Kim Kardashian has her bodysuits. Pharrell has his hat. And Mariah Carey has her … fingerless gloves?! Sure, it’s a strange accessory to bring to the red carpet, but the singer’s obsession with gloves continues to evolve. So it’s time to recap.

At the SAG Awards in January, Carey skipped the gown-and-diamonds combo most stars were wearing for a one-shoulder LBD and leather motorcycle-inspired gloves. If her goal was to get people talking, she certainly achieved it. Next, she went for a more casual pair of knit black mitts that let her red mani shine and coordinated with her low-cut black dress at an MTV event in February.

But the most recent chapter in the “Mariah Carey Fingerless Gloves” saga is definitely the most interesting (and makes us wish we could get a look inside her accessories closet). Carey wore a pair of silver stunners that perfectly matched her metallic nails for the Fresh Air Fund gala in downtown Manhattan Thursday, to which she took the subway. And though we suppose they could have been a germ-prevention measure on the grimy N.Y.C. subway, we’re pretty sure these were a purely style-based decision.
