Kerry Washington is opening up about one of the benefits of working on a Shondaland show.
Asked about experiencing sexism in Hollywood as an actress, the Scandal star told The Hollywood Reporter her work environment is a little different than the typical set.
"I'm in this very surreal environment right now having Shonda Rhimes as my boss, where it's almost the opposite," she said during THR's actress roundtable. "It is specified in scripts that guys take their shirts off all the time."
Washington, 39, went on to say that Rhimes allows her female stars a little more leeway when it comes to showing skin.
"The guys are naked all the time! And she has said to all the women on the show: 'You want to do a love scene in a parka? You just let me know,' " said Washington. "So it's this weird, like, reparations moment where the girls get to do what they want to do and the guys get to do what they want to do, but they know what Shonda wants them to do."
Tony Goldwyn, who plays the chiseled President Fitz Grant on the show, opened up last year about what it's like being a guy on the show.
"Shonda's rule is, 'Women can wear whatever they want. The guys have to take their clothes off whenever I tell them to,' " Goldwyn told Fox 5 New York in October. "So Scott and I every week, we'd be reading these scripts out loud, we do it all together, and one of us would turn the page and our shirt would be off so we're like 'You're on deck,' 'You're up.' "
Scandal ended its season last week with a cliffhanger that had fans buzzing on Twitter. ABC has pushed the next season to midseason next year to accommodate Washington's pregnancy, which was made public earlier this month.
