Kerry Washington is no stranger to typecasting.

The 39-year-old may be one of television's biggest stars, but even she has experienced Hollywood's harsh side.

"Before Scandal, I was actually cast in two other pilots. Both went to series, but I was fired and recast," Washington told comedian Aziz Ansari on Variety's Actors on Actors.

"For both, it was because they wanted me to sound more 'girlfriend,' more like 'hood,' more 'urban.' "

Although Washington dealt with the repercussions of not fitting racial stereotypes, the Confirmation star said she soon realized this experience wasn't unique to people like herself.

"I've had friends of mine say, like, they're tired of 'gayface' and I was like, 'What's gayface?' They were like, 'It's the gay version of blackface, like come in and be more effeminate,' " Washington recalled.

Despite the setbacks, Washington rose to the top and has taken her craft in her own hands – Washington served as executive producer of Confirmation.

"I definitely feel like I'm at that point where it's nice to not have to sit at home and wait to be invited to the party, but to be creating work for yourself," the actress said.

Season 6 of Scandal will premiere in 2017 on ABC.
