Eryka Badu and folk singer/songwriter Darden Smith became fast friends over a window seat on a flight from Dallas/Ft. Worth to Salt Lake City the other day. Smith, who's based in Austin, recounted on his Facebook page how he didn't recognize the earthy soul singer as they were boarding. When he asked Badu if he could perhaps switch to the window seat, she "looked at me over her glasses and said, 'Baby, I wrote a song about getting the window seat. It's the way I roll.' " (Badu released "Window Seat" in 2010). Smith responded, "Well I wrote a song about falling off a horse, so big deal. What about switching seats?" Badu refused. They introduced themselves. "You a musician?" Smith asked. "Yes," she laughed and pulled out her phone. "Here's a copy of one of my albums." Smith wrote what happened next: "I looked. And damn near fell out of my seat. 'Oh [bleep], You're Eryka Badu. Hi. I'm an idiot.' We talked for three hours straight, DFW to Salt Lake. What a sweetheart." Smith posted a photo on his Facebook page of the two together after the flight.
