A Charlie Brown Christmas - Peanuts' Charlie Brown
Yes, it is confusing that En Vogue, a girl group that hasn't really been on the cutting edge of popular music since the '90s, has their own Lifetime movie, let alone a Christmas one. After watching it? Still confusing. But at least you realize that the story could've actually involved any band, real or fictional, and at least by using a real one the story is a little easier to stomach.
"An En Vogue Christmas" follows Terry Ellis, Cindy Herron and Rhona Bennett as versions of themselves who reunite to save a landmark San Francisco music venue in a Christmas concert. (See? Could've been anyone.)
Interestingly, as good as the ladies are at singing (which they do quite a bit, don't worry), they're also pretty good at acting. Usually when singers (or athletes or any non-actors) play themselves, there's a stilted quality to the performance since they're mostly just trying to spit out the lines they've memorized. But the women of En Vogue were surprisingly good at acting! You learn something new every day.
The problems, as with any Lifetime movie, are really with the script and story. But A+ screenwriting is not why you are watching a Lifetime movie, so does it really matter?
Ultimately, "An En Vogue Christmas" is exactly the slightly cheesy, contrived not-quite-mess you're looking for in a Lifetime Christmas movie, so if you didn't watch, feel free to set your DVR for one of the thousand other airings. Don't expect a hot mess, but don't expect the height of filmmaking either -- it's a Lifetime movie that's just right.
