Grammy-nominated singer and actor Janelle Monae will deliver the 2017 commencement address at Dillard University next month.
The university will confer more than 160 undergraduate degrees on Saturday, May 13, at 8 a.m.
Monae, who's known for her activism against social injustices and police brutality, is also an advocate for STEM, programs that promote the study of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
Dillard President Walter M. Kimbrough says he pursued Monae for more than a year to get her to agree to deliver the commencement address. He says they're "very excited to see this day come."
Last year, Monae began Fem the Future, an initiative to create more opportunities to advance opportunities for women through music, arts, mentorship and education. In 2015, she launched her own record label, Wondaland Records.
