Ashanti's new single, Never Should Have, arrives on iTunes this week, foreshadowing the singer's repeatedly delayed fifth album Braveheart, due June 11 on Written Entertainment/eOne Music.
Sanji Senaka directed the Never Should Have video, shot in Santa Barbara, Calif., to premiere soon.
Ashanti, who appears as Latasha Montclair on Lifetime's Army Wives (9 p.m. ET/PT Sundays), exploded in 2002 with her eponymous debut, which sold 504,000 copies its first week and won a Grammy for best contemporary R&B album.
It set a SoundScan record for opening sales by a female record, eclipsing Alicia Keys and Lauryn Hill. She also became the first woman to plant three songs in the top 10 of Billboard's singles chart with Foolish, What's Luv? and Always on Time.
She's appeared in several TV shows and the films Coach Carter, John Tucker Must Die and Resident Evil Extinction.
Ashanti's most recent album, 2008's The Declaration, entered Billboard at No. 6.
