Viola Davis makes history at the 2015 Primetime Emmy Awards by being the first black woman to win the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series category.
Davis, along with co-nominee Taraji P. Henson ("Empire"), are only the sixth and seventh black women to be nominated for the category in the Emmy's 67-year history. During her speech, Davis makes note of her historic achievement by quoting Harriet Tubman.
"In my mind, I see a line. And over that line, I see green fields, and lovely flowers, and beautiful white women, with their arms stretched out to me over that line, but I can't seem to get there no how, I can't seem to get over that line. That was Harriet Tubman in the 1800s."
Davis then goes on to say that finally making it to that stage is due to finally being given the opportunity to play a role that merits Emmy gold.
"And let me tell you something. The only thing that separates women of color from anyone else is opportunity. You cannot win an Emmy for roles that are simply not there. So here's to all the writers, the awesome people, that are Ben Sherwood, Paul Lee, Peter Knowalk, Shonda Rhimes — people who have redefined what it means to be beautiful, to be sexy, to be a leading woman, to be black."
Then the "How to Get Away with Murder" actress goes on to thank the other notable black actresses in Hollywood — on TV and in film — that have been paving the way for women of color to find their place in the spotlight.
"And to the Taraji P. Hensons, the Kerry Washingtons, the Halle Berrys, the Nicole Beharies, the Meagan Goods, to Gabrielle Union — thank you for taking us over that line. Thank you to the television academy. Thank you."
Davis' win is made even more historic by the fact that "Orange Is the New Black" star Uzo Aduba also winning the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama, making it the first time in history that two black women have taken home both actress categories in the genre.
