LONDON — Serena Williams’ doubles campaign at Queen’s Club could be over after one match.
Victoria Mboko, the American star's doubles partner, retired from her singles match against Karolina Pliskova on Wednesday after sustaining a knee injury in the second set.
Williams and Mboko had won their opening doubles match Tuesday — in the 44-year-old Williams' return to professional tennis after nearly four years away from the sport — and are scheduled to play again Thursday.
The 19-year-old Canadian slipped behind the baseline and immediately grabbed her left knee while facing Pliskova. Mboko lost the first set 6-2 and was up 4-3 in the second and trying to break with Pliskova serving at deuce.
Mboko got up on her own but then told a physiotherapist there was “no stability right now."
She walked gingerly to her bench and put a towel to her face as she sat down. Minutes later, she retired from the match.
Williams had previously announced that she will also play doubles at the Berlin Open next week.
On Tuesday, Williams and Mboko beat third-seeded duo Nicole Melichar-Martinez and Erin Routliffe 7-6 (2), 6-2 in Williams’ first professional match since the 2022 U.S. Open. They're scheduled to face Leylah Fernandez and Laura Siegemund in the quarterfinals.
Mboko is ranked No. 9 in singles.

Paramount+ has set a midsummer date for the Season 2 premiere of Diarra from Detroit. The eight-episode season will debut with two episodes on Wednesday, July 29, followed by one new episode weekly through September 9. The streamer also released some first-look photos which you can see above and below.
Created by and starring Kilpatrick, season two finds Diarra Brickland (Kilpatrick) trying — unsuccessfully — to have a hot girl summer without getting wrapped up in yet another deeply unserious and extremely dangerous Detroit mystery. This time around, what starts as a seemingly harmless furniture recovery mission quickly spirals into a triple homicide investigation, a citywide treasure hunt and another trip deep into Detroit’s criminal underbelly. As Diarra attempts to sort out her messy relationship status, she instead finds herself going undercover with a secret society, starring in a Tubi movie, chasing urban legends, dodging gang warfare, and uncovering secrets buried beneath the city itself. Because of course she does.
In addition to Kilpatrick, the series stars DomiNque Perry, Bryan Terrell Clark and Jon Chaffin with Shannon Wallace, Phylicia Rashad and Harry Lennix returning. Following its debut, Diarra From Detroit emerged as one of the year’s breakout critical successes. During its linear run on BET in early 2025, the show ranked as the No. 1 new series on cable among Black viewers year-to-date and topped key demos, including Black adults 18-49 and 25-54, and total Black viewers 2+, according to Nielsen. The series also earned multiple nominations from the NAACP Image Awards and Independent Spirit Awards and Kilpatrick won a Gracie Award for Actress in a Breakthrough Role (Drama) for her performance.

The series stars Amy Correa Bell and Alexander Piñeiro (City on Fire), who created the project and serve as co-directors.
Set in Los Angeles, 15 Minutes of Fame follows Tony and Jackie, two directionless Latino roommates struggling to survive adulthood while facing mounting financial pressure. After learning their rent is being raised, the pair embark on a reckless night out that inspires an impulsive idea of faking a movie and seeing who shows up. What begins as a joke spirals into something far more real and unexpectedly opens the door to Hollywood. As the line between fraud and opportunity begins to blur, the series explores ambition, identity, friendship, and the pursuit of purpose in an industry built on illusion.

LONDON — After nearly four years away from professional tennis, Serena Williams made a winning return at Queen’s Club on Tuesday.
The 44-year-old Williams showed she still has plenty of her trademark power, hitting service winners of up to 120 mph as she teamed up with 19-year-old Canadian Victoria Mboko to win their opening doubles match at the grass-court tournament.
Williams and Mboko beat third-seeded duo Nicole Melichar-Martinez and Erin Routliffe 7-6 (2), 6-2 in Williams’ first professional match since the 2022 U.S. Open. To punctuate that she's back, Williams served out the match with two aces followed by a service winner.
“It was so fun. I had so much fun playing with Victoria,” Williams said in an on-court interview. “She really was able to hold up the team and really play big on the big points. I could really rely on her. We’ve never played together but it just felt so natural playing with her.”
Mboko is one of the rising stars on the WTA tour, having already entered the top 10 in the rankings at No. 9.
“I feel very honored to play with Serena,” Mboko said, standing next to the 23-time Grand Slam winner. “I had a lot of fun, if anything. We really did that out there. I’m so happy to be playing beside you. And we’re going for more.”
Williams last week announced her return to doubles, but has yet to decide whether to target a comeback in singles as well.

Serena Williams will take part in her first professional tennis match in nearly four years on Tuesday after organisers confirmed the order of play at London's Queen's Club.
Granted a wildcard into the women's doubles of the WTA tournament, Williams and Canadian teenager Victoria Mboko will face third seeds Erin Routliffe and Nicole Melichar-Martinez in the grass-court event, a warm-up for Wimbledon.
Williams is one of tennis' all-time greats with 23 Grand Slam singles titles to her credit.
The 44-year-old American last played at the 2022 US Open when she said she was "evolving away from tennis".
Williams' return is fuelled by a desire for her two young daughters with husband Alexis Ohanian to see her in a competitive environment before she finally hangs up her racquet for good.
"It's really about the kids seeing me play," Williams told reporters at Queen's on Sunday. "Olympia is a little bit older, Adira is very young. It's components like that."
After competing at Queen's, Williams will take part in the doubles at the Berlin Open from June 15-21.
In her first press conference since announcing her return, Williams played down suggestions she would extend her return to singles competition.
But, with Wimbledon looming later in June, she did not completely rule out the possibility of featuring at a tournament she has won seven times.
"For singles, I can't say 'yeah' and I can't say 'no'," explained Williams. "Right now, no. I feel like I probably need to train a little bit more if I want to play singles.

Craig Zobel’s thriller Turpentine has rounded out its cast with the addition of Paul Walter Hauser (Resident Evil), Boyd Holbrook (A Complete Unknown), Michael Peña (A Working Man), Will Brill (The Musical), Teyonah Parris (No Good Deed), and Veronika Slowikowska (SNL).
Character details are under wraps, with production underway in Atlanta, Georgia. Previously announced cast includes Melissa McCarthy, Connor Storrie, and Bill Camp.
In Turpentine, after her son hires friends to steal the family’s antique gun collection to pay off a debt, a mother steps in to clean up the mess, triggering a chain of events that stretch the family bond to its limit.
Based on a script by Justin Varava that made the 2024 Black List, the film is produced by Rian Johnson and Ram Bergman’s T-Street and Shivani Rawat’s ShivHans Pictures. Producers include Katie McNeill, Ben LeClair, Rawat, Julie Goldstein, and Zobel. Executive producers are Connor Flanagan, Kenneth Yu, and McCarthy. Dan Watson and Nate Meyer serve as co-producers.
