Sitcom best friend no more. Former My Boys co-star Kellee Stewart is set to topline her own comedy series, teaming with former My Boys co-executive producer Sebastian Jones for BBF (Black Best Friend) a single-camera comedy based on her life. It is executive produced by Cedric the Entertainer, on whose TV Land comedy series The Soul Man Stewart recurred, playing his sister-in-law. BBF has been set up at Fox through 20th Century Fox TV with a script commitment.

For over a decade, actress Kellee Stewart has built a career by playing the black best friend on TV sitcoms. Written by Jones, BBF blows up the trope and hijacks the camera away from the usual white female lead and onto the black best friend. It follows a black woman, caught between two cultures, who steps out of the shadows of her friends in search of her authentic self.

Barbershop 2 The Next Cut Los Angeles Premiere, Los Angeles, USA - 06 Apr 2016

In addition to starring, Stewart, who helped conceive the series with Jones, is executive producing alongside him as well as Cedric the Entertainer and Eric Rhone via Cedric's Bird and a Bear Entertainment. Jeff Melnick (The Soul Man, Hot In Cleveland) serves as a producer.

Stewart was a series regular on the TBS comedy My Boys, playing best friend to the lead, played by Jordana Spiro. Her feature credits include the Hot Tub Time Machine franchise. She co-stars in the indie Hunter Gatherer, which opens in Los Angeles next month after a premiere at South by Southwest. Stewart is repped by Domain, Robyn Bluestone Management and Meyer & Downs.

Jones is currently a co-executive producer on the Netflix's One Day At A Time revival. He started on Spin City, and his series credits also include Hot In Cleveland and Friends. He is repped by ICM Partners.

Cedric the Entertainer co-created, executive produced and starred in The Soul Man, which ran on TV Land for five seasons, after first guest starring on the network's Hot In Cleveland. He was recently seen reprising his role in the latest Barbershop movie, The Next Cut. Cedric is repped by CAA, Visions Management and attorneys Gordon Bobb and Nina Shaw.
