In A+E Studios' first sale for an outside network, the studio has set up drama Murder Town, starring and executive produced by Jada Pinkett Smith, at ABC with a put pilot commitment.
Written by veteran showrunner Barry Schindel (Intelligence, Castle) based on an original script by Rob Fresco, Murder Town centers on a beautiful and complicated prosecutor (Pinkett Smith) who makes history as Wilmington, Delaware's, first African American District Attorney. She finds herself confronted by old loyalties and loves, a shocking revelation about her murdered husband and a polarizing, racially-charged case that threatens to burn her and her city to the ground.
Schindel and Pinkett Smith executive produce alongside Miguel Melendez for Overbrook Entertainment and A+E Studios.
Pinkett Smith is coming off a season-long starring role on Fox's Gotham and a co-starring turn in Magic Mike XXL. She is repped by Paradigm and attorney Jason Sloan. Schindel is represented by CAA and attorney Tom Hoberman.
A+E Studios, which was launched in 2014 with Barry Jossen at the helm and Tana Nugent Jamieson as head of development, produces Lifetime's well received drama UnReal, which was renewed for a second season and A+E Network's high-profile Roots remake. The studio also has A&E 1990s crime drama pilot The Infamous.
Murder Town is looking to add to ABC's formidable lineup of dramas toplined by A-list actresses of diverse background, hits Scandal, starring Kerry Washington, How To Get Away With Murder, topined by Viola Davis, and Quantico starring Priyanka Chopra.
