R&B star Mary J. Blige has opened up about her controversial Burger King commercial, which was pulled in April following a wave of racism complaints, insisting she never meant to offend anyone.

The U.S. TV spot, in which the Family Affair hitmaker sang about the fast food chain's new product Snack Wraps, came under attack from African-American rights groups, who claimed a black singer promoting a fried chicken meal was bordering on "buffoonery".

The ad was subsequently yanked from the airwaves, allegedly due to licensing issues.

Blige, who addressed the controversy at the time, has now spoken of her sadness over the way the ad was perceived, revealing she hoped the commercial would be tasteful and empowering.

Speaking to New York radio station Hot 97, she said, "It just broke my heart. It was a mistake, but I did it because I thought it was something that wouldn't come out like that. It was sold to us that I would be shot in an iconic way. I was looking for someone to have mercy, but no one had mercy. It was a learning experience.

"It hurt my feelings. It crushed me for like two days. I want to apologize to everyone that was offended or thought that I would do something so disrespectful to our culture... I thought I was doing something right, so forgive me."
