Just because Taraji P. Henson is 47, that doesn't mean she can't win over audiences in action-hero roles.
The "Empire" actress and Academy Award nominee stars in the new flick "Proud Mary," in which she plays a "natural-born killer" running the streets of Boston.
"I surprised myself!" Henson quipped to Jimmy Fallon on Monday about the physically demanding role. "I'm an actress. This was a role that I dreamt of."
Henson adds she had been dropping hints on Instagram to DC and Marvel Comics producers hoping to get their attention, but nothing turned up.
However, Clint Culpepper of Screen Gems presented her with the "Proud Mary" script. Then Henson thought about her age and wondered if it was possible to pull off.
"The reason I had to do this film was because usually women after we get 40 they send us out to pasture," she said making a statement then flaunting her taunt frame. "My point is we see men of all ages over 40 … and they always get these heroic roles. Why don't you see women like this? All of my friends in the industry look amazing and they're quite athletic. Why aren't we all in films like this every year."
"Proud Mary" hits theaters January 12.
