A very sharp knife seems to be what's needed to cut the acrimonious child custody air between Montreal supermodel Gabriel Aubry and Hollywood star Halle Berry these days.

A knife or, better yet, a reincarnation of wise old King Solomon who resolved the quarrel over the ownership of a baby by suggesting the child be cut in two. Of course, the woman who was ready to give the child up rather than be killed was declared the true mother.

But I digress"¦

When the Catwoman star and Calvin Klein model split up last year after five years together, they insisted it was amicable.

Sure, Berry, 45, was upset. It was reported that Aubry, nine years her junior, had grown tired of the age difference and was ready to move on.

But there was the promise of an easy peasy 50-50 custody split of their then two-year-old daughter, Nahla. Aubry was not suing Berry for any of her Hollywood dough, as he could have. He just wanted equal access to their daughter.

What a difference a year has made! Yes, Aubry has kept his agreement that he would not sue Berry for any money. But Berry simply hates the 50-50 custody split and is doing everything in her power to gain full custody of their daughter.

Her public relations team has put out to local media that Nahla, now three, cries and throws tantrums whenever dad picks her up for a visit.

A "sealed" court document was also leaked about the actress' fears that Aubry "neglects" the girl.

She has hired the top family lawyers -- read: the most expensive -- in L.A. to fight Aubry over custody -- knowing full well that Aubry doesn't have the money to waste on legal fees.

Berry's high-flying legal team has taken Aubry to court at least a half-dozen times, reportedly with complaints as silly as Aubry feeding Nahla pizza.

An Aubry source said whenever Nahla goes back to mom's house after spending time with dad, "Halle gives her the third degree about what she ate, what time she went to bed or who was there with them."

It has also been reported that Berry -- who suffers from diabetes and wants her daughter on the same strict diet she is on -- had a "nuclear level meltdown" when Nahla told her that daddy gave her a piece of pizza.

"Halle called screaming," an Aubry source said. "She micromanages everything he does. He has no freedom to do what he wants. Every time he doesn't follow every rule, she takes him back to court."

As for Nahla screaming every time Dad picks her up, my source said, "it's just not true. She loves her dad and runs to him when he walks through the door."

I can only imagine the psychological torture of these parents fighting over a child whom they both love and both want to spend more time with. Contrary to what many people believe, being beautiful and rich does not ease heartache.
