{blackbabes} Singer Michelle Williams says she was suicidal

It took nearly 20 years for singer Michelle Williams to realize that she had been struggling with depression.

"I didn't know until I was in my thirties what was going on. I just thought it was growing pains," the singer and former member of Destiny's Child, 37, said on "The Talk" on Wednesday. "I've been suffering since the age of between 13 and 15. At that age, I didn't know what to call it."

She says her situation got "really, really bad … to the point of I was suicidal."

"I was to that place where it got so dark and heavy … I wanted out," she said.

During her time in Destiny's Child, Williams says she told the group's manager Mathew Knowles — bandmate Beyoncé's dad — about her depression.

She recalled her conversation with Knowles, saying, "When I disclosed it to our manager at the time — bless his heart —he was like, 'Y'all just signed a multimillion-dollar deal, you're about to go on tour. What do you have to be depressed about?' So I was like, 'Oh, maybe I'm just tired.'"

She says other people in her life at the time expressed similar sentiments. "He could have been right … I think he wanted me to be grateful, which I was, but I was still sad," she said of their interaction.

Of her life now, she said, "It's off. It's released. I've released it."

She finished the conversation by applauding Demi Lovato for being open about mental health mental and said, "Depression doesn't mean lazy. Self-harm don't mean you want attention. It's not any of that."
