Some roles are more complicated than others, especially Viola Davis' role as Rose in August Wilson's "Fences."
"It's difficult to handle the language," the actress explained during a talk at the new BUILD Studio on Tuesday. "I mean Denzel [Washington] had a 13-page monologue, I had a four-page monologue and [Wilson] has a tendency to write monologues that are very rapid, that are like rants, so you got to keep it going, but its got to be felt."
She continued, "You cannot leave out a word. It's very much like Shakespeare in that sense. You can't leave out an 'and' or a 'but' or you mess up the whole poetry of the line. In fact, when you would rehearse with August, if you missed an 'and' or a 'but' you'd have to go back and do it again."
The actress, who took home the Golden Globe for her performance, was also in the stage version of "Fences" with Washington in 2010.
Davis also revealed during the talk that she had to do 23 takes of her big, dramatic moment in the film.
"I had a really nice drink after that scene," she laughed, adding that it takes learning specific techniques to be able to do a scene like that over and over again.
"The same technique that afforded me the 114 performances on stage is the same technique I had to use in the film. There are just certain characters that are like that. You got to do the work."
