Many people know actress Debbi Morgan for her role as Dr. Angie Hubbard on the ABC soap opera, "All My Children," so much so that when fans see her out in the street, they call her Angie. But in her one-woman show, "The Monkey on My Back," Morgan opened up about her own life's journey, from fear and abuse to empowerment and self-love.

The proverbial "monkey on my back" refers to the cycle of physical and emotional abuse that her grandmother and her mother went through. That cycle continued in Morgan's own relationships, starting with the drug-dealing boyfriend of her youth and continuing through four marriages, with her fourth marriage to Jeffrey Winston being the charm.

An Emmy-award winning actress, Morgan gives her own story as much gusto, vulnerability and energy as she gives to her film, theatrical and television roles. She plumbs the dark emotions of her painful past. But she also brings a sharp and biting sense of humor.

Directed by Denise Dowse, the show is simple, with old family pictures and moments from Morgan's past projected on the screen. There are happy moments, as she describes the impact of her mentor, Jim Mendenhall, who encouraged her to become an actress after he saw her in a high school production of A Midsummer's Night Dream, where she played the role of Puck.

And there are not-so-happy moments, such as when she heard her mother being abused as a child and wished her father would die, or the mean things her second husband said and did to her (though she never says his name, she provides enough details that you can figure out who he is just by Googling him).

But Morgan owns all of her life, the good and the bad, the beautiful and the ugly, because in the end, she dug her way out and found her path to her own joy.
