Jada Pinkett Smith is reprising her role as Lena James for Netflix's upcoming "A Different World" sequel series.

Pinkett Smith teased her comeback in an Instagram post on Wednesday afternoon, sharing a picture of her trailer with her "A Different World" character's name posted on the door. The post was captioned, "She back #ADifferentWorld." Netflix-affiliated Instagram account Strong Black Lead also posted the photo, which Netflix's main Instagram account then posted on its Story, confirming the news.

The "A Different World" sequel series was first reported to be in development at Netflix back in 2024, and in November 2025, it was officially picked up to series.

Just like in the 1987 edition, the fresh take is set at the fictional HBCU Hillman College. Maleah Joi Moon leads the cast as Deborah Wayne, the daughter of original characters Dwayne Wayne (Kadeem Hardison) and Whitney Gilbert (Jasmine Guy). The show's official logline states that the show "follows Deborah as she enters her freshman year at her parents' HBCU alma mater and finds the shadow of her parents difficult to escape. She sets out to build her own legacy — while having the time of her life — alongside a whole new generation of Hillman's best and brightest."

Other cast members include lijah Kai ("Everybody Hates Chris") as Rashida, Chibuikem Uche ("One Of Us Is Lying") as Kojo, Cornell Young IV ("Doing Life") as Shaquille, Jordan Aaron Hall ("The Idea of You") as Amir, and newcomer Kennedi Reece as Hazel.

The original "A Different World" launched as a spinoff to "The Cosby Show," and followed Lisa Bonet's Denise Huxtable as she adjusted to life at Hillman College. Bonet only starred for the first season before giving way to series regulars Guy, Hardison, Dawnn Lewis, Glynn Turman, Cory Tyler, Lou Myers, Darryl M. Bell, Cree Summer and Charnele Brown. Pinkett Smith joined the show as Lena James just before Season 5. The show ran for six seasons on NBC.

Felicia Pride serves as writer, executive producer and showrunner on the series. Debbie Allen, Mandy Summers, Tom Werner, Gina Prince-Bythewood and Reggie Rock Bythewood also serve as executive producers, with Allen also set to direct three episodes, including the first.
