As was the case with her 2013 self-titled visual album, she gave the world little warning before dropping her new album, Lemonade on Tidal Saturday night, hot the heels of the premiere of her special on HBO.
The album, which features 12 new songs and a short film is based on "every woman's journey of self-knowledge and healing," according to a press release.
Although Queen Bey remained mum about her new music – avoiding any form of promotion, unless you count that epic Super Bowl halftime show and world tour announcement – this surprise was preceded by the unexpected debut of her hit song "Formation" and its buzzed-about music video in February. The Formation World Tour kicks off Wednesday in Miami.
Still, an abundance of signs, including unlisted videos on her Vevo page and that Lemonade teaser, amped up speculation among Beyhive loyalists in the days leading up to the release.
Why all the hysteria? In the words of Bey: "'Cause I slay."
