{blackbabes} Rashida Jones to reboot '9 To 5'

Rashida Jones has been recruited to revamp 1980 comedy classic 9 To 5.

The original film's stars Dolly Parton, Jane Fonda, and Lily Tomlin will be involved with the new project, according to Deadline, while Patricia Resnick, who wrote the original movie, is reportedly in talks to team with Jones and create a new script.

The new film will centre upon three women, who seek out the advice of the movie's original characters on how to get their own back on a sexist boss.

Parton, Fonda, and Tomlin have been eager to reunite on the screen for several years with the country singer hoping to appear on the actresses' Netflix show Grace and Frankie.

"I told them whenever I get a little block of time, I'd love to come be on the show (sic)," Parton previously said. "We always talked about a (9 to 5) reunion."

"We're praying, we're hoping so," Tomlin told talk show The View. "Jane and I are really plugging for it and we've finally convinced the management at Netflix. They're very excited; they're very turned on to it."

{blackbabes} Four billboards outside Indian Wells hail Williams

Los Angeles (AFP) - Serena Williams' husband Alexis Ohanian has splashed out on four giant billboards to mark the tennis star's return to tournament play in California next week.

Ohanian, borrowing a tactic at the centre of Oscar-nominated movie "Three Billboards, Outside Ebbing Missouri", delighted Williams after the giant adverts appeared on the motorway heading to the desert city of Indian Wells.

The first three billboards, which also feature images of the couple's baby daughter, spell out the message, "Greatest Momma Of All Time".

A fourth billboard reads: "Serena Williams - G.M.O.A.T - Alexis Jr + Sr."

In an Instagram post, Ohanian revealed he had designed and paid for the ads himself.

"These just went up alongside I-10 into Palm Springs," Ohanian wrote. "I wanted to welcome her back to tennis. Designed them myself with some help from Jr," he added.

Williams was bowled over by the gesture. "Literally am crying," she wrote in a comment under Ohanian's Instagram post. "This is so sweet. I love you."

Williams, 36, has not played a full WTA tournament since missing most of 2017 due to the birth of her daughter.

The 23-time Grand Slam champion played in a Fed Cup game for the United States earlier this month and will return at next week's BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells.

{blackbabes} Stacey Dash, ‘Clueless’ Actress And One-Time Oscar Punchline, Running For Congress

Clueless star/former Fox News commentator Stacey Dash has made it official: she's running for Congress in California.

The actress on Monday filed docs to run in California's 44th district, which encompasses Compton, Watts, San Pedro and North Long Beach; it has been a Dem stronghold for years; these days repped by Nanette Barragán. It's a district that overwhelmingly voted for Hillary Clinton in 2016; Dash is Republican.

Earlier this month, Dash hinted the move was in the works:

A Donald Trump endorsement cannot be far behind.

In January of 2016, when Dash weighed in on Fox & Friends about the lack of diversity in that year's Oscar nominations, her remarks drew praise from then-candidate Trump.

"We have to make up our minds," she opined. "Either we have segregation or integration. If we don't want segregation, then we need to get rid of channels like BET and the BET Awards and the Image Awards — where you're only awarded if you're black. If it were the other way around, we'd be up in arms." Dash also insisted there "shouldn't be a Black History Month. We're Americans, period. That's it."

Then GOP presidential race frontrunner Trump gave F&F his two cents' worth on the Oscars flap, telling F&F's co-hosts Steve Doocy, Brian Kilmeade, and Anna Kooiman, "I saw somebody on your show today saying, 'Well, what do we do with BET?' The whites don't get any nominations. I thought it was an amazing interview, actually. I'd never even thought about it from that standpoint."

At the 2016 Oscars, host Chris Rock got in on the exchange when he brought Dash on stage at the awards ceremony, saying the Academy had taken steps to fix the lack of opportunity for black actors, and naming Dash director of its minority outreach program.

"I cannot wait to help my people out. Happy Black History Month!" Dash told Oscar-goers then giggled nervously as the audience reacted with silence. "Thank you," she added, then dashed off stage. It was unclear if attendees had any idea who she was, much less the gag.

"I just walked offstage from the Oscars and where I got no applause," she said after her brief appearance. "No boos. Nothing. People were awestruck, which was a little disappointing. But I did it because I wanted to. I stand in my position, and Chris asked me to do it and I love him and I support him. And I also think I should be the head of diversity at the Oscars. I think I'm the perfect person to do that."

Based on the social media strength of that Oscar gig, Dash got cast as the mayor of Chicago in Syfy's Sharknado: The 4th Awakens. By then, Trump was within spitting distance of the White House, so Dash made perfect sense as mayor of a city struggling with racial strife. Things didn't go so well for Mayor Dash; she got crushed by a house, Wicked-Witch style.

In January of '17, when Fox News Channel covered Trump's first full week in the White House, it did so with a culled crop of contributors. Among the departed: George Will and Dash – two names never before used in the same sentence.

{blackbabes} SERENA WILLIAMS NARRATES 1968, THE STORY OF OLYMPIC ACHIEVEMENT AND CULTURAL LEGACY, AIRING SUNDAY, FEB. 25, AT 4:10 P.M. ET ON NBC

PYEONGCHANG, South Korea – February 23, 2018 – Fifty years since the Olympic Games in Mexico City, NBC Olympics will bring viewers back to that tumultuous and politically-charged year with a 90-minute documentary entitled 1968. Four-time Olympic gold medalist and 23-time Grand Slam singles champion Serena Williams narrates the film, which makes its broadcast television debut Sunday, Feb. 25, at 4:10 p.m. ET on NBC.

"The connection between sports and social issues is as urgent and relevant today as it was in 1968," said Jim Bell, President, NBC Olympics Production and Programming. "Those Games took place in a turbulent year, so it is fitting that they are as memorable for the protests as for the performances. The stories of what these athletes endured before, during, and after Mexico City are both inspiring, and heart-breaking. And we are honored to have Serena Williams as our guide for this extraordinary work."

1968 was a transformative year in the U.S. and throughout the world. It was the deadliest year of the Vietnam War. Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy were assassinated. Soviet troops crushed the Prague Spring. Protest movements raged in North America and Europe. In Mexico City, protests turned violent when government troops opened fire on demonstrators just 10 days before the Games.

Amidst that backdrop, the Mexico City Games became a stage for the collision of sport and politics. On the podium for the 200-meter medal ceremony, Tommie Smith and John Carlos raised gloved fists in a statement against racial discrimination. While the iconic image of their silent gesture is universally celebrated half a century later, at the time, Smith and Carlos were dismissed from the team and sent home from Mexico City.

American athletes were not the only ones protesting in Mexico City. 1968 also tells the story of Czechoslovakian gymnast Vera Caslavska, who protested the Soviet invasion of her country by looking away as the Soviet national anthem played during her medal ceremonies. Like Smith and Carlos, Caslavska also faced criticism for speaking out, and struggled for years in the aftermath.

The Mexico City Games were also memorable for thrilling competition and remarkable performances. The U.S. Team topped the medal table, led by the greatest team in track and field history. Dick Fosbury changed the high jump forever with his revolutionary "Fosbury Flop," and Bob Beamon broke the world record in the long jump by nearly two feet.

1968 also features interviews with NBA icon and cultural ambassador Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, who protested the 1968 Games; heavyweight champion George Foreman, who took home a gold medal at the Games; civil rights activist Harry Edwards, who led the Olympic Project for Human Rights; as well as Emmy Award-winning journalist Tom Brokaw.

1968 will also air an NBCSN, Sunday, Feb. 25, as part of a three-hour documentary block beginning at 11:30 a.m. ET. 1968 will be available streaming on NBCSports.com and the NBC Sports app – NBC Sports Group's live streaming platforms for desktops, mobile devices, tablets, and connected TVs.

{blackbabes} ‘Staties’: Annie Ilonzeh Cast As Lead Of ABC Drama Pilot

Annie Ilonzeh (Empire) has been cast as the lead in ABC's drama pilot Staties, from Matt Partney & Corey Evett, Maniac Productions and ABC Studios. She joins previously cast male lead Andy Karl and co-star David Zayas.

Written by Partney and Evett and directed by Rob Bowman, Staties centers on Eliza Cortez (Ilonzeh), a hard-charging NYPD detective who's banished to the boonies after a high-profile mistake and is paired with a new partner, Oregon State Trooper Sam King (Karl), whose investigative techniques don't exactly follow protocol.

The daughter of a criminal, Eliza has got a chip on her shoulder and a lot to prove. Initially with the NYPD in Brooklyn, she's bounced off the force after a one-woman assault on a meth lab leaves a city block in rubble. After getting a job with the Oregon State Police Force — the only squad that would hire her — Eliza is obliged to adjust to an infinitely more easygoing and eccentric team of co-workers.

Michael Seitzman & Christina Davis executive produce via their Maniac Productions alongside Partney, Evett and Bowman.

Ilonze, whose series credits also include Person of Interest and Graceland, is with Etcetera and Company and attorney Michael Auerbach.

{blackbabes} Tiffany Haddish to Star in Netflix Animated Comedy From BoJack Team

Tiffany Haddish Netflix Tuca and Bertie

Girls Trip star Tiffany Haddish is taking a trip to Netflix.

The breakout actress will voice one of the lead characters in Tuca & Bertie, a new animated comedy from the team behind BoJack Horseman, the streaming service announced on Tuesday. She'll play Tuca, a 30-year-old carefree toucan who lives in the same apartment building as her friend Bertie, a neurotic songbird. (The role of Bertie has not yet been cast.)

Tuca & Bertie has already landed a 10-episode straight-to-series order from Netflix. BoJack supervising producer Lisa Hanawalt will pen the pilot; BoJack creator Raphael Bob-Waksburg will serve as an executive producer, along with Hanawalt and Haddish.

Haddish is plenty busy: She's already co-starring as Tracy Morgan's ex in the upcoming TBS comedy The Last O.G. (debuting April 3), and she hosted Saturday Night Live for the first time last November. She also played sister-in-law Nekeisha on NBC's The Carmichael Show, which wrapped up a three-season run last summer.

{blackbabes} Serena Williams: What my life-threatening experience taught me about giving birth

https://www.cnn.com/2018/02/20/opinions/protect-mother-pregnancy-williams-opinion/index.html

(CNN)I almost died after giving birth to my daughter, Olympia.

Yet I consider myself fortunate.
While I had a pretty easy pregnancy, my daughter was born by emergency C-section after her heart rate dropped dramatically during contractions. The surgery went smoothly. Before I knew it, Olympia was in my arms. It was the most amazing feeling I've ever experienced in my life. But what followed just 24 hours after giving birth were six days of uncertainty.

It began with a pulmonary embolism, which is a condition in which one or more arteries in the lungs becomes blocked by a blood clot. Because of my medical history with this problem, I live in fear of this situation. So, when I fell short of breath, I didn't wait a second to alert the nurses.
This sparked a slew of health complications that I am lucky to have survived. First my C-section wound popped open due to the intense coughing I endured as a result of the embolism. I returned to surgery, where the doctors found a large hematoma, a swelling of clotted blood, in my abdomen. And then I returned to the operating room for a procedure that prevents clots from traveling to my lungs. When I finally made it home to my family, I had to spend the first six weeks of motherhood in bed.
I am so grateful I had access to such an incredible medical team of doctors and nurses at a hospital with state-of-the-art equipment. They knew exactly how to handle this complicated turn of events. If it weren't for their professional care, I wouldn't be here today.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, black women in the United States are over three times more likely to die from pregnancy or childbirth-related causes. But this is not just a challenge in the United States. Around the world, thousands of women struggle to give birth in the poorest countries. When they have complications like mine, there are often no drugs, health facilities or doctors to save them. If they don't want to give birth at home, they have to travel great distances at the height of pregnancy. Before they even bring a new life into this world, the cards are already stacked against them.

Here's the reality of one woman, as documented by UNICEF. In Malawi, Mary James walked hours to reach the closest health center while she was in labor. Exhausted, she made it to the facility and gave birth, only to lose her child later that day. She picked a name for him, but he never opened his eyes. He never cried. She kept the name to herself. Sadly, Mary's nameless son was not the only one. That same day, approximately 2,600 babies died on their first day of life.

According to UNICEF, each year, 2.6 million newborns die, tragically before their lives even really get started. Over 80% die from preventable causes. We know simple solutions exist, like access to midwives and functional health facilities, along with breastfeeding, skin-to-skin contact, clean water, basic drugs and good nutrition. Yet we are not doing our part. We are not rising to the challenge to help the women of the world.

Mary's baby died because there weren't enough doctors or nurses to save him. This is a chronic problem plaguing the most impoverished countries. But what if we lived in a world where there were enough birth attendants? Where there was no shortage of access to health facilities nearby? Where lifesaving drugs and clean water were easily available to all? Where midwives could help and advise mothers after birth? What if we lived in a world where every mother and newborn could receive affordable health care and thrive in life?

That world is possible. And we must dare to dream it for every black woman, for every woman in Malawi, and for every mother out there.

Across the globe, organizations like UNICEF are committed to delivering simple solutions on behalf of every mother and newborn. These solutions include recruiting and training more doctors and midwives, guaranteeing clean and functional health facilities, making the top 10 lifesaving drugs and equipment available, and most importantly, empowering adolescent girls to demand quality care.
Every mother, everywhere, regardless of race or background deserves to have a healthy pregnancy and birth. And you can help make this a reality.

How? You can demand governments, businesses and health care providers do more to save these precious lives. You can donate to UNICEF and other organizations around the world working to make a difference for mothers and babies in need. In doing so, you become part of this narrative -- making sure that one day, who you are or where you are from does not decide whether your baby gets to live or to die.

Together, we can make this change. Together, we can be the change.
