Athletes from across the Games' 42 sporting events tell PEOPLE about their pre-Rio training regimen, including the key disciplines they focus on at the gym.
On average, athletes like sprinter Jarryd Wallace, swimmer Jessica Long and gymnasts Simone Biles and Aly Raisman spend around 28 hours a week in the gym.
Wallace and Biles even incorporate two-a-days workouts into their regimen up to four times a week, they shared.
"[It's about] staying consistent and really just pounding out the yardage," explains Long.
Runner LaShawn Merritt argues that the training process is non-stop, though. "[It's] 24-hours-a-day, because training is not only just physical, out on the track."
Adds Gabby Douglas, "Working on the consistency and adding those difficult skills... more numbers, like more repetitions."
The repetition is important, echoes men's gymnast Sam Mikulak.
"Keep refining that muscle memory so that when it comes time for those pressure situations," he says, "I salute my hand and just let my body take over."
