Mariah Carey just proved that it's totally possible for a star to end up falling in love with a fan...In fact, that's exactly what happened between her and James Packer (yes, meaning there's hope for you and your celeb crush)!
The 46-year-old singer sat down for an interview with Complex magazine, opening up about her love life and revealing that her fiancé was a big fan before the two ever even met.
After her split from Nick Cannon (which we'll get to later), Mariah said she really wasn't looking for love, but then her friend, filmmaker Brett Ratner, introduced her to "a regular, normal person," Packer. Even though he admitted to being long obsessed with her music and still listens to different Mariah playlists while he travels, she wasn't scared off—she actually thinks it's really important!
"Actually, if he didn't like my music, then how would I be able to handle him being around when all I'm doing is creating?" she explained. "It's cool."
Now, the two are preparing to walk down the aisle. Mariah explained how their relationship is built off of a shared sense of humor and the fact that they both understand one another's busy schedules.
"I don't expect him to be at every little thing that I do, and vice versa," she told the publication. "He's got a lot of stuff on his plate and so do I. There's a mutual understanding."
The other mutual understanding is the fact that they're both very wealthy entities coming together, and some stuff simply needs to be taken care of before saying "I do."
"We would like for it not to be a big thing, but the reality is it has to be," she admitted. "Because there's things that are specifically mine, and he's got huge friggin' conglomerate stuff, and I'm not looking to take that from him. So it has to be dealt with. Anytime you get married to somebody [it does]—and I should know. This'll be marriage number three."
And that brings us back to her divorce from Cannon, which Mariah can admit she didn't expect to ever happen.
"I never thought I would have babies with someone and then get divorced," she said, "Like, 'Oh, great job. Repeat your past.'"
She continued, "But life happens and it was supposed to happen. It's fine. For [my children], I wish it hadn't happened that way. For me, it was...[singing Johnny Mathis and Deniece Williams' 'Too Much, Too Little, Too Late'] Guess it's over. Call it a day."
