LOS ANGELES -- Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling!
Theirs was surely one of the most endearing Canadian love stories in recent real life/movie-going memory.
But since it ended more than three years ago, it has been one big, fat drag for some fans who simply refuse to give up the notion that their love must end happily ever after.
"Please, please, PLEASE stay together, forever and always," one of the many still bummed-out fans just posted on one of the tens of dozens of blog stories -- including one called "Get back together, already" -- still circulating about the couple.
If McAdams and Gosling could just fall apart, well, then, what about us? What about our happily ever afters? Do happy endings even exist?
We all know how it started: The beautiful McAdams and the equally handsome and charming Gosling met in 2004 on the set of the romantic film, The Notebook. Their onscreen chemistry spilled into their souls and they fall for each other -- for real!
For the next three years, a happy, hopeful public cooed whenever the glorious pair appeared in public. Gosh, the fact they were even born in the same London, Ont. hospital just cemented how the galaxy had truly aligned for this storybook love affair.
Like their characters in The Notebook, Allie and Noah, fans believed the McAdams and Gosling coupling would endure forever and always. When it didn't, celeb watchers -- whose imaginations were equally captured by this couple as it was, say, by the Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton romance was for the past movie-loving generation -- felt betrayed.
A couple of weeks ago, I saw a video of Gosling, now 29, posted to some Internet site. He was on his motorcycle signing some autographs after a day of filming his latest movie, Drive, in Los Angeles, when a woman behind him screamed: "What about Rachel? GO BACK TO RACHEL!" The affable Gosling smiled and shrugged.
"Women are mad at me ... a girl came up to me on the street and almost smacked me," Gosling admitted in a rare interview he gave GQ magazine about the subject. He said fans were so heart-broken over his break-up, he felt as if he should be giving them all hugs. "Rachel and I should be the ones getting hugs! Instead, we're consoling everybody else."
When he briefly dated the worthy actress Michelle Williams, there were no congratulations to be found. These are the only types of comments left online about the relationship: "Ryan, your true love is Rachel," and "How I wish (Ryan and Rachel) will be always and forever..."
When the "shattering" news broke a couple of months ago that McAdams, 31, is now hot and heavy with Welsh actor Michael Sheen, 41, whom she met on the set of Midnight in Paris -- the Internet cries became a wail.
"EW!"
"Blech!"
"She belongs with Ryan! We romantics just don't give up."
"How sad!!!"
Yet, somehow, it is dawning on some that McAdams and Sheen could be a real happily ever after too. They do look awfully cosy together.
Maybe it's also dawning on fans that McAdams and Gosling really won't get back together and it's time to cut them a break.
One brave woman offered this well-wished comment to McAdams about Sheen: "He's a terrific actor and quite a catch. Go Rachel!"
Then again ....
Maybe, just maybe, McAdams and Gosling will bump accidently into each other on top of the CNN tower in a few years, realize what drew them together in the first place is still lodged in their souls and declare, "Darling, everyone was right. We do belong together! Let us not tarry, let us be married..."
To hope or not to hope? That is the question.

You're wrong about Ryan and Michelle. There are PLENTY of fans out there who are overwhelmed with joy about them together. As one fan puts it, "If Rachel cannot be with Ryan, than Michelle would be would do!" Or as another says, "SUCH A GORGEOUS COUPLE!!!" You see, not every fan out there is still hoping on McGosling. Some are ready to move on. And I personally just adore the Ryan and Michelle coupling. ♥♥♥
P.S.
As much as it pains me to say this. they're not a couple (Ryan and Michelle), they never were. As Gosling's reps puts it, "He's cozy with everyone". But wouldn't it be just AMAZING if they were?! I still have hope...
