"Ain't none of us free, till we all free."

The simple, yet profound nature of Rosalee's (Jurnee Smollett-Bell) words have a resonance that echo the overall driving theme of WGN America's "Underground." Between her heart and Noah's muscle, it's safe to say the journey to freedom will take us on an interesting road when the series returns for Season 2.

Rosalee gets her first real taste of freedom in the Season 1 finale, titled "White Wale" — which aired on Wednesday night (May 11). However, with Noah (Aldis Hodge) captured and the rest of her proverbial brothers and sisters still held at the Macon Plantation, she decides the fight is not over. It's a heroic move to take and one that will ultimately setup the main story that takes place in future episodes.

Poor Noah, though. With all the work he's done to break free — and all the loved ones lost along the way — he finds himself back in chains. It's an intriguing twist the series has taken in adding historical figure, Martha "Patty" Cannon (Brigid Brannagh) to the mix.

During the time of the Underground Railroad, Miss Cannon was one of the driving forces in attempting to block the progression of freed slaves. The accounts of her actions make us wonder just how gruesome the hunt will become. It's unclear as of yet if her and August Pullman (Christopher Meloni) will team up, as it seems they are competitors who don't really like one another.

Speaking of August … it looks like Rosalee did not kill his boy last week, but the injuries he sustained leads Pullman to seek John Hawkes' (Marc Blucas) help of all people. The following moments play out in a scene slightly reminiscent of "Inglorious Basterds" and unfortunately for those hidden under the floor boards, Pullman isn't easily fooled. This begins a chase that leads him face to face with the main cause of his rage: Tom Macon's (Reed Diamond) daughter.

Oh, right … there's also that detail. During that whole anxiety-inducing scene, Pullman ends up advising Hawkes that Rosalee is not just a slave on the run, she is also his kin. It seems that Ernestine  (Amirah Vann) was not only having an affair with his plantation owning brother — she also had his children.

The fact that the man who allowed Rosalee to be whipped — the man she hallucinated she killed — was also her father was a huge bombshell. Talk about some serious daddy issues! But before she could really process this information — after just beginning to process Sam's death (also Tom's son?) — she had to flee.

Of course, she doesn't kill Pullman when she has the chance. Suffering a gunshot in the gut — the same place his son was stabbed — will probably only add fuel to the vengeful fire building between the two. August's white wale gets away … again.

This brings us back around to Rosalee who, thanks to Noah's sacrifice, makes it to freedom with Boo (Darielle Stewart). But she takes a heroic stance to head back with a mission of freeing every slave from Tom Macon's grip. But with Ernestine getting the jump on her not-so-secret lover — with a surprise lynching, no less — who will step up in his place? Someone has to, right?

One thing we do know is … when "Underground" returns for its Season 2 run, Rosalee will be coming with some badass reinforcements as Harriet Tubman (Kesha Bullard) has officially joined the fight.
