Williams, 34, only ran part of the way through her annual charity race Sunday.
In a Facebook video she posted later that day from the finish line, she said, "I didn't run the whole way this year, but next year I will."
Her Serena Williams Live Ultimate Run in Miami Beach, Florida, raises money for the Serena Williams Fund, which focuses on "helping individuals and communities affected by senseless violence, and promoting equal access to education."
The run has three levels – a quarter marathon, a 5k and an ultimate kids' dash.
"It's no secret I've played injured most of the year – whether it was my elbow, my knee, or, in the final moments after a certain match in Flushing, my heart," Williams said after announcing her withdrawal in October, according to ESPN.
"This is a very difficult decision," she said, "but one ultimately made because of the love of the game."
But, Williams said, "I plan to return to practicing and participating in exhibition matches later this year.
"And when I do, l will focus and focus and focus so I can continue my journey in this beautiful game."
In her Facebook video Sunday, Williams cheers on the rest of the runners and also pulls in her sister and fellow tennis champ Venus Williams for a cameo.
"She ran really fast today," Serena says in the video.
To which Venus replies, "Not as fast I wanted."
