News that singer Mariah Carey was in talks to play Commissioner Gordon in "The LEGO Batman Movie" came as something of a surprise to Deadline readers on the morning of Nov. 9. But The Hollywood Reporter later clarified that Carey won't be playing Gordon — actually, she'll be voicing the Gotham City mayor.
She is undoubtedly a diva, but Carey's stripped-down performance as a social worker in "Precious: Based On the Novel Push By Sapphire" shows that the singer isn't incapable of giving a good performance when de-glammed — plus, "The LEGO Batman Movie" is a comedy.
Since Will Arnett's LEGO Batman is cartoonishly serious, that means that the supporting cast around him can afford to get goofy. Carey is famous for her eight-octave range … hopefully included somewhere in there is the ability to deliver some pretty silly jokes.
This also means that Gotham City has a female mayor, which makes Carey only the second female character added to the film after Rosario Dawson's Batgirl. Since "The LEGO Movie" only had one significant female character, adding more women to the spinoff is a good choice.
"The LEGO Batman Movie" will be released on Feb. 10, 2017.
