12 Years a Slave

Gravity dominated Sunday's Academy Awards, taking home seven trophies, but lost the Best Picture prize to 12 Years a Slave.

As it has done all season, Steve McQueen's slavery drama won few awards during the night — this time just three — but prevailed with the top honor. 12 Years, whose producers include Brad Pitt, is the first film directed by a black filmmaker to win.

12 Years also won adapted screenplay and supporting actress for Lupita Nyong'o, who became the 16th actor and ninth in the supporting actress category to win for their film debut.

As expected, Gravity swept all but one of the below-the-line categories it was up for and picked up Best Director for Alfonso Cuaron, who is the first Latino to win the award. Cuaron also shared the film editing award with Mark Sanger. This is the 23rd time there's been a Best Picture/Director split and the first time in 61 years there's a back-to-back split.

Gravity won the most awards without winning Best Picture since Cabaret won eight and lost the top award to The Godfather in 1973.

Dallas Buyers Club
became the fifth film to sweep the male acting categories with wins in lead actor for Matthew McConaughey and supporting actor for Jared Leto. The film also won makeup and hairstyling for its team that worked on a $250 budget.

Cate Blanchett completed her awards sweep, taking Best Actress for Blue Jasmine. She is the sixth person to win both Best Actress and Best Supporting actress after Helen Hayes, Ingrid Bergman, Maggie Smith, Meryl Streep and Jessica Lange.

Frozen grabbed animated feature honors and original song for "Let It Go." Robert Lopez, who co-wrote the tune with his wife Kristen Anderson-Lopez, became the 12th person to EGOT — win an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony — with the victory.

Other winners include Spike Jonze (Her) for original screenplay and 20 Feet From Stardom for documentary.
