Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce's title as the world's fastest woman has officially been handed over to her countrywoman.
Jamaica's Fraser-Pryce missed out on nabbing the gold at the women's 100-meter sprint at the Rio Olympics on Saturday to Games newbie Elaine Thompson, also from Jamaica. The silver was won by Team U.S.A.'s Tori Bowie, who also made her Olympics debut this year, while the bronze wen the Fraser-Pryce.
Fraser-Pryce, 29, was hoping to make history with Saturday's night race to become the first person to win three gold Olympic titles in the same individual event. She previously won the gold for the 100-meter race in the 2008 Games in Beijing and the 2012 Games in London. In London she also won the silver in the 200-meter race and the 4x100-meter relay with Team Jamaica.
Bowie, who hails from Sandhill, Mississippi, previously said that she was hoping to make her small town proud.
"One day I hope that I can come to Sandhill, and there's a huge sign that says 'Welcome to Sandhill, Home to Tori Bowie,' " she said ahead of the Games.
