{blackbabes} Kim Cattrall’s ‘Filthy Rich’, Spectrum Drama ‘L.A.’s Finest’ Get Fox Premiere Dates & Trailer

As we roll toward the coronavirus-disrupted fall TV season, Fox has set premiere dates for a pair of drama series. Its Kim Cattrall-fronted Filthy Rich will bow at 9 p.m. Monday, following the 8 p.m. launch of Spectrum Originals pickup L.A.'s Finest, starring Gabrielle Union and Jessica Alba.

Watch the trailer for Filthy Rich above.

When Fox released its initial fall schedule back in May, Filthy Rich was set for the 9 p.m. Tuesday slot, with Season 1 of L.A.'s Finest as the lead-in for new AI drama neXt on Mondays. That John Slattery-fronted show now is taking the 9 p.m. Monday slot, as Fox revealed a week ago.

Created by Tate Taylor, Filthy Rich stars Sex and the City alumna Cattrall as Margaret Monreaux, the matriarch of a mega-rich Southern family famous for creating a wildly successful Christian television network. After her husband dies in a plane crash, Margaret and family are stunned to learn that he fathered three illegitimate children, all of whom are written into his will — threatening their family name and fortune. Melia Kreiling, Aubrey Dollar, Corey Cott, Benjamin Levy Aguilar, Mark L. Young and Olivia Macklin co-star along with Steve Harris and Aaron Lazar.

Filthy Rich writer-director Taylor executive produces the series from 20th Century Fox Television, Imagine Television and Fox Entertainment alongside Brian Grazer, Francie Calfo, John Norris and showrunner Abe Sylvia. Cattrall is a producer.

Spawned from the universe of Jerry Bruckheimer's Bad Boys movie franchise L.A.'s Finest stars Union and Alba as cops taking on the most dangerous criminals in Los Angeles. Union plays Syd Burnett, last seen in Miami taking down a drug cartel, who has seemingly left her complicated past behind to become an LAPD detective. Paired with a new partner, Nancy McKenna (Alba), a working mom with an equally complex history, Syd is forced to confront how her unapologetic lifestyle may be masking a greater personal secret.

Fox will air Season 1 of L.A.'s Finest, which debuted exclusively on Spectrum in May 2019. Produced by Sony Pictures Television, its second season was slated to premiere June 8 on the cabler's channel but was pushed at the last minute amid the protests over George Floyd's death. The new season's premiere date now is TBD.

{blackbabes} Alicia Keys To Exec Produce American Masters Doc On Black Entertainers For PBS

Popstar Alicia Keys is to exec produce a feature-length documentary about six iconic African American female entertainers for PBS.

American Masters: How It Feels To Be Free will tell the story of Lena Horne, Abbey Lincoln, Nina Simone, Diahann Carroll, Cicely Tyson and Pam Grier and how they challenged an entertainment industry deeply complicit in perpetuating racist stereotypes, and transformed themselves and their audiences in the process.

The doc, which will air in early 2021 on PBS and the Documentary Channel in Canada, features interviews and archival performances with all six women, as well as original conversations with artists influenced by them, including Keys, Halle Berry, Lena Waithe, Meagan Good, LaTanya Richardson Jackson and Samuel L. Jackson, as well as family members, including Horne's daughter Gail Lumet Buckley.

It is based on the book How It Feels To Be Free: Black Women Entertainers and the Civil Rights Movement by Ruth Feldstein.

American Masters: How It Feels To Be Free is produced by Yap Films in association with American Masters Pictures, ITVS, Chicken & Egg Pictures. Michael Kantor, Alicia Keys, Lacey Schwartz Delgado, Mehret Mandefro, Elliott Halpern and Elizabeth Trojian are executive producers. Yoruba Richen is director. Fremantle holds global distribution rights (ex-U.S. and Canada) to the documentary.

It was announced as part of PBS's Virtual Press Tour.

Director Yoruba Richen said, "At this unprecedented time of racial reckoning and as Hollywood is reassessing its role in perpetuating racist stereotypes, now is the perfect moment to tell the stories of these path-breaking women who have inspired generations of Black female superstars—like Keys, Halle Berry, Issa Rae, Ava DuVernay and Lena Waithe—who continue to push boundaries and reshape how African American women are seen onscreen."

Alicia Keys said, "I am proud to be a part of such a meaningful, important project. Art is the most powerful medium on the planet, and I continue to be inspired by and learn from these powerful, brave and stereotype-shattering women who leveraged their success as artists to fearlessly stand up against racism, sexism, exclusion and harassment. I honor their courage by celebrating their stories and continuing the work they started."

Harry Gamsu, Vice President of Non-Scripted Content Acquisitions, Fremantle, added, "Throughout the course of history, the stories of Black women have been consistently overlooked and ignored. Now we are witnessing incredible stories like these being told by Black women, and we are honored to be a partner in helping bring these voices to a global audience."

{blackbabes} Taraji P. Henson Developing ‘Empire’ Spinoff In New First-Look Deal With 20th Century Fox TV

The end of Empire may be just have been a stepping stone to a whole lot of Cookie.

Development of a spinoff of the Danny Strong and Lee Daniels created series' iconic matriarch is the first order of business in a new first look deal that Taraji P. Henson has signed with 20th Century Fox TV.

To that end, the Golden Globe winning and Emmy and Academy Award nominated Henson has teamed up with Working Title alum Christine Conley to have the latter run her newly formed TPH Entertainment.

Coming out the gate, the long rumored Cookie series will be penned and EP'd by Strong, Stacy Littlejohn and Yolonda Lawrence. With Empire vet Sanaa Hamri set to direct, the trio will serve as co-showrunners on the spinoff if the Henson, Daniels, Brian Grazer and Samie Falvey EP'd LA-set project goes to pilot. Strong re-upped his own deal with 20th Century Fox TV last year and has various projects on the go with the Disney-owned unit.

Even before the coronavirus pandemic induced earlier than expected conclusion of once blockbuster Empire's sixth and final season on Fox back in April, both Henson and Daniels made no secret of their shared desire to see Cookie's saga continue.  "I don't know what that is and I'm not a part of it, but I wouldn't be surprised if someone was trying to work on something," Empire showrunner Brett Mahoney asserted in the spring of the possible spinoff.

And now they are.

"I believe that normalizing stories around stigmatizing matters will make them more palatable for audiences to embrace," Henson said today of the new two-year deal and TPH.

"Art can change perception and I plan to develop projects that can help further the conversation," the Hidden Figures star added. "I also aim to help cultivate and establish new young talent and their stories because they are our future and deserve a voice and a platform to be heard. I'm so excited to have 20th, led by the talented Carolyn Cassidy, support me in this new endeavor!"

And with more Empire on the menu, 20th are clearly pretty excited too.

"We were lucky to have a front row seat to Taraji's meteoric rise as a fixture on television through Empire," declared 20th Century Fox TV president Cassidy Thursday. "Through that relationship everyone at the company grew to appreciate her passion for storytelling and her strong creative gut instinct. With Empire finished we look forward to helping her explore stories that need to be told through her talent and advocacy."

In addition to an Empire spinoff, Henson and TPH Entertainment's agreement with 20th will also include other projects for multiple platforms.

Taraji P. Henson is repped by UTA and law firm  Ziffren Brittenham. Ex-Working Title TV VP Conley is repped by attorney Patti Felker.

{blackbabes} Tia Mowry Developing Family-Style Clip Show With Kin & Jukin Media

Tia Mowry, who stars in Netflix comedy Family Reunion, is developing her own family-style clip show after teaming with Kin and Jukin Media.

The actress is working up Tia Mowry's Challenge Accepted with the two companies as a pilot.

It will feature weekly home challenges with audience members encouraged to participate by submitting their own challenge videos. It will showcase humorous moments that families have experienced during quarantine and Mowry's own family members will make surprise cameos. Mowry and her executive Tiegen Kosiak are producing.

It comes after Mowry started working with digital media company Kin in 2017 on Tia Mowry's Quick Fix, which has over 2.6M fans on Facebook, YouTube and Instagram TV. She also has a spin-off show with Facebook Watch called Tia Mowry's Quick Fix Presents Comfort Kitchen, which debuted late last year.

Jukin Media produces user-generated entertainment and operates digital video properties including FailArmy, People Are Awesome and The Pet Collective.

Mowry shot to fame in the 1990s on family comedy Sister Sister and has also starred on The CW and BET's The Game.

Mowry said, "When I first had the idea for the show, I knew working with Kin on it would be a perfect fit.  I am excited to get to know and work with the team at Jukin as well."

"By combining Tia's star power, Kin's programming expertise and Jukin's world-class library of viral videos, Tia Mowry's Challenge Accepted is poised to attract large audiences" said Kin CEO Michael Wayne. "The stars have aligned around this collaboration, which is sure to produce a show that will excite fans across all platforms."

"With a first-rate production partner in Kin, and an amazing talent in Tia, we couldn't be more excited or optimistic about Tia Mowry's Challenge Accepted," added Jonathan Skogmo, Founder and CEO of Jukin Media. "The show will provide all the fun, light-hearted moments that families are really seeking in their programming given the state of the world right now."

UTA, who also reps Mowry, packaged the project.  Mowry is also represented by Vault Entertainment, True Public Relations and Felker, Toczek, Suddleson, Abramson.

{blackbabes} ‘Power Book II: Ghost’ Adds Sherri Saum To Spinoff Cast

The first of many Power spinoffs is set to debut in September and a lot of the Courtney Kemp-created series is still under lock and key. However, today we have more of sense as to who the new players will be and who they will be working for.

Coming off a shapeshifted role on the first season of Netflix's Locke & Key, Sherri Saum has joined Power Book II: Ghost for its first season, I've learned.

The Fosters alum will play Paula Matarazzo on the Mary J. Blige, Michael Rainey Jr, Naturi Naughton and Cliff 'Method Man' Smith-led Ghost.

Picking up not long after the fatal and incarcerating February 9 airing conclusion of the sixth and final season of Power, Saum's Matarazzo is the top investigator and right-hand of Smith's arrogant defense lawyer Davis MacLean. All of which means the hard-driven ex-law enforcement character could prove a major player in this expansion of Kemp's franchise on Starz – especially as MacLean may be instrumental (or not) in getting Naughton's Tasha St. Patrick out of jail for the supposed murder of her husband, one James St, Patrick/Ghost.

Having started out on soap Sunset Beach back in the late 1990s, and snagged a Daytime Emmy nomination in the process, before moving on to One Life to Live, Saum in more recent years was one of the leads with Terri Polo on five seasons of Freeform's extended family drama The Fosters.

The Peter Paige and Bradley Bredeweg-created show ended in 2018, but the actor also made appearances on spinoff Good Trouble. Additionally, Saum has had recurring roles on Roswell, New Mexico and Limetown, as well as the Netflix supernatural drama based on Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez.

Executive produced by series creator and showrunner Kemp through her company End of Episode, and Curtis '50 Cent' Jackson through his G-Unit Film and Television, Ghost also stars Power alum Shane Johnson once again as federal prosecutor Cooper Saxe.

Besides Ghost, fellow Power spinoffs in the works for Starz include Power Book III: Raising Kanan and the Empire State politics of Power Book IV: Influence. There is also Power Book V: Force, which sees mothership show vet Tommy Egan (Joseph Sikora) out of the Big Apple and now up to no good in the City of Angels.

Sherri Saum is repped by A3 Artists Agency and manager Warren Binder.

{blackbabes} ‘The Walking Dead’ Adds Margot Bingham To Season 11 Cast; Actress Had Played Mysterious Stephanie On AMC Series

She's Gotta Have It Netflix series actress Margot Bingham has joined season 11 of AMC's The Walking Dead.

While the network nor sources won't comment on who Bingham will play, odds are that we'll finally see Bingham as Stephanie, a character she's done the voiceover for in the season 10 episodes "Bonds" and "Morning Star". Stephanie is an enigmatic survivor of the zombie outbreak in Charleston, West Virginia, who connects via radio with Josh McDermitt's Eugene Porter.

When Deadline's Dominic Patten spoke with Walking Dead showrunner Angela Kang for the last episode that aired on April 5, she indicated that the series will go from being set in its usual rural backdrop to more urban environments. The series was unable to air the season 10 finale due to complications of COVID-19, but managed to finish post-production with an air date during Q4.

Bingham plays the series regular role of Clorinda Bradford on Spike Lee's She's Gotta Have It. The Pittsburgh, PA native also stars in the recurring role of Evie on the NBC medical drama New Amsterdam and recurred on CBS All Access' One Dollar and on HBO's Boardwalk Empire. Her feature credits include Alan Yang's Tigertail, Barbershop: The Next Cut, and the Tribeca Film Festival feature Saturday Church. She is repped by UTA and Industry Entertainment.

In the last episode of Walking Dead, we saw a trio of Survivors venture into an empty Pittsburgh with the Princess character from the Robert Kirkman-created comics making her unique debut. Also, in the wake of Judith coming to terms with losing both her father Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) and Michonne over the past two seasons, Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) tried to find a new role for himself with the daughter of Whisperers leader Alpha, who he killed in March 15's "Walk with Us" episode.

AMC's Walking Dead will be part of the Comic-Con@Home virtual panel lineup this Friday at 1PM.

{blackbabes} ‘Grown-ish’ Star Yara Shahidi Inks Overall Deal With ABC Studios, Launches Production Company

Yara Shahidi

Grown-ish star Yara Shahidi is expanding her relationship with ABC Studios. Shahidi and her business partner and mother, Keri Shahidi, have signed an exclusive overall deal with the studio behind the hit series to develop and produce scripted and alternative television projects for cable, streaming and broadcast via their newly launched production company 7th Sun. The company will be based at ABC Studios, a part of Disney Television Studios.

"I'm thrilled to be partnering with my home family, ABC Studios, in this exciting next chapter, alongside my family," said Shahidi. "It's exciting to add our production company to the roster of my peers and mentors who are also actively committed to sharing meaningful stories."

Keri-Shahidi

Inspired to continue elevating underrepresented voices, 7th Sun's mission is "to pursue projects that touch upon themes of history, heritage, culture, and joy." The Shahidis have brought on veteran executive Lajoie St. George to lead development for 7th Sun. St. George brings over 10 years of experience from NBC International, and an equivalent passion to champion accurate and reflective media.

"We can't wait to extend and expand our relationship with the incredibly talented Yara Shahidi, who has been a member of the family since black-ish," said ABC Studios President Jonnie Davis. "When she's not studying at Harvard and starring in our series 'grown-ish,' she's mentoring and inspiring other young people, which makes us all feel like underachievers but also very proud that she's part of our Studio."

Shahidi became known for her starring role as the oldest daughter Zoey Johnson on the Kenya Barris-created black-ish on ABC and Freeform spinoff grown-ish, which is ranked as the No.1 live action cable comedy series of the 2019-2020 TV season among African American Adults 18-34. Under the guidance of Barris, who also created mixed-ish, Shahidi became the youngest producer on the network.

"Yara is a force," said Barris. "She is insanely talented, unreasonably smart and hardworking beyond compare," said Kenya Barris. "I've called her 'McMogul' for years and seeing all that she has accomplished should come as no surprise to anyone that knows her. This deal is just the beginning for Yara, and I'm excited to see where she takes this next chapter and the storyteller she becomes."

The Shahidis are repped by CAA, Principal Entertainment and attorney Ryan Nord.

{blackbabes} Serena Williams set to play inaugural Kentucky tournament

Los Angeles (AFP) - Serena Williams will make her return to the WTA tour at a new hardcourt tournament in Kentucky in August, organizers said Thursday.

The Top Seed Open said 23-time Grand Slam champion Williams and 2017 US Open winner Sloane Stephens will be in the field when play begins on August 10.

Williams hasn't played since representing the United States in the Fed Cup in February, before the WTA tour along with most of global sport shut down amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Both the WTA tour and the men's ATP tour are scheduled to resume in August.

Williams has already said she plans to enter the next scheduled Grand Slam tournament, the US Open, which is slated to begin in New York on August 31.

The Kentucky tournament was one of two new events confirmed by WTA chief executive Steve Simon last week as additions to the tour's revamped calendar.

WTA action is scheduled to resume with the Palermo Open in Italy starting on August 3.

{blackbabes} Serena Williams’ new jewelry line supports black business owners

Serena Williams is giving back in style.

The tennis pro recently released the new Unstoppable collection from her namesake jewelry line, comprised of two pieces — a necklace and a bracelet — each featuring a single sterling silver circle studded with a tiny diamond and priced at $100.

In an Instagram post, Williams shared that the collection "represents serenity and unity, and is a reminder that your optimism and strength are unstoppable." She also told People that the circular design was inspired by a similar pendant she sported during her historic winning streak in 2015.

"I wore a circular necklace the last time I won all four Grand Slams in a row," Williams said. "I had won four in a row wearing that necklace. I was just really unstoppable."

And from now until August 5, Serena Williams Jewelry is donating 100 percent of proceeds from both pieces to the Opportunity Fund's Small Business Relief Fund to directly support black small business owners impacted by the coronavirus pandemic. A percentage of purchases of other core collection pieces will go to the organization as well.

"3.3 million — 10 percent — of the nation's small businesses went out of business forever between February and April," Luz Urrutia, CEO of the Opportunity Fund, said in a press release. "But black-owned businesses bore the brunt of the pain; with more than 40 percent of black-owned businesses closing down permanently due to the financial crisis precipitated by COVID-19."

Continued Urrutia, "We have to decide what we want our Main Streets to look like when this is over. And we must act decisively. We have an opportunity here to build back something better than we had before by accelerating investments in black entrepreneurs."

{blackbabes} The Bold Type's Aisha Dee Takes Aim at Representation on Freeform Series, Calls Kat/Eva Story 'Out of Character'

Aisha Dee The Bold Type

Like her character on The Bold Type, star Aisha Dee is speaking out — in particular, about racial representation on the Freeform drama in which she plays the fiercely outspoken and passionate Kat Edison.

In a lengthy Instagram post on Wednesday evening, Dee noted that "it took two seasons to get a single [Black, Indigenous or Person of Color] in the writers' room for The Bold Type. And even then, the responsibility to speak for the entire Black experience cannot and should not fall on one person. We got to tell a story about a queer Black woman and a lesbian Muslim woman falling in love, but there have never been any queer Black or Muslim writers in the room." (A source close to the show tells TVLine that there have been queer women of color on the writing staff, including a lesbian woman of color in Season 2 and a bisexual woman of color in Season 3. Additionally, in Season 4, the writers' room consisted of three writers who identify as LGBTQ+ and five who are POC, while eight out of the 10 writers are female.) Dee added that only one Black woman has directed two of the show's 48 episodes, and that there has never been a Black female department head on the set. "It took three seasons to get someone in the hair department who knew how to work with textured hair," Dee continued. "This was impactful on so many levels, and I'm grateful for the women who showed me how to embrace and love my hair in a way I never had before. I want to make sure that no one else ever has to walk onto a set and feel as though their hair is a burden. It is not."

The Bold Type

Dee also took aim at Kat's storyline during the current fourth season, which has seen her sparring and flirting with a Republican lesbian. "The decision to have Kat enter into a relationship with a privileged conservative woman felt confusing and out of character," Dee shared. "Despite my personal feelings about the choice, I tried my best to tell the story with honesty, even though the Kat I know and love would never make these choices. It was heartbreaking to watch Kat's story turn into a redemption story for someone else, someone who is complicit in the oppression of so many. Someone [whose] politics are actively harmful to her communities."

Moving forward, the actress is "ready to take a cue from my girl Kat," Dee wrote. "What would Kat do? She would take a stand and advocate for herself and all other marginalized voices to influence change. I am ready to push harder and speak louder for what matters to me: The diversity we see in front of the camera needs to be reflected in the diversity of the creative team behind the camera."

To that end, "over the last few weeks, I've had conversations with the writers and producers, as well as the executives at Freeform and Universal TV," Dee concluded. "I'm hopeful we will have the opportunity to tell more authentic stories by hiring, promoting, and listening to diverse voices across the entire production of The Bold Type and beyond. This is an opportunity to walk the walk, to really practice the things The Bold Type teaches, by acknowledging mistakes and making commitments to be better in the future. … By speaking out, I'm taking a risk. It's scary, but it's worth it. This is not judgment. This is a call to action. We deserve to see stories that are for us, by us."

In a joint statement, the producers of The Bold Type, Freeform and Universal Television said, "We applaud Aisha for raising her hand and starting conversations around these important issues. We look forward to continuing that dialogue and enacting positive change. Our goal on The Bold Type is and has always been to tell entertaining, authentic stories that are representative of the world that Kat, Jane and Sutton live in — we can only do that if we listen."

Meanwhile, The Bold Type's Season 4 finale is slated to air this Thursday at 10/9c.
