Simon Cowell may have been the push Mel B needed to finally leave Stephen Belafonte.
Mel, 41, filed for divorce from Belafonte in March after nearly a decade of marriage, and has claimed that Belafonte physically abused her, sexually exploited her and got their nanny pregnant.
Cowell — who has worked with Mel on "X Factor," "America's Got Talent" and "Britain's Got Talent" — urged her to leave Belafonte, calling him "bad news" and "a bad guy," sources close to the former Spice Girl told TMZ.
Insiders told the site that Mel had previously attempted to leave Belafonte, but that she largely credits Cowell, 57, with giving her the courage to pack up for good.
On Friday, the sharp-tongued judge hinted that he was impressed with Mel's handling of the split.
"She's an incredible person. If you think about what Mel's done since leaving the Spice Girls and what she's gone through, how hard she works and how I saw her try to handle this situation, it was astonishing," he told The Sun. "She's under pressure but I think she's in a good place … she's had the whole thing she's had to deal with, the other side of her personal life. It really made me think about her as a person, what she's achieved as a working mum and how she's managed to balance everything."
Belafonte has denied Mel's allegations against him, and has also requested joint legal and physical custody of the couple's daughter, Madison, as well as spousal support.
Another of Mel's fellow "X Factor" judges, Sharon Osbourne, spoke out about the abuse allegations on "The Talk" last week, calling Belafonte a "bully."
"Three years ago, in the final two days of 'X Factor,' she didn't make the first day and she was in the hospital," Osbourne, 64, claimed. "It was reported in all the papers that said 'allegedly' she's been beaten by her husband. And she came back for the final day and she had a black eye and bruising everywhere … This has been brewing and people talking for a very, very long time."
