the cop thriller, Black And Blue, which hails from Sony's Screen Gems. Deon Taylor is directing the film from a script by Peter A. Dowling.

It centers on a rookie New Orleans cop (Harris) who rounds the corner just as corrupt narc officers are murdering a drug dealer, an event captured by her body cam. When they then fail to execute her and she escapes, the narcs pin the murder on her, and she is hunted both by the narcs who are desperate to destroy the incriminating footage and the drug dealers out for revenge.

Frank Grillo, Reid Scott, Beau Knapp, and Tyrese Gibson are also set to co-star.

Sean Sorensen of Royal Viking Entertainment is producing with Taylor's Hidden Empire Film Group production shingle. Hidden Empire partner Roxanne Avent will serve as exec producer, while Eric Paquette is overseeing the project for Screen Gems.

{blackbabes} Serena to 'keep soldiering on' in search of 24th Slam

Melbourne (AFP) - Serena Williams vowed Wednesday to keep "soldiering on" in a bid to reach 24 Grand Slam titles, admitting her game needed work after a sensational collapse in the Australian Open quarter-finals.

The 37-year-old American rallied back from a set down against Karolina Pliskova and was leading 5-1 in the final set before losing six games in a row to crash out 6-4, 4-6, 7-5.

It was a cruel blow for a woman who has been chasing Margaret Court's 24 Slams since winning in Melbourne in 2017 while pregnant, then taking time off to have a baby before returning to Grand Slam action at the French Open last year.

She insisted another major win was still achievable despite the clock ticking.

"I mean, the big picture for me is always winning. I'm not going to sit here and lie about that," she said.

"But it hasn't happened yet, but I feel like it's going to happen. Just keep taking it one match at a time, just keep soldiering on, I guess."

Williams admitted that having a year off and then returning to high-level tennis had not been easy for someone who expected to bounce straight back to her old winning ways.

She said she has had to temper her expectations.

"It's definitely not easy for me. From day one, I expect to go out and, quite frankly, to win. That hasn't happened," she said.

"But I do like my attitude. I like that I don't want to go out here and say, 'I expect to lose because I had a year off, I've been playing for 10 months. I'm not supposed to win'.

"I don't have that attitude. I have the attitude of, 'I've only been playing 10 months, but I expect to win, and if I don't, it's disappointing'.

- No excuses -

"I rather think of it that way and know that it's going to happen sooner or later than making an excuse for myself. I don't like making excuses."

Against Pliskova, Williams rolled her ankle when serving for the match at 5-1, but refused to blame it for what happened afterwards, where she failed to win another point on serve in the match.

She said the big-serving Czech seventh seed was simply too good on the crunch points and she had learned lessons from the experience.

"I know there's a lot of things that I need to do, a lot of things I need to do to get better, a lot of maybe more just matches," she said, adding that losing doesn't get any easier.

"I don't really take losses well. But, like I said, Karolina literally played lights out starting 5-1, 40-30. Literally I've never seen anything like it.

"If anything, I think that's a little bit easier to know, 'Okay, next time I'm up 5-1 against anybody, whether it's her or anyone, I just need to make sure I play lights out when I have match point'."

{blackbabes} Serena turns ankle, wastes match points in loss to Pliskova

MELBOURNE, Australia — Four times, Serena Williams was only one point — a single point — from closing out a victory in the Australian Open quarterfinals.

On the first such chance, at 5-1, 40-30 in the third set, she turned her left ankle awkwardly. The owner of the best serve in the sport would lose every point she served the rest of the way.

And so it was that a startling reversal and result would follow Wednesday at Melbourne, with Williams dropping the last six games of a 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 loss to No. 7 seed Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic.

"I can't say that I choked on those match points," Williams said. "She literally played her best tennis ever on those shots."

The 37-year-old American didn't call for a trainer during the match and later wouldn't blame the ankle for the way everything changed down the stretch, saying afterward that it "seems to be fine."

But instead of Williams moving closer to an eighth championship at the Australian Open and record-tying 24th Grand Slam title overall, it is Pliskova who will continue the pursuit of her first major trophy.

"I was almost in the locker room," Pliskova told the Rod Laver Arena crowd, "but now I'm standing here as the winner."

In the semifinals, Pliskova will face No. 4-seeded Naomi Osaka, who advanced by beating No. 6 Elina Svitolina 6-4, 6-1 earlier Wednesday. The other women's semifinal will be two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova against unseeded American Danielle Collins.

In the men's quarterfinals Wednesday, 2016 Wimbledon runner-up Milos Raonic met No. 28 Lucas Pouille, before 14-time major champion Novak Djokovic was scheduled to face 2014 U.S. Open finalist Kei Nishikori at night.

Williams' surprising departure scuttled what would have been a much-anticipated rematch against Osaka, who beat her in the chaotic U.S. Open final last September.

This defeat is the earliest in Australia for Williams since way back in 2014, when she exited with a fourth-round loss to Ana Ivanovic. Since then? She won the tournament in 2015, lost in the final in 2016, and won again in 2017 while pregnant, before missing last year's edition a few months after the birth of her daughter.

As for chasing Margaret Court's all-time mark of 24 Slam trophies in singles, Williams said: "It hasn't happened yet, but I feel like it's going to happen."

The match against Pliskova was played under a stifling sun, with the temperature around 80 degrees (25 Celsius). Williams — coming off an intense three-set victory over No. 1 Simona Halep in the fourth round — often stepped into the patches of shade behind each baseline.

She did not start well, not well at all. Her mistakes were mounting and deficit was growing.

In the first set alone, Williams made more than twice as many unforced errors as her opponent, 11-5, a pattern that would continue throughout. By the end, the margin was 37-15.

Looking increasingly frustrated, Williams would yell at herself after mistakes or gesture as if to say, "That's NOT how I should be hitting the ball!" Add it all up, and Pliskova led by a set and a break at 3-2 in the second.

Only then did Williams get going. From there, she immediately earned her first break point of the match and converted it to get to 3-all, beginning a run in which she claimed nine of 11 games.

"You don't really feel," Pliskova said, "like you're going to win this match."

Serving for the victory at 5-1, 40-30, Williams was called for a foot fault — reminiscent of an infamous such ruling at the U.S. Open a decade ago. During the ensuing point Wednesday, Williams twisted her left ankle and dumped a forehand into the net.

She grabbed at her foot afterward, then double-faulted and would go on to cede that game.

Not a big deal, right? She still had a sizable lead.

Except that three more match points would follow while Pliskova served, and she saved each one.

"There's nothing I did wrong on those match points. I didn't do anything wrong. I stayed aggressive," Williams said. "She just literally hit the lines on some of them."

Williams would again serve for the match at 5-3 — and again get broken. The owner of the most feared and respected serve in women's tennis was broken for a third time in a row at 5-all, and Pliskova was on her way.

"She got a little bit shaky in the end," Pliskova said. "So I took my chances. And I won."

Osaka will carry a 12-match Grand Slam winning streak into the semifinals.

The 21-year-old from Japan moved closer to a second consecutive major championship by parlaying her aggressive and powerful style into a 31-11 edge in winners against Svitolina.

"For me, right now, I just try to keep looking forward. So I'm not really satisfied. Like, I am happy that I'm here, but at the same time, I want to keep going," said Osaka, who never had been past the fourth round at the Australian Open. "There is more matches to win."

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) -- Serena Williams and Naomi Osaka can set up a rematch of their chaotic U.S. Open final by winning quarterfinal matches at the Australian Open.

The No. 4-seeded Osaka faces No. 6 Elina Svitolina in the first quarterfinal in Rod Laver Arena on Wednesday.

That will be followed by Williams' matchup against No. 7 Karolina Pliskova.

Osaka beat Williams for the championship in New York last September in a match filled with all sorts of drama involving the American star and the chair umpire.

In Wednesday's men's quarterfinals at Melbourne Park, 2016 Wimbledon runner-up Milos Raonic faces No. 28 Lucas Pouille during the day, while 14-time major champion Novak Djokovic takes on 2014 U.S. Open finalist Kei Nishikori at night.

{blackbabes} Steely Serena in 'different space', ready for record Slam win - coach

Melbourne (AFP) - Serena Williams is emotionally and physically ready to win another Grand Slam, unlike during her famous meltdown in the final of the US Open last year, according to coach Patrick Mouratoglou.

The 37-year-old American stormed past top seed Simona Halep to reach the quarter-finals at the Australian Open on Monday, with the Romanian saying it felt like being "hit by a train".

Long-time coach Mouratoglou said Williams was in a different space to the one she occupied at Flushing Meadows, when she controversially lost the decider to Naomi Osaka during her comeback from having a baby.

In that match, Williams lost the plot, receiving a code violation for coaching, a penalty point for racquet abuse and a game penalty for calling the umpire a "liar" and a "thief".

Mouratoglou admitted "I don't think she was ready" to win a final back then.

"There is a big difference between reaching a final and winning it," he added.

But four months on from that chapter of her life that Williams now refuses to talk about, he said she was "back to being Serena".

"I think she's fitter than she was last year, because even though she made really a lot of efforts to come back in shape last year, I don't think she had enough time," he said.

"Having a baby is a big thing. So for a top-level athlete to come back and be 100 percent fit after having a baby any time, I think there was not enough time.

"So I think now she's ready physically. I think emotionally too because it's a big change in anyone's life to have a baby and you need to get used to a new life, and it took a bit of time.

"But I feel now she's back to being Serena on both the physical and emotional side. So I think her level is good. I think she needed a big fight, and it happened (against Halep) and I think it's a great thing," he added.

Williams, seeded just 16, beat world number one Halep 6-1, 4-6, 6-4, repelling a gutsy fightback from the Romanian after blitzing her in the first set.

She next plays seventh seed Karolina Pliskova for a place in the semi-finals, where she could meet either Osaka or sixth seed Elina Svitolina.

Asked if the 37-year-old could go on and win her eighth title in Melbourne to match Court's long-standing record, Mouratoglou replied: "Of course I believe she will win.

"First of all, I always think she can win, and she will win. I think I should be in that state of mind. Because she's Serena."

{blackbabes} Serena back to physical and emotional best, says coach

MELBOURNE (Reuters) - Serena Williams is back to her physical and emotional peak for the first time since returning from childbirth last year, according to the American's coach Patrick Mouratoglou.

The 37-year-old Williams produced a dazzling display to beat world number one Simona Halep in three sets in the fourth round of the Australian Open on Monday and looks in the mood to add to her 23 Grand Slam titles in Melbourne.

Williams, who won the 2017 Australian Open when pregnant with daughter Alexis Olympia, came close last year but lost two finals -- at Wimbledon to Angelique Kerber and at the U.S. Open to Naomi Osaka.

But Frenchman Mouratoglou believes she is now ready to matching Margaret Court's all-time record of 24 Slams.

"I think she's fitter than she was last year, because even though she made a lot of effort to come back in shape last year, I don't think she had enough time," he told reporters.

"For a top-level athlete to come back and be 100 percent fit after having a baby any time, I think there was not enough time.

"I feel now she's back to being Serena on both the physical and emotional side. I think her level is good. I think she needed a big fight, and it happened today."

Mouratoglou has been coach to Williams for seven years but their partnership came under the spotlight last year in a stormy U.S. Open final during which she was given a warning by umpire Carlos Ramos for off-court coaching from the Frenchman.

Despite her insistence that she had done nothing wrong, and subsequent loss of temper, Mouratoglou admitted afterwards that he had been passing on instructions.

Mouratoglou said he had not worried that it might end their fruitful relationship.

"First of all, I hope that every time a coach gets a code violation for coaching, he doesn't get fired, otherwise there will be guys fired every two days," he said.

"Second, I hope that our seven years' relationship is a bit stronger than a chair umpire.

"Third, she's much too smart to do that. It's not a reason for taking a decision that would have an impact on your future."

Asked if last year's disappointments had increased her motivation, Mouratoglou said: "I think she was very motivated last year, but it was just too early for her.

"I mean, she was ready to reach a final but there is a big difference between reaching a final and winning it.

"I didn't want to say it when she lost, because it sounds like an excuse, but you cannot buy time. Things take time."

{blackbabes} Serena Williams ousts No. 1 Simona Halep at Australian Open

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) As Serena Williams made her way out to the Australian Open's main court during pre-match introductions, the voice booming over the stadium's speakers implored spectators to welcome "the world's No. 1 player – from Romania, Simona Halep."

Oops.

Williams, wearing headphones, quickly pivoted and retreated back into the tunnel she'd just emerged from, making way for her fourth-round opponent Monday night. A couple of hours later, when Williams wrapped up her 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 victory over Halep in a contest filled with momentum swings and fantastic play by both, it was clear which woman really is No. 1, regardless of what the current rankings say.

"It was a really intense match, and it was some incredible points," said Williams, who improved to 9-1 against Halep and now meets 2016 U.S. Open runner-up Karolina Pliskova in the quarterfinals. "I love playing tennis and I love to play here and I love to be back out here."

The 37-year-old American sat out last year's Australian Open after giving birth to a daughter months earlier and dealing with health complications. Since returning to the tour, Williams has reached the past two Grand Slam finals, losing both – and leaving her still one shy of equaling Margaret Court's record of 24 major singles titles.

Halep offered up the first real test Williams has faced at this year's Australian Open, where she is bidding for an eighth trophy, pushing her throughout a back-and-forth matchup that was a fascinating mix of power, court coverage and shotmaking.

It wasn't until Williams saved three break points in a monumental game to hold for 3-all in the third set that she gained control.

"I was unlucky a little bit," Halep said.

Williams then broke for a 4-3 lead and finally was on her way.

"In order for me to stay out there, I had to play a little like I knew I could," said Williams, who is seeded 16th on account of all the time she took away from tennis while becoming a mother. "I'm such a fighter. I just never give up. It's definitely something that's innate. I just work so hard for every point."

That she does. She also makes abundantly clear just how much every point means to her.

Against Halep – who beat Serena's older sister, Venus, in the third round – Williams frequently pumped her fists or yelled "Come on!" after key exchanges. When Halep hit one shot that caught the net tape and barely trickled over for a winner, Williams looked pained and complained, "I mean, it's not fair."

Pliskova advanced earlier Monday with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over two-time major champion Garbine Muguruza.

Elina Svitolina. Osaka, who beat Williams in last year's U.S. Open final, edged No. 13 Anastasija Sevastova 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the fourth round, while Svitolina got past 2017 U.S. Open finalist Madison Keys 6-2, 1-6, 6-1.' data-reactid="31">The other quarterfinal on that side of the women's bracket features No. 4 Naomi Osaka against No. 6 Elina Svitolina. Osaka, who beat Williams in last year's U.S. Open final, edged No. 13 Anastasija Sevastova 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the fourth round, while Svitolina got past 2017 U.S. Open finalist Madison Keys 6-2, 1-6, 6-1.

Alexander Zverev 6-1, 6-1, 7-6 (5), and next takes on No. 28 Lucas Pouille, a 6-7 (4), 6-4, 7-5, 7-6 (2) winner over No. 11 Borna Coric. No. 23 Pablo Carreno Busta left the court yelling at the chair umpire after a disagreement in the concluding tiebreaker of his 6-7 (8), 4-6, 7-6 (4), 6-4, 7-6 (8) loss to No. 8-seeded Kei Nishikori in a 5-hour, 5-minute marathon that was the longest match of the tournament. Nishikori's quarterfinal foe will be No. 1-seeded and six-time champion Novak Djokovic, who overcame a couple of tumbles to the court and a series of energy-sapping baseline exchanges – one point lasted 42 strokes! – to beat No. 15 Daniil Medvedev 6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-2, 6-3.' data-reactid="32">In men's matches, 2016 Wimbledon runner-up Milos Raonic knocked off No. 4-seeded Alexander Zverev 6-1, 6-1, 7-6 (5), and next takes on No. 28 Lucas Pouille, a 6-7 (4), 6-4, 7-5, 7-6 (2) winner over No. 11 Borna Coric. Nishikori's quarterfinal foe will be No. 1-seeded and six-time champion Novak Djokovic, who overcame a couple of tumbles to the court and a series of energy-sapping baseline exchanges – one point lasted 42 strokes! – to beat No. 15 Daniil Medvedev 6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-2, 6-3.

After topping Medvedev in a 3-hour, 15-minute struggle to get back to the quarterfinals for the first time in three years, Djokovic joked during an on-court interview: "Since I guess my next opponent is watching, I'm feeling fantastic. I've never felt fresher in my life."

Williams and Halep traded jittery breaks of serve in the opening two games, as each double-faulted and flubbed shots. But Williams settled down first, compiling a 10-3 advantage in winners to grab the opening set.

"I felt," Halep said afterward, "like I had been hit by the train."

Halep then fell behind by a break in the second, before suddenly seeming to awaken and display her own brand of baseline talent that carried her to the Australian Open final and French Open championship in 2018.

Halep made only 12 unforced errors in the entire match, and that clean play got her back into things, especially as Williams' miscue count rose to a final tally of 31.

"She's back to being Serena on both the physical and emotional side. So I think her level is good," said Williams' coach, Patrick Mouratoglou. "I think she needed a big fight, and it happened today, and I think it's a great thing – especially when it ends like that."

Until facing Halep, Williams had dropped a total of only nine games through three matches in the tournament. Not only did Halep exceed that total, she also snapped Williams' 21-set Australian Open winning streak.

That dated to the start of Williams' run to the 2017 title, which she won while pregnant.

"Overall, I'm hanging in there. I think overall, I'm solid," Williams said. "I can definitely go to a new level. I have to if I want to stay in the tournament."

Because this was a night match, her 16 1/2-month-old daughter, Olympia, couldn't stay up to watch, Williams said, adding: "But we're going to have a fun morning tomorrow" watching films.

Williams joked she's seen "Frozen" and "Beauty and the Beast" several thousand times apiece.

"I'm like, `Olympia, there's a plethora of movies to choose from,"' Williams said. "`Can you choose another one?"'
