{blackbabes} ‘Yellowjackets’: Tawny Cypress & Jasmin Savoy Brown Join Showtime Drama Pilot

Tawny-Cypress-Jasmin-Savoy-Brown

Tawny Cypress (Unforgettable) and Jasmin Savoy Brown (The Leftovers) have been cast as series regulars in Showtime's drama pilot Yellowjackets, from writers Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson (Narcos), Entertainment One and studio-based producer Drew Comins. The pilot, co-produced by eOne and Showtime, goes into production in Los Angeles this fall.

Written by Lyle and Nickerson, Yellowjackets is equal parts survival epic, horror story and coming-of-age drama and relates the narrative of a team of wildly talented high school girls soccer players who become the (un)lucky survivors of a plane crash deep in the Ontario wilderness. The series chronicles their descent from a complicated but thriving team to warring, cannibalistic clans, while also tracking the lives they've attempted to piece back together nearly 25 years later, proving that the past is never really past and what began out in the wilderness is far from over.

Cypress and Brown will play the adult and teen versions of Taissa. In her youth, Taissa was the star player on the Yellowjackets squad; now, 25 years later, her political ambitions threaten to derail the survivors' pact of secrecy.

Melanie Lynskey (I Don't Feel at Home in This World Anymore) will play Shauna Sheridan.

Karyn Kusama (Destroyer) will executive produce and direct the pilot. Lyle, Nickerson and Kusama executive produce with Drew Comins of Creative Engine.

Cypress has appeared in such film and television projects as The Blacklist and The Blacklist: Redemption, Supergirl, House of Cards, Rescue Me, Army Wives, K-Ville, Heroes, Third Watch, Brooklyn's Finest and Autumn in New York. She is repped by Abrams Artists Agency.

Best known for her role as Evie Murphy in The Leftovers, Brown was recently seen starring on For the People. Her other credits include Love, Will, Stitchers and Grey's Anatomy. She is repped by ICM Partners, Cinterra and Jackoway Austen Tyerman.

{blackbabes} Mariah Carey performs impromptu set at the Carlyle

Mariah Carey gave an impromptu performance at the swanky Carlyle on the Upper East Side Tuesday — so she was a surprise singer, though she's skirted rumors she'll appear on "The Masked Singer."

We're told that Carey — dressed in a floor-length red sequinned dress — was with two pals and a "large bodyguard" at the hotel's venerable Bemelmans Bar, when she spontaneously decided to get up and sing with the pianist.

A gobsmacked witness told us, "I was saying, 'I think that's Mariah Carey' to a friend." When the diva overheard the guy, she replied, "It's because I am Mariah Carey.' " The audience member added, "She was very nice."

Carey is a fan of the famed uptown spot: She posted a picture of herself and some friends there online in 2012, with the comment, "During an impromptu visit to the Carlyle, singing jazz standards I've loved since childhood."

Carey has recently deflected rumors that she'll appear on "The Masked Singer," coyly telling "Entertainment Tonight" when asked if she will be on the show, "Bye, girl, bye." She's teased an upcoming memoir and will celebrate the 25th anniversary of her "Merry Christmas" album with a re-release and an accompanying holiday tour.

{blackbabes} Syndicated ‘Dr. Oz Show’ Spinoff Series ‘The Good Dish’ Eyed For Fall 2020 Launch By Sony TV

The Good Dish

Sony Pictures Television is moving ahead with The Good Dish, a new syndicated daytime series from The Dr. Oz Show producers, which is on track for a fall 2020 launch.

Hosted by Daphne Oz (MasterChef Junior), Vanessa Williams, Gail Simmons (Top Chef) and Jamika Pessoa (The Next Food Star), The Good Dish spinoff grew out of weekly cooking segments featured on The Dr. Oz Show. It will provide simple shortcuts, everyday recipes and trends that will make life easier, bring families together, save money and most importantly…figure out what's for dinner, according to producers. The series hails from five-time Daytime Emmy-winning executive producers, Amy Chiaro and Stacy Rader, the team that oversees The Dr. Oz Show and ZoCo productions, Dr. Mehmet Oz's production company. This is the third new syndicated program announced for fall 2020, joining a Drew Barrymore talk show, from CBS TV Distribution, and a Nick Cannon talker from Lionsgate's Debmar-Mercury. Of the three, only the Drew Barrymore show has officially secured station clearances yet.

"We have experienced overwhelming feedback from our audiences on "The Dish on Oz" cooking segments, which have been recently featured on The Dr. Oz Show," said John Weiser, President First Run Television, SPT. "When Daphne Oz and this all-star ensemble were available, we recognized the opportunity for viewers, advertisers, and local broadcast stations. We have on-air tested this format and talent for two years perfecting this show we are now bringing to market. Spinoffs have the highest success rate of converting into multi-year franchises. In fact, spinoffs gave us the great Dr. Oz straight from Oprah!"

The Good Dish is produced by ZoCo Productions and distributed by Sony Pictures Television.

{blackbabes} ‘Prodigal Son’: Meagan Good To Recur In Fox Drama Series

Meagan Good

Minority Report alumna Meagan Good has been tapped for a key recurring role opposite Tom Payne, Michael Sheen and Bellamy Young in Fox's new drama series Prodigal Son, from Chris Fedak, Sam Sklaver, Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros TV.

Written by Feder and Sklaver and directed by Lee Toland Krieger, Prodigal Son is described as a fresh take on a crime franchise with a provocative and outrageous lead character and darkly comedic tone. It centers on Malcolm Bright (Payne), who has a gift. He knows how killers think, how their minds work. Why? His father Martin Whitly (Sheen) was one of the worst — a notorious serial killer called "The Surgeon." That's why Bright is the best criminal psychologist around; murder is the family business. He will use his twisted genius and razor-sharp instincts as a forensic profiler to help the NYPD solve crimes and stop killers, all while dealing with a manipulative mother (Young), annoyingly normal sister, a homicidal father still looking to bond with his prodigal son and his own constantly evolving neuroses.Intelligent but deeply damaged, Malcolm has a self-deprecating sense of humor and a surprising level of compassion.

Good will play Colette Swanson,  an FBI agent and criminal profiler who worked alongside Bright during his time at the Bureau where they developed a mutual distrust of each other. She now leads a prominent task force that takes over a case from Bright and his NYPD team.

Fedak and Sklaver executive produce with Krieger, Berlanti Prods' Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter. Warner Bros TV produces with studio-based Berlanti Prods. Fox Entertainment is a co-producer.

Good starred as the female lead in Minority Report, which aired on Fox for one season. She'll next be seen in Monster Hunter for Sony Screen Gems opposite Milla Jovovich and Ron Perlman, set for release in September 2020. She recently starred in the Screen Gems feature The Intruder, as well as Warner Bros.' Shazam! Good is repped by Gersh, Atlas Artists and Morris Yorn Barnes.

Prodigal Son airs Mondays at 9/8c on Fox.

Headey added, "I couldn't be more excited to take on the iconic character of Sikes from Oliver Twist. Flipping roles without apology or character softening is a brilliant way to breathe new life into established materials and bring it to new audiences."

Law, in his first major role, commented, "I'm excited to play such a well-loved literary character, and I'm looking forward to working with Martin Owen to bring to life his new take on the character in modern-day London."

{blackbabes} Why Rihanna Turned Down Super Bowl Halftime Show Offer: After Kaepernick, 'I Just Couldn't Be a Sellout'

After nearly a full year of speculation, Rihanna has confirmed that she "absolutely" rejected the NFL's offer for her to perform during the 2019 Super Bowl halftime show.

In a new interview with Vogue, the singer says she made the decision in solidarity with former San Francisco 49er Colin Kaepernick, whose peaceful protesting of police brutality went largely unsupported by the organization. Kaepernick even filed a grievance against the NFL, alleging that it conspired to keep him from playing in the league.

"I couldn't dare do that," Rihanna says. "For what? Who gains from that? Not my people. I just couldn't be a sellout. I couldn't be an enabler. There's things within that organization that I do not agree with at all, and I was not about to go and be of service to them in any way." The gig ultimately went to Maroon 5, with an assist from Travis Scott and Big Boi. When asked why he accepted the NFL's offer, Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine said, "No one thought about it more than I did. No one put more thought and love into this than I did. … I spoke to many people. Most importantly, though, I silenced all the noise and listened to myself, and made my decision about how I felt."

While there's no way of knowing whether Rihanna will eventually take the Super Bowl stage in the future, we do know which stars will be performing in 2020: The NFL recently announced that Jennifer Lopez and Shakira will co-headline the big show in February.

{blackbabes} The Good Doctor's Antonia Thomas Tees Up Claire's First Surgery: Will Mom Prove to Be Her Achilles Heel?

The Good Doctor Season 3, Episode 3 - Claire

The Good Doctor this week will turn its attention to another good doctor: Antonia Thomas' Claire Browne. Monday's episode (ABC, 10/9c) spends a day in the life of the third-year resident, who recently was chosen to be the first of Melendez's protégés to lead a surgical procedure.

"[Executive producer David Shore and I] talked about it a little bit ahead of time — like, an episode ahead of time," Antonia Thomas tells TVLine. "Well, maybe two episodes ahead of time, and he says, 'You know, I have this idea.' It was real exciting and real terrifying, because it felt like a big responsibility." But Thomas was excited for the opportunity to delve deeper into Claire's life at such an important moment in her journey. "I think it's really cool for Claire as a resident to get this accolade to be the first [resident] to lead surgery. And as a bit of character development, it's super fun to play."

In the episode, Claire faces complications at home and at work as she prepares for a gallbladder removal. The patient is a teenage girl whose relationship with her mom (9-1-1's Tracie Thoms) and her siblings has started to wear on her. Soon enough, Claire takes notice and tries to help.

The Good Doctor 3x03

"Claire is such an empathetic person," Thomas says. "She's always trying to dig deep in terms of finding ways to connect, and I think— I don't know that she necessarily sees a bit of herself [in this patient], but Claire is always trying to use her own experiences to empathize and help in whatever way that she can."

Meanwhile, the doctor has her own set of familial issues, now that she has allowed Breeze (returning guest star Sharon Leal) to crash on her couch. "In the lead-up to her big surgery, that's on her mind," Thomas says. "With Claire's mom, there's a lot of guilt, a lot of worry and a lot of stress, so to have that kind of playing alongside this massive thing for her [is overwhelming]. She's just trying to juggle the two… and as the day progresses, and the surgery progresses, that whole situation culminates in something a little bit shocking."

{blackbabes} Dynasty's Diahann Carroll Dead at 84

Diahann Carroll, who as Dynasty's Dominique Deveraux played one of the first major black characters on a primetime soap, died Friday. She was 84.

Carroll passed at home after a long illness with cancer, per The Hollywood Reporter.

She was featured prominently on the original Dynasty and its offshoot The Colbys in the 1980s, playing the deliciously wicked half-sister of John Forsythe's Blake Carrington. The role allowed Carroll to fulfill a dream she voiced to People in 1984: "I want to be the first black bitch on television."

Another signature part for the Tony-winning actress was the title role in Julia, a 1970s comedy about a widowed nurse raising her young son. The show ran three seasons on NBC and was groundbreaking in that its protagonist was a black character whose profession was not that of maid, butler or servant.

Carroll's career spanned six decades and included TV appearances on A Different World, Lonesome Dove: The Series, Soul Food, Grey's Anatomy and White Collar. She joined the Television Hall of Fame in 2011.

She wed four times (to manager Monte Kay, clothier Freddie Glusman, editor Robert DeLeon and singer Vic Damone), and she is survived by her daughter, Suzanne Kay, and grandchildren August and Sydney.

{blackbabes} Nicole Ari Parker To Star In Family Music Drama ‘Opus’ From Felicia D. Henderson In the Works At Fox

With Empire coming to an end, Fox is looking to keep co-star Nicole Ari Parker in the fold with a new series. The network has given a script commitment with penalty to Opus, a one-hour family music drama starring and executive produced by Empire's Parker, from writer Felicia D. Henderson (Empire), producer Darryl Taja and Empire studio 20th Century Fox TV, where Henderson is under a deal.

Written by Henderson, in Opus, classical and urban music will clash when Willie Mae Gray (Parker), Europe's most celebrated and only African American conductor, suddenly returns to Baltimore to reinvent her hometown's crumbling symphony orchestra, while attempting to rebuild the relationship with her teenage son, an underground MC on the rise.

Parker and Henderson executive produce with Darryl Taja (The Perfect Guy), Stephen Endelman and Kara Feifer. Opus is a co-production of 20th Century Fox TV and Fox Entertainment.

Parker began as a recurring on Empire and was promoted to series regular beginning in season 5. She previously recurred on I'm Dying Up Here and Younger and guest-starred in Star and The Romanoffs, among other credits. She's repped by LINK Entertainment and Gersh.

Henderson recently served as a consulting producer on Empire. She co-created and executive produced the BET series The Quad and spent two years as a co-executive producer on Netflix's Marvel drama The Punisher. She also developed and executive produced the Showtime series Soul Food and worked on Gossip Girl and Fringe. Henderson started out in comedy with stints on Everybody Hates Chris, The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, Family Matters and Moesha.

{blackbabes} The Rookie Adds Once Upon a Time's Mekia Cox as Nolan's New TO

Rookie Mekia Cox

Once Upon a Time princess Mekia Cox is returning to ABC, as a series regular on The Rookie.

Cox — whose TV credits also include Chicago Med, Secrets and Lies Season 2, Undercovers and 90210 — will play Nyla Harper, an LAPD detective who after four years of undercover work nearly lost herself, our sister site Deadline reports. Now, Nyla is hoping to find normalcy again as she takes on the role of John Nolan's new training officer.

The announcement of Cox's casting comes one week into the light procedural's sophomore run — which is airing Sundays at 10/9c and somewhat remarkably held steady in the ratings with its premiere — and on the heels of a third-party investigation that found no merit to assorted allegations made by exited cast member Afton Williamson, who in Season 1 played the title character's TO, Talia Bishop.

Bishop's abrupt absence was explained away in the season opener, when John and DHS agent Jessica made reference to her joining the ATF, now that her career at the LAPD had been stymied by the discovery of an omission from her application.

Cox will debut in the fourth episode of Season 2, set to air Oct. 20.
