Despite the ups and downs of their fiery relationship, Halle Berry and Olivier Martinez "spent a lot of time working on their marriage," a source tells PEOPLE in this week's issue. "It's been a roller coaster from the start."
According to a source, Martinez was still reflecting positively on his marriage up to a week before they each filed divorce petitions. "Olivier loved being married," a source close to Martinez tells PEOPLE. "A divorce was never the plan."
Lingering custody issues with Gabriel Aubry, Berry's ex-boyfriend and father of her 7-year-old daughter Nahla, caused tensions with Martinez, culminating in a nasty Thanksgiving day brawl between the two men.
But after the birth of Maceo-Robert, Berry and Martinez's only child together, "Olivier did seem very happy," the source says, adding that he "very much loves being a dad." Martinez's son also helped him cope with living in Los Angeles, a city he never felt comfortable in.
The couple's relationship seemed to be improving after the source says they enjoyed "a nice summer together." But just when "things were starting to calm down," they were both hit with a $5 million lawsuit after Martinez was caught on video shoving an LAX employee with a child's car seat.
"Olivier is the first person to say that Halle works very hard to provide for her family," says the source. "When she found out about the lawsuit, she was done." Another source close to Martinez contends the split was a long time coming. "Olivier and Halle have been at odds for a long time. After a while, there was very little left to salvage."
Regardless of what led them to their divorce, sources on both sides say they want to avoid a custody fight. "They want to work it out as loving parents so each can spend a lot of time with Maceo," an insider says. "He deserves that and more."
