Kelly Rowland has strived in the decade since Destiny's Child's members first branched out into solo careers, to get out of the shadow of her force-of-nature bandmate Beyoncé.
But while Bey has skyrocketed to superstardom, her childhood friend has had to be content with a few sporadic hits.
This didn't always sit well with Rowland, and she confesses her conflicted feelings about her pal on the emotionally wrenching Dirty Laundry. She also concedes to hiding that she was a battered woman. The edgy track is easily the standout on Talk a Good Game (* * ½ out of four).
Later, she's joined by Beyoncé and Michelle Williams on the kiss-off track You Changed. Rowland puts her stamp on a few more nuggets including the provocative Kisses Down Low. Two songs — the Joni Mitchell-sampling Gone and the gritty Street Life — take her out of her comfort zone. Neither song is a home run, but at least she's shrugging off the shadow.
