{blackbabes} ‘Utopia’: Ashleigh LaThrop, Desmin Borges, Farrah Mackenzie & Christopher Denham Join Amazon Drama Series

Ashleigh LaThrop (Sirens), Desmin Borges (You're the Worst), Farrah Mackenzie (Ascension) and Christopher Denham (Billions) have joined the cast of Utopia, Amazon's straight-to-series adaptation of the British drama, written by Gone Girl author and screenwriter Gillian Flynn.

Utopia follows a group of young adults who meet online that are mercilessly hunted by a shadowy deep state organization after they come into possession of a near-mythical cult underground graphic novel. Within the comic's pages, they discover the conspiracy theories that may actually be real and are forced into the dangerous, unique and ironic position of saving the world.

LaThrop will play Becky. Bright and big-hearted, she uses her kindness and empathy as a way to get closer to the graphic novel she desperately needs to save her life. Borges is Wilson Wilson, a brilliant, paranoid and eccentric conspiracy theorist who is obsessed with Utopia and convinced that it hides more dark secrets about the very future of our world.

Mackenzie plays Alice, an adopted foster child who is bright and curious, with a steely resolve when challenged and thrown into the dangerous world of our Nerds. Denham is Arby, a shark-like menace who's emotionally stunted and socially disconnected but whose cold facade starts crumbling as he learns some dangerous truths about his childhood.

Sasha Lane, Rainn Wilson, Dan Byrd and Cory Michael Smith also star in Utopia, a co-production between Endemol Shine North America/Kudos and Amazon Studios. Executive producing alongside Flynn are Jessica Rhoades, Kelly, Kudos' Karen Wilson and Diederick Santer as well as Sharon Hall. Sharon Levy, President, Unscripted & Scripted Television, Endemol Shine North America, oversees production for Endemol Shine.

Denham's TV credits include One Dollar and recurring on Billions, and he has appeared is such films as Money Monster, Shutter Island, Duplicity and Charlie Wilson's War.

{blackbabes} Spirit Awards: ‘If Beale Street Could Talk’ Wins Big; ‘Sorry To Bother You’, ‘Eighth Grade’ Honored – Full Winners List

Trophies were handed out at the 34th edition of the Film Independent Spirit Awards with Barry Jenkins's adaptation of James Baldwin's If Beale Street Could Talk walking away with the most trophies including Best Feature, Best Director for Jenkins and Best Supporting Female for Regina King.

Of the three awards for Beale Street, it seems that King's win further strengthens her chances of winning Oscar gold on Sunday considering Jenkins was snubbed for Best Director and the film didn't make the Best Picture cut. However, the wins might work in its favor for the film's Best Adapted Screenplay category.

Other big honorees of the evening included Boots Riley winning Best First Feature for his surreal comedy of class and race Sorry To Bother You and Glenn Close (who took her dog Pip as her date) taking home the trophy for Female Lead for her role in The Wife, continuing her winning streak by. Ethan Hawke's performance in First Reformed earned him Best Male Lead while Richard E. Grant walked away with the trophy for Best Supporting Male.

The John Cassavetes Award, which is presented to the creative team of a film budgeted at less than $500,000 by Film Independent, was awarded to En El Septimo Dia. Now in its second year, the Bonnie Award, which recognizes mid-career women directors, was given to Leave No Trace's Debra Granik.

Morgan Neville's Oscar-snubbed Mr. Rogers doc Won't You Be My Neighbor found vindication with a Best Documentary win while Nicole Holofcener & Jeff Whitty put themselves in a good position for a possible Oscar win when they won for Best Screenplay for Can You Ever Forgive Me?

Filled with quick quips, an enjoyable witch-themed sketch and some irreverent jabs at the industry, the ceremony moved at a brisk pace with the help of host Aubrey Plaza. It was a nice amuse bouche to tomorrow's Academy Awards ceremony.

{blackbabes} ‘Prodigal Son’: Lou Diamond Phillips, Aurora Perrineau & Frank Harts To Co-Star In Fox Drama Pilot

Lou Diamond Phillips, Aurora Perrineau and Frank Harts have been cast as series regulars in Prodigal Son, Fox's police drama pilot, from Deception creator Chris Fedak and Sam Sklaver, Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros TV. In addition, Lee Toland Krieger (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina) is set to direct the pilot and executive produce.

Written by Fedak and Sklaver, Prodigal Son is described as a fresh take on a crime franchise with a provocative and outrageous lead character and darkly comedic tone. It centers on Malcolm Bright, who has a gift. He knows how killers think, how their minds work. Why? His father was one of the worst — a notorious serial killer called "The Surgeon." That's why Bright is the best criminal psychologist around; murder is the family business. He will use his twisted genius to help the NYPD solve crimes and stop killers, all while dealing with a manipulative mother, annoyingly normal sister, a homicidal father still looking to bond with his prodigal son, and his own constantly evolving neuroses.

Phillips will play Gil, a recent widower who is a little old school, Gil is a tough, experienced NYPD detective who brings Bright onto his team to help find a copycat killer. Gil is confident about Bright's abilities, and they have a pseudo father/son relationship.

Perrineau portrays Dani. Headstrong, courageous and experienced, Dani is a Bronx-born NYPD detective and former addict who works with JT and Gil. Although Dani is initially suspicious of Bright's presence on their team, she grows impressed with his work and develops a soft spot for him.

Harts will play JT, an NYPD detective who works with Gil and Dani. He is baffled by Bright's eccentricities as a forensic profiler, and he wonders if Bright is a psychopath himself. Growing up, his friends were more like future criminals than future cops.

Fedak and Sklaver executive produce with Krieger, Berlanti Prods' Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter. Warner Bros TV produces with studio-based Berlanti Prods.

Phillips will next be seen on the big screen alongside Mickey Rourke in indie Adverse. His recent TV credits include recurring roles on Blue Bloods, Goliath and NCIS: New Orleans. He's repped by Global Artists Agency and Thruline.

Perrineau plays Ashley Prime on Hulu's Into the Dark and will next be seen in Ava DuVernay-directed Netflix limited series Central Park Five. She's repped by CAA, Silver Lining Entertainment and Stone, Genow, Smelkinson, Binder & Christopher.

Harts' TV credits include recurring roles on The Path, Billions and The Leftovers. He's repped by Artists & Representatives and Davien Littlefield Management.

{blackbabes} Regina Hall, Amandla Stenberg, Kiki Layne & Jenifer Lewis Feted At Essence’s Black Women In Hollywood Awards

The Beverly Wilshire Hotel was exploding with Black excellence during Essence's 12th annual Black Women In Hollywood Awards. The ballroom was packed with A-list Hollywood players like Regina King, Angela Bassett, Octavia Spencer, and Ava DuVernay, who came out to celebrate the contributions and achievements of some of Hollywood's leading female artists.

This year's honorees were The Hate U Give stars Amandla Stenberg and Regina Hall, as well as with If Beale Street Could Take standout Kiki Layne and veteran actress Jenifer Lewis (Black-ish), who all offered up words of enlightenment, encouragement, and empowerment.

"Sometimes it may feel like we carry a lot of weight but it is because we have been given roots that run deep into the earth," wax poetic Stenberg, who was the first to receive Essense award at the pre-Oscars luncheon. "We are gifted with a knowingness that often doesn't need words. A love and protection of our ancestors envelops us and transcends time itself. No matter what we are faced we are wrapped in that protection… we are part of the richest tapestry, one that houses the energy of the past, the present, and the future."

Not a dry eye was left after an emotional Layne got on stage to accept her award. The rising star made sure to acknowledge those come before her and broke barriers. "This award, in addition to showing me whose already around me, it also reminds me of who has come before and all of the people who had sacrificed so that I could be here, days away from my first Academy awards ceremony representing a James Baldwin adaptation," she said. "I'm so thankful that I am being shown all of these things and being made aware of this power at this point in my career where it's just getting started."

Coming off of a year that saw her make history as the first Black woman to win best actress at the New York Film Critics Circle awards, Hall, who after some funny quips, reflected on her career journey. "I never had a quantum leap that was overnight but there's so much you learn in the journey. So I'm grateful for that."

She added, "as I celebrate this, I want to celebrate every woman in this room who — and man, shit y'all are here — who at whatever part of the journey that you're in because it's a never-ending journey…but it's not really about that. It's about what we show each other. It's about the love we give to each other. It's about the empowerment that we feel as people."

Lewis took the stage to cap off the afternoon, opening up about her early days of dealing with mental illness, depression, and being a victim of sexual assault, and sex addiction. With that said, the self-proclaimed "mother of Black Hollywood" beamed with pride as she celebrated the woman that she is now. "I am now, as you can plainly see, In my skin. I'm happy, free, rich, famous. I'm so amazing I can't see straight."

She went to describe how she had "touched bliss" when she took responsibility for own actions, concluding her speech with, "stop pointing the fingers at others and that includes this administration. You take of what's right in front of you and make a difference in this world."

Singer/actress Kelly Rowland hosted the event which was also attended by Spike Lee, Tina Knowles, Diddy, Maxine Waters, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Tarana Burke, Lorraine Toussaint, Ryan Michelle Bathe, Meagan Good, Logan Browning, Loretta Devine, DeWanda Wise, MACRO's Charles D. King, Shangela, and Angela Rye.

{blackbabes} Tamar Braxton Lands Dream Role On ‘The Bold & The Beautiful’ After ‘Celebrity Big Brother’ Win

She brought drama to the Celebrity Big Brother house, so now she's going to lend some hyper-emotion to The Bold and the Beautiful!

EW has learned exclusively that Tamar Braxton — who won the second installment of Celebrity Big Brother — will continue with tradition by appearing on the CBS sudser. Braxton will portray Chef Chambre in a scene with actors Don Diamont (Bill Spencer) and Heather Tom (Katie Logan), who are set up on a private dinner date by an anonymous cupid.

Even though it's customary for BB winners to do stints on B&B, this gig is particularly special to Braxton. As a huge fan of the CBS soap, Braxton named her child Logan after Brooke Logan, the character originally played by Katherine Kelly Lang. That's devotion.

Braxton will tape her episode of B&B on Feb. 20. It will air on March 28.

On Feb. 13, Braxton became only the second person to ever win a U.S. Big Brother season unanimously (after season 10's Dan Gheesling). She beat out runner-up Ricky Williams.

"I can't even really put it into words," the reality TV personality told EW of her win. "It's like the best day on top of the best feeling. I've been watching this show since Chicken George. And I can't believe that I was actually blessed to be a part of it, let alone win. Like, that is crazy to me."

The Bold and the Beautiful airs weekdays on CBS.

{blackbabes} Oscars Set Diverse Group To Intro Best Picture Noms During Ceremony

Producers of the 91st Oscars said Wednesday that chef José Andrés, Dana Carvey, Queen Latifah, Rep. John Lewis, Diego Luna, Tom Morello, Mike Myers, Trevor Noah, Amandla Stenberg, Barbra Streisand and Serena Williams have been set to introduce the eight Best Picture nominees during the ceremony Sunday.

"Movies connect us all," said producer Donna Gigliotti and producer-director Glenn Weiss. "They move us, and they create moments and memories that unite us. We are thrilled to assemble this well-known array of film lovers to introduce and share their reflections on the Best Picture-nominated movies."

It's the latest glimpse of an Oscar show that has been beset by challenges all season long, from a short-lived stab at a Most Popular Film award; to Kevin Hart at host, then not; to eliminating song performances, then not; to an ill-fated attempt to shorten the show by awarding some categories off air. The Academy has been pushing out its final plans in drips and drabs, including three rounds of presenters and that Queen will be part of the show. Other elements we know include Bette Midler coming on to sing Original Song nominee "The Place Where Lost Things Go," from Mary Poppins Returns.

The presenter list: Elsie Fisher, Danai Gurira, Brian Tyree Henry, Michael B. Jordan, Michael Keaton, Helen Mirren, John Mulaney, Tyler Perry, Pharrell Williams, Krysten Ritter, Paul Rudd, Michelle Yeoh, Javier Bardem, Angela Bassett, Chadwick Boseman, Emilia Clarke, Laura Dern, Samuel L. Jackson, Stephan James, Keegan-Michael Key, KiKi Layne, James McAvoy, Melissa McCarthy, Jason Momoa, Sarah Paulson, Awkwafina, Daniel Craig, Chris Evans, Tina Fey, Allison Janney, Brie Larson, Jennifer Lopez, Frances McDormand, Gary Oldman, Amy Poehler, Sam Rockwell, Maya Rudolph, Charlize Theron, Tessa Thompson and Constance Wu.

The Oscars are Sunday at 8 PM ET/5 PM PT live on ABC.

Starz is rounding out it series regular cast for upcoming drama P-Valley (working title). Carolyn Braver (The Iceman Cometh), Parker Sawyers (Pine Gap), Elarica Johnson (Blade Runner 2049) and Harriett D. Foy (Law & Order: SVU) have been cast opposite Brandee Evans and Nicco Annan in Katori Hall's strip club drama based on her play Pussy Valley. Peter Chernin executive produces.

Created by Hall, who also showruns, the drama is set down deep in the Mississippi Delta, where lies an oasis of grit and glitter in a rough patch of human existence where beauty can be hard to find. The Southern-fried hourlong drama tells the kaleidoscopic story of a little-strip-club-that-could and the big characters who come through its doors: the hopeful, the lost, the broken, the ballers, the beautiful, and the damned. Trap music meets film noir in this lyrical and atmospheric series that dares to ask what happens when small-town folk dream beyond the boundaries of the Piggly Wiggly and the pawn shop. Braver plays Gidget, a quirky and earnest trailer-park philosopher. She's a second-generation pole dancer and the ultimate ride-or-die best friend who views stripping as an Olympic-worthy sport — high art, even.

Sawyers will play Andre Watkins, a former son of this gritty Delta town who's managed to transform himself into a well-educated, upper-middle-class high-achiever. Back home on mysterious business, he finds himself ensnared by a mystery woman and the ties that bind his struggling community.

Johnson is Autumn Night: "The Foreign", a perfectly polished beauty with a dark secret tucked deep in her Louis Vuitton bag. This bad and bougie femme fatale washes up on the shores of the club under murky circumstances. A walking wound in need of connection and care, she's got no time to depend on the kindness of strangers—she's depending on her damn self in the dangerous landscape of the Delta.

Foy portrays Patrice Woodbine, a gospel singing pimpstress and the muva of our shero, Mercedes. She's a larger than life, wanna-be preacher who can squeeze an offering from a stone and have an entire congregation speaking in tongues.

In addition to Evans and Annan, they join previously announced series regulars Shannon Thornton and J. Alphonse Nicholson.

Hall executive produces with Dante Di Loreto (American Horror Story) and Chernin Entertainment. Khaliah Neal (3½ Minutes 10 Bullet) will serve as consulting producer and Patrik-Ian Polk (Being Mary Jane) is co-executive producer. Award-winning music video director Karena Evans (Drake: Nice for What) will direct the premiere episode.

Sawyers was most recently seen in a starring role on Australian series Pine Gap, which was released on Netflix. His other credits include his portrayal of a young Barack Obama in feature Southside With You and he'll next be seen in World on Fire, an upcoming series for BBC One. He's repped by CAA, 42 Management in the UK and Stone, Meyer, Genow, Smelkinson & Binder, LLP.

With a background in theater, Braver is a relative newcomer to television having previously guest starred on Mercy Street (PBS) and Chicago Fire (NBC). This marks her first series lead. In addition to The Iceman Cometh opposite Denzel Washington, Braver starred in Airline Highway on Broadway. She is repped by APA and Foundation Talent Management.

Johnson's recent credits include Blade Runner 2049, Agatha Raisin and A Discovery of Witches. She's repped by Piers Nimmo in the UK and Magnolia Entertainment in the U.S.

Foy most recently appeared in Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, feature Collateral Beauty, and a guest role in Orange is the New Black. She's repped by BRS/Gage Agency.

{blackbabes} Tennis player Djokovic, gymnast Biles win top Laureus awards

MONACO (Reuters) - World number one tennis player Novak Djokovic crowned a winning return to the courts after surgery with the Laureus sportsman of the year award on Monday, while American gymnast Simone Biles won the sportswoman of the year prize.

Serbian Djokovic, who 12 months ago had elbow surgery, won Wimbledon and the U.S. Open in 2018, before lifting this year's Australian Open crown, to add to his tally of Grand Slam singles titles and reclaim top spot in the rankings.

With his record seventh crown at Melbourne Park, Djokovic moved ahead of Pete Sampras into third on the men's all-time list of Grand Slam title winners (15), just two behind Rafa Nadal. Roger Federer is still out in front with 20.

"I did think about leaving tennis," Djokovic said on Monday. "I did not find myself in a good balance. It took me several months to find that purpose and meaning again. This award reflects and symbolizes this journey.

"Reflecting on the journey it seems like a fairytale story."

Multiple Olympic champion Biles in November became the all-time leading world gymnastics championship gold medal winner with a record 14 golds.

With 20 overall medals at the worlds, Biles, who has also won four Olympic golds, tied Russia's Svetlana Khorkina for the most by a female gymnast in world championships competition. Her all-around world title was her fourth, also a record.

The comeback of the year award was handed to U.S. golfer Tiger Woods, who silenced even his harshest critics when he earned what some consider to be one of the greatest victories of his career at last year's Tour Championship season finale.

Woods, who collected the last of his 14 majors at the 2008 U.S. Open, has had plenty of health-related setbacks, having to endure several knee and back surgeries, and his career seemed to be nearing its end in 2017.

Japan's world number one women's tennis player Naomi Osaka, who lifted her first Grand Slam title at the U.S. Open last year, and went on to claim the 2019 Australian Open, won the breakthrough of the year award.

{blackbabes} With ‘Help’ From Octavia Spencer & Tate Taylor, Gabrielle Union To Star In And Produce ‘Coffee Will Make You Black’

Gabrielle Union Coffee Will Make You Black

Gabrielle Union will star in and produce through her I'll Have Another production banner an adaptation of the April Sinclair novel Coffee Will Make You Black. Octavia Spencer will produce the film through her Orit banner with Union and Wyolah Films' Tate Taylor and John Norris. The film was scripted and will be directed by Deborah Riley Draper, whose credits include Versailles '73 and Olympic Pride, American Prejudice.

Union starred in and produced last year's box office hit Breaking In and is currently filming her Bad Boys TV spin-off LA's Finest, on which she is an exec producer.

Coffee Will Make You Black follows a smart, funny and naive African American teenage girl finding her voice as she navigates conflicting relationships with her mother, her best friends, and her crushes amid racism, sexism and color-ism in 1960s Chicago.

Said Spencer, whose last collaboration with Taylor brought her the Oscar for The Help: "There are so many unheard stories and voices in the African American community that speak to universal themes and the humanity in all of us. I wanted to use my platform to create more opportunities for directors and writers of color to tell these stories. This project has women of color in lead roles in front of and behind the camera."

Said Taylor: "Deborah's voice is original, powerful and exactly the kind of character-driven storytelling that compels me to be a writer and a director." Taylor is in post-production on the upcoming Blumhouse thriller Ma, which stars Spencer, and the action thriller Eve, which stars The Help's Jessica Chastain.

Said Union: "A smart, funny, poignant coming-of-age film with a young black female protagonist is important to see. And it is equally important to see the complicated relationship between a black mother and her daughter as they try to succeed and assimilate in a change-resistant America."

Spencer, Taylor and Norris previously worked together on three films. This marks the first collaboration between their companies, Wyolah Films and Orit Productions.

Union is repped by CAA and Atlas Artists, Draper is Sharp & Associates. Spencer is WME and Jackoway Austen Tyerman.

{blackbabes} More Big Names – Cuarón, Clooney, McDormand Among Them – Sign Open Letter To Academy In Category Controversy

UPDATED, 10:05 AM Thursday with more names added to open letter: The list of industry names who have signed on to an open letter to the Academy asking it to reverse its decision to change the way some categories are presented at the Oscars is growing.

Roma's Alfonso Cuarón, George Clooney, Brad Pitt and Kerry Washington are among the latest signatories on the letter, which now includes support from Oscar winners including Alejandro G. Iñárritu, Guillermo del Toro and Frances McDormand (see the latest list of names below).

The letter was published Thursday (read it here) and prompted a quick response from the Academy and its president John Bailey, who insisted the plan to award four trophies — for Cinematography, Editing, Makeup & Hair Styling and Live Action Shorts — in an effort to streamline the broadcast has been misconstrued since it was officially announced Monday.

UPDATED, 7:13 PM Wednesday with Academy's response: Shortly after nearly 100 high-profile cinematographers and directors including Quentin Tarantino, Spike Lee and Martin Scorsese sent an open letter to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences expressing reservations about the decision to move four awards to commercial breaks, the Academy released a statement addressing their concerns.

"As the Academy's officers, we'd like to assure you that no award category at the 91st Oscars ceremony will be presented in a manner that depicts the achievements of its nominees and winners as less than any others," said the Academy statement released Wednesday night. "Unfortunately, as the result of inaccurate reporting and social media posts, there has been a chain of misinformation that has understandably upset many Academy members. We'd like to restate and explain the plans for presenting the awards, as endorsed by the Academy's Board of Governors."

The letter, signed by top AMPAS brass, went on to lay out a series of explanations, with the Academy saying, "We'd like to restate and explain the plans for presenting the awards, as endorsed by the Academy's Board of Governors."

· All 24 Award categories are presented on stage in the Dolby Theatre, and included in the broadcast.

· Four categories – Cinematography, Film Editing, Makeup and Hairstyling, and Live Action Short – were volunteered by their branches to have their nominees and winners announced by presenters, and included later in the broadcast. Time spent walking to the stage and off, will be edited out.

· The four winning speeches will be included in the broadcast.

· In future years, four to six different categories may be selected for rotation, in collaboration with the show producers. This year's categories will be exempted in 2020.

· This change in the show was discussed and agreed to by the Board of Governors in August, with the full support of the branch executive committees. Such decisions are fully deliberated.

Our show producers have given great consideration to both Oscar tradition and our broad global audience.

We sincerely believe you will be pleased with the show, and look forward to celebrating a great year in movies with all Academy members and with the rest of the world.

On Monday, the Academy announced that the winners in the best cinematography, best editing, best hair & makeup, and best live action short would be announced during commercial breaks. The American Society of Cinematographers weighed in the next day, with its president Kees van Oostrum saying, "After receiving many comments on this matter from ASC members, I think I speak for many of them in declaring this a most unfortunate decision."

In an open letter obtained by Deadline on Wednesday, about 40 industry insiders urged the Academy to rethink the decision in an open letter to AMPAS president John Bailey.

"Since its inception, the Academy Awards telecast has been altered over time to keep the format fresh, but never by sacrificing the integrity of the Academy's original mission," the letter said. "When the recognition of those responsible for the creation of outstanding cinema is being diminished by the very institution whose purpose it is to protect it, then we are no longer upholding the spirit of the Academy's promise to celebrate film as a collaborative art form."

Here is the filmmakers' open letter in its entirety:

An Open Letter to The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences and The Producers of the 91st Annual Academy Awards Broadcast:

On Monday, February 11, 2019, John Bailey, President of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, announced that this year's Oscar presentations for Best Cinematography — along with Film Editing, Live Action Short and Makeup and Hairstyling — will not be broadcast live, but rather presented during a commercial break. This decision was made to reduce the length of the show from four hours to three. The vocal response from our peers and the immediate backlash from industry leaders over the Academy's decision makes it clear that it's not too late to have this decision reversed.

The Academy was founded in 1927 to recognize and uphold excellence in the cinematic arts, inspire imagination and help connect the world through the universal medium of motion pictures. Unfortunately, we have drifted from this mission in our pursuit of presenting entertainment rather than in presenting a celebration of our art form and the people behind it.

Relegating these essential cinematic crafts to lesser status in this 91 st Academy Awards ceremony is nothing less than an insult to those of us who have devoted our lives and passions to our chosen profession.

The show's director, Glenn Weiss, has stated that he will determine what "emotionally resonant" moments from the four winners' speeches will be selected to air later in the broadcast. The show will cut any additional comment from presenters, as well as any recitation of the nominees as they see fit.

Since its inception, the Academy Awards telecast has been altered over time to keep the format fresh, but never by sacrificing the integrity of the Academy's original mission. When the recognition of those responsible for the creation of outstanding cinema is being diminished by the very institution whose purpose it is to protect it, then we are no longer upholding the spirit of the Academy's promise to celebrate film as a collaborative art form. To quote our colleague Seth Rogan, "What better way to celebrate achievements in film than to NOT publicly honor the people whose job it is to literally film things."
