{blackbabes} Angela Bassett & Courtney B. Vance Ink First-Look Deal With 20th TV, Set ‘Monkey Boy’ Drama At Onyx

Angela Bassett & Courtney B. Vance Ink First-Look Deal With 20th TV

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

20th Television has closed a first-look deal with Angela Bassett, Courtney B. Vance and their Bassett Vance Productions to develop and executive produce comedy, drama, limited series and TV movies for linear networks and streamers, with an emphasis on platforms across Disney Entertainment Television.

The first project under the multi-year pact is Monkey Boy, inspired by bestselling author Francisco Goldman's Pulitzer Prize fiction finalist novel, which has been set up for development at Onyx Collective. The drama is created by Joshua Allen Griffith (Mrs. America), who will write the pilot script, with Ben Smith supervising. If Monkey Boy goes to series, the duo, who met on 20th TV's Hulu series Only Murders In The Building where they co-wrote multiple episodes, will write it, with Smith serving as showrunner. Griffith and Smith also executive produce with Bassett Vance Productions.

Goldman's novel follows an investigative journalist who discovers a connection between a political assassination in Central America and an unsolved murder in his hometown, the Latino enclave of East Boston, forcing him to confront a history of childhood trauma that he's been running from his entire life.

"Angela and Courtney are deeply thoughtful storytellers, with incredible intellect and insight, and true ability to unearth distinct, relevant and unique material that reflects the human experience and the world in which we live," said Karey Burke, president of 20th Television, a part of Disney TV Studios. "Their indelible work bringing characters to life on 20th Television series over the years has been remarkable, and we are thrilled to embark on this next creative chapter with them."

The first-look agreement builds on Bassett's ongoing relationship with 20th TV as star/executive producer on the studio's ABC series 9-1-1 and executive producer on the spinoff, Fox's 9-1-1: Lone Star. She also recently signed a new deal with the studio to continue on the mothership series. Additionally, Vance stars alongside Niecy Nash in the new 20th TV limited series from Ryan Murphy Grotesquerie, which premieres on FX and streams on Hulu Sept. 25, reuniting Vance with Murphy and the studio after his Emmy-winning role on The People vs. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story.

"Angela and I are always ready and willing to meet the moment when it comes to creating opportunities for storytellers to do what they do best and offer extraordinary, memorable characters and stories to the world. The new deal with 20th Television offers Bassett Vance Productions just that opportunity," Vance said.

Added Bassett, "We look forward to continuing to expand our footprint as producers and visionaries. This opportunity with Karey, Eric [Schrier], and the team at 20th Television opens up a multitude of possibilities for us to both introduce new voices and to work with other creators we've long admired. Courtney and I are ready to roll up our sleeves and get to work."

Bassett Vance Productions is led by Lynnette Ramirez, President, and Loni Rodgers, Director of Development. The company's team also includes Eric Parker Reid and Chelsea Maloney, newly promoted to Creative Executive, and Anita Johnson, Company Manager.

"Our Bassett Vance Productions team is so excited to begin this new journey through Angela with 20th Television," Ramirez said. "For us to join forces with a studio that has such wide-reaching content opportunities is a dream for any producing team.."

Bassett and Vance are coming off a multi-year deal with MTV Entertainment Studios. It yielded the made-for-TV film Heist 88, starring Vance, which won an NAACP Image Award for Writing (Dwayne Johnson-Cochran). The company's TV slate includes projects in development at wiip, Skydance TV, MGM Studios, UTV and NBC.

Bassett received an Honorary Oscar at the Governors Awards earlier this year and an Emmy Award this past weekend for her narration work on Queens, a docuseries for 20th TV's Disney sibling Nat Geo. She is repped by Gersh and Fox Rothschild who also repped Bassett Vance Productions in the negotiations with 20th TV.

Jennifer Beals (Flashdance) has wrapped a lead role opposite Chloe Bennet and Phil Dunster in the New Mexico-set alien dramedy Hello Out There, marking the first feature from writer-director Otis Blum.

Shot over the summer in New Mexico, the film centers on Minnie (Bennet), a young journalist who embarks on a road trip across the state with her cousin, Rex (Dunster), a punk rock guitarist fresh out of rehab, who is trying to figure out what's left. Their stated mission: to investigate Area 51 and unearth the truth about extraterrestrial life. But as the journey unfolds, a deeper, more personal reason for their quest comes to light.

Beals plays Judith, an art dealer who lives in Santa Fe. She is Minnie's mother-in-law, and the two are bound together not only in name but also through shared tragedy. Thomas Mahoney (Wild Indian, Only the Good Survive) produced the film via Handsome Watson, with Purple Intuition providing production services.

Breaking out as a pop culture icon of the '80s with her Golden Globe-nominated turn in Paramount's romantic drama Flashdance, Beals is also known for starring in Showtime's The L Word, a drama series of the 2000s examining the West Hollywood lives of a group of lesbian and bisexual women, as well as the 2019 sequel series The L Word: Generation Q.

A collaborator of Denzel Washington's on the neo-noir mystery Devil in a Blue Dress and the post-apocalyptic actioner The Book of Eli, Beals has more recently been seen in the popular YA titles Before I Fall and After, as well as series including The Book of Boba Fett, Swamp Thing, and Law & Order: Organized Crime. {blackbabes} Gabrielle Union To Produce & Star In Horror Pic ‘The Casket Girls’ From QC Entertainment

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

Fresh off the TIFF premiere of their new documentary Vice Is Broke, Get Out producer QC Entertainment has enlisted Gabrielle Union (Riff Raff) to star in The Casket Girls, a new horror film to be directed by Justin Dyck (Anything for Jackson), which they will produce and fully finance.

Written by Thomas Lennon & Robert Ben Garant (Night at the Museum), with revisions by Keith Cooper (Anything for Jackson) & Dyck, The Casket Girls is inspired by the true story of a group of young women sent from France to New Orleans to become brides to French colonists in the early 1700s. They arrived with small chests, or "caskets" of their belongings, hence the name given by locals. According to legend, upon the girls' arrival, the homicide rate in New Orleans rose dramatically, with stories of men drained of their blood. The girls were blamed and feared to be demons or vampires, and for the city's protection, they were imprisoned in the attic of the Vatican-controlled Ursuline Convent, which still stands today in the heart of the French Quarter, locked away behind an impenetrable door and windows bolted shut by nails blessed by the Pope himself.

The film takes place in today's world as Detective Shay Williams (Union) and her partner become trapped inside the Ursuline Convent with a group of tourists when the Casket Girls escape from their attic prison for the first time in over 300 years.

QC Entertainment's Sean McKittrick and Raymond Mansfield will produce the pic, with Union joining QC's Edward H. Hamm Jr. as exec producer. Production is scheduled to commence in Victoria, BC, in association with British Columbia-based Lighthouse Pictures, on October 15. Jameson Parker will exec produce for Lighthouse Pictures. Atomic Honey is handling U.S. casting, alongside Kris and Kara Casting in Canada.

Nominated for Gotham and Independent Spirit Awards for her starring turn opposite Jeremy Pope in A24's The Inspection, Union earned an NAACP Image Award nomination as star and exec producer of Netflix's rom-com The Perfect Find. Recently, she also produced Michael Showalter's The Idea of You, starring Anne Hathaway and Nicholas Galitzine, which released in May to 50 million worldwide viewers on Prime Video, becoming Amazon MGM's highest romantic-comedy debut of all time. Next up, she'll be seen starring alongside Jennifer Coolidge, Ed Harris, and Bill Murray in the crime comedy Riff Raff, which is coming off its TIFF premiere.

Rated 97% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, Dyck's horror debut Anything for Jackson, about a grieving couple's satanic attempts to put their dead grandson's soul in an unborn baby, premiered at Fantasia Festival in 2020. More recently, he's helmed multiple episodes of Shudder's Creepshow.

Led by partners McKittrick, Mansfield and Hamm Jr., QC Entertainment is best known for producing the Oscar winners Get Out and BlacKkKlansman — from filmmakers Jordan Peele and Spike Lee, respectively — having been involved in every aspect of both projects, from development to production and release. McKittrick also produced Peele's sophomore feature Us, which notched the biggest opening ever for an original horror film, with QC most recently producing It Lives Inside, Bishal Dutta's SXSW prize-winning horror-thriller released by Neon last September.

In television, QC has Richie Mehta's true crime series Poacher, which premiered at Sundance and was released on Prime Video in February. The company's first foray into non-fiction filmmaking led to financing and producing Eddie Huang's Vice Is Broke, which examines Vice's transformation from indie magazine to media behemoth.

Union is represented by CAA, Range Media Partners, and Felker Toczek Suddleson. Dyck and Cooper are repped by WME, Adam Goldworm of Aperture Entertainment, and Brecheen, Feldman, Breimer. Lennon & Garant are both with Artists First and Jackoway Austen Tyerman, with UTA repping Lennon and CAA repping Garant.

{blackbabes} Beyoncé On Why She’s Moved Away From Making Music Videos: “Sometimes A Visual Can Be A Distraction”

Beyoncé

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

Beyoncé finally shared why she has distanced herself from making music videos for her latest albums.

After trailblazing the visual aspect of albums, Beyoncé's latest albums, like Cowboy Carter and Renaissance, have no music videos, and there's a reason for that.

"I thought it was important that during a time where all we see is visuals, that the world can focus on the voice," the singer told GQ. "The music is so rich in history and instrumentation. It takes months to digest, research, and understand."

She continued, "The music needed space to breathe on its own. Sometimes a visual can be a distraction from the quality of the voice and the music. The years of hard work and detail put into an album that takes over four years! The music is enough. The fans from all over the world became the visual. We all got the visual on tour. We then got more visuals from my film."

In the same interview, Beyoncé namedropped some of the artists that have inspired her

"I love and respect all of the female singers-songwriters who are out right now.… Raye, Victoria Monét, Sasha Keable, Chloe x Halle, and Reneé Rapp. I love Doechii and GloRilla, and I just heard That Mexican OT, he's from Houston…. He goes hard!" she said. "I really like 'Please Please Please' by Sabrina Carpenter, and I think that Thee Sacred Souls and Chappell Roan are talented and interesting. I'm obsessed with my backseat baby…. I'm a Smiler."

However, Beyoncé said that she spends most of her time "listening to the classics" from Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye. The "Texas Hold 'Em" singer called Inside Out 2 "the best movie I've seen this year" said she's currently watching House of the Dragon and The Chi.

Peacock has given a straight-to-series order to The 'Burbs, a contemporary series adaptation of the 1989 Universal Pictures horror-comedy film of the same name. Celeste Hughey (Palm Royale, Dead to Me) is writing and executive producing the mystery comedy series which will star Keke Palmer (Nope, Password), also an executive producer on the project from UCP, a division of Universal Studio Group.

Seth MacFarlane (Ted), Erica Huggins and Aimee Carlson executive produce for Fuzzy Door under the company's UCP overall deal alongside Brian Grazer, Kristen Zolner and Natalie Berkus for Imagine Entertainment, which produced the 1989 movie. Dana Olsen, the writer of the film directed by Joe Dante, will serve as co-executive producer on the series.

Set in present-day suburbia, The 'Burbs follows a young couple — with Palmer playing the wife — returning to the husband's childhood home. Their world is upended when new neighbors move in next door, bringing old secrets of the cul-de-sac to light, and new deadly threats shatter the illusion of their quiet little neighborhood.

The series will film in Los Angeles at the same location as the original 1989 film, the backlot of Universal Studios Hollywood.

The film, which stars Tom Hanks and Carrie Fisher as the couple, along with Bruce Dern and Corey Feldman, has achieved a cult status after an inauspicious box-office start. It streams on Peacock.

This marks the latest Universal film title to be turned into a series for sibling streamer Peacock. The list includes MacFarlane's Ted, which has been renewed for a second season.

Mystery comedies are having a moment with hits such as Hulu's Only Murder In the Building and Peacock's own Poker Face and Based On a True Story.

Hughey is repped by UTA, Kaplan Perrone Entertainment, and Hansen, Jacobson, Teller. Palmer is repped by 3 Arts and Hertz Lichtenstein Young & Polk. Fuzzy Door is repped by WME and Jackoway Austen. Olsen is repped by attorney Daniel Riviera.
