{blackbabes} Final farewell? 'Heartbroken' Serena quits Wimbledon in tears

American legend Serena Williams's dreams of winning an eighth Wimbledon singles title and equalling Margaret Court's Grand Slam record of 24 ended in tears on Tuesday as further doubt was cast on her future in the sport.

The 39-year-old was leading 3-1 in the first set of her first round match against Aliaksandra Sasnovich of Belarus when she slipped and injured her right leg.

Williams returned from receiving medical attention but called it a day at 3-3 and walked off Centre Court in tears.

"I was heartbroken to have to withdraw today after injuring my right leg," she said in a statement posted late evening on her Instagram account.

Perhaps tellingly, she waved to all four sides of the court as she left.

However, she gave no indication in the statement of how serious the injury was nor about her future.

It is the first time that Williams has bowed out in the opening round of Wimbledon in 20 appearances.

She had only once previously lost in the first round at any Slam, in the 2012 French Open.

The tears said it all as with the withdrawals of 2019 champion Simona Halep and of Naomi Osaka prior to the tournament the American would have fancied her chances of at last equalling the controversial Court's landmark.

"Brutal for @serenawilliams but centre court is extremely slippy out there. Not easy to move out there," tweeted British star Andy Murray.

Wimbledon's 2019 star Coco Gauff said she could not look as the player who inspired her to take up tennis wept as she left the stage.

"I turned away," said 17-year-old Gauff after beating British wildcard Francesca Jones in her first round match.

"I was in the gym actually stretching. I turned away because stuff like that makes me, like, really emotional."

- 'Oh my God' -

Gauff, who in 2019 as a qualifier beat Serena Williams's elder sister Venus on her way to the last 16, said she hoped the injury was not too severe.

"I wish that hopefully she can have a speedy recovery," said Gauff.

"Yeah, you could tell she was really emotional.

"Nobody ever wants to retire, but especially at a Grand Slam, a place as special as Wimbledon after waiting two years to come back (it was cancelled last year due to the coronavirus pandemic)."

Williams, who also had strapping on her right thigh, hasn't won a Slam since the 2017 Australian Open losing in four finals, twice at Wimbledon and two at the US Open.

Sasnovich said she felt for her "a great champion, and it's a sad story."

"It was very slippery, I felt, as well.

"When she did the angled shot, I couldn't run because it was so slippery.

"But, okay, it's the same for everyone," added Sasnovich.

Williams's slip came at the same end of the court as that of Adrian Mannarino which brought a premature end to the Frenchman's hard fought match with Roger Federer.

Mannarino fell late in the fourth set and pulled out at the beginning of the fifth set.

Federer felt the surface was more slippery when the roof is in use which it had been due to rain earlier on Tuesday.

"You do have to move very, very carefully out there. If you push too hard in the wrong moments, you do go down," said Federer.

"This is obviously terrible that it's back-to-back matches and it hits Serena as well. Oh, my God, I can't believe it."

Serena's tearful exit does not mean the end of the Williams family's interest in the singles.

Venus came through her first round match earlier on Tuesday in what is her record 90th Grand Slam appearance.

The 41-year-old five-time champion beat Mihaela Buzarnescu of Romania 7-5, 4-6, 6-3.

{blackbabes} Venus Williams likely to miss Olympics for first time since 1996

Venus Williams, the most decorated Olympic tennis player in history with five medals and four golds, indicated Tuesday that she will miss the Games for the first time since 1996.

Williams, after winning her Wimbledon first-round singles match, was asked if she will play doubles or mixed doubles in Tokyo.

"I don't think so," said Williams, who did not qualify for the Olympics outright in singles.

Williams, 41, defeated Romanian Mihaela Buzarnescu 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 on Tuesday to become the fourth-oldest woman to win a Wimbledon singles match. It's her record 90th Grand Slam main draw dating to the 1997 French Open.

The top four U.S. women in the WTA rankings after the French Open qualified for the Olympics in singles. Williams was ranked 17th among Americans and 103rd overall at the time.

Williams could still have been selected for one of up to two doubles-only spots via USTA discretion.

She owns three Olympic doubles titles with sister Serena (who indicated Saturday that she is not playing the Tokyo Games) and mixed doubles silver with Rajeev Ram from 2016.

Williams played her first Grand Slam women's doubles match in three years at the French Open earlier this month, losing in the first round with Coco Gauff. Williams is expected to play Wimbledon mixed doubles with Australian Nick Kyrgios.

The U.S. Olympic women's tennis team has not been announced, but in Serena's absence, the singles roster is expected to be Sofia Kenin, Jennifer Brady, Gauff and Jessica Pegula. The highest-ranked American doubles players are Nicole Melichar and Bethanie Mattek-Sands.

Also this week, Romanian Simona Halep and Swiss Stan Wawrinka joined the group of Grand Slam winners to withdraw from the Tokyo Olympics.

Halep, the world's third-ranked women's singles player, tweeted that she is still out with a left calf tear that forced her out of the French Open and Wimbledon, tournaments that she has won.

Wawrinka, a 2008 Olympic doubles champion with Roger Federer, said he is out after foot surgery, according to reports. Wawrinka, 36, last played in March.

Rafael Nadal and Dominic Thiem previously announced they will not play in Tokyo.

{blackbabes} Venus Williams is fourth-oldest woman to win Wimbledon match; Roger Federer advances

WIMBLEDON, England (AP) — Venus Williams accumulated 10 aces Tuesday by smacking serves at up to 114 mph — not quite like the old days, but not too shabby, either.

She drove forehands to corners. She made her way to the net for crisp volleys. And when it was all over, the 41-year-old American celebrated her first Wimbledon match win since 2018 by raising her arms and yelling "Come on!" before reprising her familiar smile-and-twirl wave at No. 3 Court.

A five-time singles champion at the All England Club who is making her 23rd appearance there, Williams began her record-extending 90th Grand Slam tournament with her 90th career victory at Wimbledon, beating Mihaela Buzarnescu of Romania 7-5, 4-6, 6-3.

She became the fourth-oldest woman to win a Wimbledon singles match after Madeline (AE) O'Neill (54, 1922), Martina Navratilova (47, 2004) and Kimiko Date (42, 2013).

Williams is a former No. 1-ranked player who came into this week ranked 111th and having lost in the first or second round at the past eight majors.

"You can't win them all. Life is about how you handle challenges. Each point is a challenge on the court. No one gives you anything," said Williams, who was diagnosed a decade ago with Sjogren's syndrome, an autoimmune disease that can cause fatigue and joint pain. "I like to think I handle my challenges well."

Roger Federer also advanced despite losing two sets to French veteran Adrian Mannarino. The record eight-time Wimbledon men's singles champ evened the match at 6-4, 6-7 (3), 3-6, 6-2 before Mannarino retired with a leg injury.

The schedule on Day 2 of the tournament, like on Day 1, was jumbled by showers. At least 18 matches were postponed until Wednesday and a dozen were suspended in progress shortly after Williams finished off a victory that lasted more than 2 1/2 hours.

Her sister Serena, a seven-time Wimbledon champ, and Federer were assured of playing later Tuesday, because their matches were on Centre Court, which has a retractable roof.

Women's winners included 2018 champion Angelique Kerber, No. 1 seed Ash Barty, No. 8 Karolina Pliskova, No. 15 Maria Sakkari, two-time Slam finalist Vera Zvonareva, 2020 French Open semifinalist Nadia Podoroska and Americans Shelby Rogers, Madison Brengle and qualifier Claire Liu. Another U.S. woman, No. 28 seed Alison Riske, was beaten 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 by Tereza Martincova of the Czech Republic.

In men's action, 20-year-old American Sebastian Korda — whose father, Petr, won the 1998 Australian Open and whose sisters, No. 1-ranked Nelly and Jessica, are on the LPGA Tour — made a successful Wimbledon debut, eliminating No. 15 Alex de Minaur 6-3, 6-4, 6-7 (5), 7-6 (5).

No. 4 Alexander Zverev, No. 9 Diego Schwartzman and No. 26 Fabio Fognini also advanced.

Buzarnescu is a 33-year-old left-hander who has dealt with a series of injuries and has gone from the top 20 to outside the top 150.

"Both of us, we are not young anymore. She's got a few years in front of me," Buzarnescu said about Williams. "Really a lot of respect for her to be still playing at this age. And I'm really happy that as long as she can compete at this level, that she will continue, because she's an example for (all) tennis players."

Williams, who is entered in the mixed doubles competition with Nick Kyrgios, made her debut at Wimbledon in 1997. She won it for the first time in 2000 and most recently in 2008, the year she set the tournament women's record for fastest serve, 129 mph.

On this day, with strips of black tape around her left knee, serving helped Williams save 13 of 15 break points, including a trio in the final game.

On the first, Buzarnescu tried a lob that the 6-foot-1 (1.85-meter) Williams reached and turned into an overhead winner. Buzarnescu flipped her racket end over end and caught it. The next break chance ended with a backhand passing shot into the net. On the third, a powerful forehand from Williams forced an error, and Buzarnescu put her hands on her hips.

Two points later, it ended. One of Williams' sisters stood and shot the scene with her cellphone. Her mother, Oracene Price, simply sat in the stands, head resting on her left hand.

Someone who was rather demonstrative about hoping Williams would win: No. 21 seed Ons Jabeur of Tunisia, who earlier this month became the first Arab woman to win a WTA title.

When Jabeur did a video conference with reporters after winning her first-round match, Williams and Buzarnescu were beginning their last set. Whoever advanced would meet Jabeur, a 6-2, 6-1 winner against Rebecca Peterson.

"I'm praying for her to win right now. It's such an honor, privilege, everything, to play Venus," Jabeur said, smiling widely and holding up crossed fingers on both hands. "She's a legend and such an inspiration for me. I've watched her so many times. I love the way she fights. Honestly, it would be my dream to play her."

Jabeur said Williams "was kind enough to practice with me" recently and congratulated her for her barrier-breaking trophy.

"Such a nice person. … Very happy and supportive," Jabeur said. "I appreciate her a lot."

Later, Williams returned the compliments, calling Jabeur "one of my favorite people on tour."

"Honestly, she's just breaking down barriers," Williams said. "The first woman from her country to do anything that she's doing. … She's inspiring so many people, including me."

{blackbabes} Serena Williams out of Wimbledon with leg injury

Serena Williams withdrew from Wimbledon during her first-round match with a leg injury.

Williams had just been broken by Aliaksandra Sasnovich of Belarus to get back on serve in the first set at 3-2. She limped toward her chair, was looked at by a trainer and left the court during an injury timeout.

Williams, playing the whole match with her right thigh fully taped, returned and played one full game before retiring. Sasnovich won it. Williams was in tears to start the next game on serve, dropped to the court on the third point and retired.

Williams, 39, is a seven-time Wimbledon champion who reached the final in her last four appearances at the All England Club.

Williams, a 23-time Grand Slam singles champion, exited in the first round for the second time in 79 career majors (2012 French Open).

Naomi Ackie Zoe Kravitz Channing Tatum

In a highly competitive situation and the first major deal of the Cannes Virtual market, MGM has landed global distribution rights to Zoe Kravitz's directorial debut Pussy Island. The original film, written by Kravitz and E.T. Feigenbaum, will star Naomi Ackie alongside Channing Tatum. Bruce Cohen, Kravitz, Tiffany Persons and Tatum's Free Association will produce, with Garret Levitz overseeing for Free Association.

Deadline revealed the project last week, and Kravitz described to Deadline the role she'd written for the lead actress, she said it was one that she would have loved to be playing, if she wasn't directing. Ackie currently stars in season three of Aziz Ansari and Alan Yang's Master of None, on which she also serves as an Executive Producer. Ackie starred in the second season of Netflix's BAFTA winning End of the F*cking World.

Despite the epic setting, beautiful people, ever-flowing champagne and late-night dance parties, Frida can sense that there's more to this island than meets the eye. Something she can't quite put her finger on. Something terrifying.

Ackie also starred in J.J Abrams' Star Wars: Episode IX, The Rise of Skywalker. She received a British Independent Film Award in the category of Most Promising Newcomer, a nomination in the category of Best Supporting Actress and two UK National Film Award nominations in the categories of Best Supporting Actress and Most Promising Newcomer for her turn as Anna in William Oldroyd's Lady Macbeth. {blackbabes} 'Golden opportunity' awaits Serena at Wimbledon

(Reuters) - Opportunity knocks for Serena Williams on the grass courts of Wimbledon next week when she faces a diminished field on her best surface at the famous All England Club.

Williams, 39, continues her quest for a record-equalling 24th Grand Slam title but her inconsistency has left many to wonder if the hard-hitting American has the mental and physical strength to string together seven high quality matches.

"That's the question everybody's been asking," former world number one and 18-time Grand Slam champion turned ESPN analyst Chris Evert said on a call with reporters.

The combination of a fast surface that favours power hitters like Williams and a field in which rivals such as Ash Barty and Simona Halep are competing after injury plus Naomi Osaka missing for personal reasons, opens the door for Williams.

"This is to me her golden opportunity," Evert said.

"If there was ever a year that has looked good in the last few years, if there ever was a Grand Slam she is capable, more than capable, of winning... it would be this year's Wimbledon."

Other threats to Williams apart from top seed Barty and defending champion Halep, including Bianca Andreescu, Aryna Sabalenka, Barbora Krejcikova and Karolina Pliskova, have yet to establish themselves as great grass court players, Evert added.

"(But) there's always two sides to any coin. This new generation is fearless and confident."

Fearless and confident is an apt description of 17-year-old Coco Gauff, who took Wimbledon by storm in 2019 when she beat former champion Venus Williams en route to the fourth round, where she bowed out to eventual title winner Halep.

Gauff made the French Open quarter-finals this month and, even though her Wimbledon preparations suffered a blip when she lost to Anastasija Sevastova in a warm-up event on Wednesday, she is poised to take the next step in her young career.

"She has developed her skill set to another level during the clay court season," Evert said.

"She got better and better with each tournament. I think if her serve is on, she could very well get to the second week, even make a quarter or a semi, very possible at Wimbledon."

Former world number one John McEnroe echoed Evert's view.

"I think she could potentially absolutely get to late in the event, semis, finals. It's conceivable if things go well."

The Wimbledon main draw matches begin Monday.

{blackbabes} ‘The Upshaws’ Renewed For Season 2 By Netflix

Netflix has renewed multi-camera comedy series The Upshaws, from co-creators, executive producers and co-showrunners  Regina Hicks and Wanda Sykes, for a second season. In a vote of confidence to the blue-collar sitcom, starring Mike Epps, Sykes and Kim Fields, is has been picked up for a 16 half-hour episodes, expected to run in two batches of 8, an increase from the 10-episode first season.

"Wanda and Regina have created a fresh entry in the tradition of Black sitcoms that's real, relatable, full of heart and incredibly funny," said Tracey Pakosta, Netflix's Head of Comedy. "We're thrilled to see where they, along with their talented cast, take the Upshaws in the second season."

The Upshaws, which premiered on May 12, 2021, has been attracting awards attention. It has been a rare breakout for Netflix, which has struggled to get traction with multi-camera sitcoms as its development model does not include pilots whose role is often key for multi-camera comedies. Beside early success stories Fuller House and The Ranch, Family Reunion has been one of the brightest spots on Netflix's multi-cam slate where the majority of the shows have not gone beyond one season.

"We are so excited we get to bring this amazing show back for a second season," Hicks said. "And thankful that Netflix saw and felt all the love we got for this wonderful family. Looking forward to bringing more Upshaws' joy to all who fell in love with them."

Hicks, Sykes and Epps executive produce the series with Page Hurwitz and Niles Kirchner.

In The Upshaws, Bennie Upshaw (Epps), the head of a Black working class family in Indianapolis, is a charming, well-intentioned mechanic and lifelong mess just trying his best to step up and care for his family — wife Regina (Fields), their two young daughters (Khali Spraggins, Journey Christine) and firstborn son (Jermelle Simon), the teenage son (Diamond Lyons) he fathered with another woman (Gabrielle Dennis) — and tolerate his sardonic sister-in-law (Wanda Sykes), all without a blueprint for success. But the Upshaws are determined to make it work, and make it to the next level, together. Page Kennedy also stars.

{blackbabes} Kyra Sedgwick Directing Black List Script ‘Space Oddity’; Kyle Allen, Alexandra Shipp & Madeline Brewer To Star

Primetime Emmy winner Kyra Sedgwick is set to direct Rebecca Banner's 2016 Black List screenplay Space Oddity with Kyle Allen, Alexandra Shipp and Madeline Brewer starring. The pic reps Sedgwick's second feature directorial after Story of a Girl for which she received a DGA nomination. Space Oddity is set to begin production this month in Rhode Island.

Space Oddity tells the story of Alex (Allen) who, after giving up on Earth and deciding to leave it all behind for a one-way mission to Mars, develops an unexpected romance with Daisy (Shipp), the enigmatic town newcomer, which forces him to choose between an uncertain journey to the stars and an even more uncertain journey of the heart.

Brewer will play Liz, Alex's sister, who has reluctantly returned to the farm where she grew up.

The feature is the first movie Sedgwick and Valerie Stadler will be producing under their banner Big Swing Productions.

"As soon as I read Space Oddity, I knew this was a film I had to direct. This family is so beautifully flawed, so perfectly human. The humor and the heart jumped off the page. We started Big Swing to tell just this kind of story – one that centers on hope but never shies away from the struggle that makes us all part of this fragile experiment on Earth. And there is no better place to film this story than in the beautiful state of Rhode Island," Sedgwick tells Deadline.

Madeline-Brewer

Stadler will produce alongside Jack Greenbaum and Richard Arlook for the The Arlook Group and Mickey Schiff for Unique Features. EPs are Bob Shaye, Ibrahim AlHusseini, JL Pomeroy, Brent Emery, Susan Cartonis, Suzanne Farwell and Anne Clements.

Sedgwick starred and executive produced the TNT drama series The Closer, for which she received five Lead Actress Drama series Emmy noms, winning in 2010. She's an 8x Golden Globe nominee, and won Best Actress in a TV series Drama for The Closer in 2007. She has also directed episodes of Ray Donovan, Grace and Frankie, City on a Hill, and Brooklyn Nine-Nine, the latter of which she stars on as Chief Wuntch. She is represented by CAA, MGMT Entertainment, and Schreck Rose Dapello Adams Berlin & Dunham.

Allen recently starred in Amazon's The Map of Tiny Perfect Things, and will next be seen in Steven Spielberg's West Side Story for Amblin/20th Century Studios and Paramount's The In Between. Other recent credits include FX's American Horror Story: Apocalypse Now and Hulu's The Path. Allen is represented by UTA, Management 360, and Steve Warren.

Shipp stars as the female lead in Lin-Manuel Miranda's upcoming Netflix movie Tick Tick Boom, opposite Andrew Garfield. Shipp is best known for her role as the iconic mohawked super heroine Storm in Twentieth Century Fox's X-Men franchise and her role in the critically acclaimed film Love, Simon. Other recent feature credits include Warner Bros.' Shaft opposite Samuel L. Jackson, CBS Films' Jexi opposite Adam Devine, and All the Bright Places alongside Elle Fanning. Shipp is represented by CAA, Lisa Wright and Goodman Genow Schenkman, Smelkinson + Christopher.

Brewer has played Janine Lindo on 33 episodes of Hulu/MGM's multi-Emmy winning The Handmaid's Tale, in addition to Netflix's Orange Is the New Black as Tricia Miller. She also starred in the STX Jennifer Lopez-Constance Wu feature crime movie Hustlers. Brewer is a 3x SAG nominee in the Drama TV series ensemble category for Handmaid's Tale. {blackbabes} Ball in Serena's court at Wimbledon with rivals' fitness doubts

Serena Williams turns 40 on September 26 and the arrival of that landmark birthday will be all the sweeter if she has at last equalled Margaret Court's all-time record of 24 Grand Slam singles titles.

The tennis legend could even hold the record outright if she wins both Wimbledon and the US Open but despite holding her own in the top 10, there is a fear that age is impacting on her powers.

A fourth round loss at the French Open to Kazakh 21st seed Elena Rybakina reflected this although clay would be her least preferred surface despite three Roland Garros titles.

However, her chances of an eighth Wimbledon crown have improved with the withdrawal of world number two Naomi Osaka, who is taking time out of the game after revealing she has been battling anxiety and depression.

There are also fitness doubts over Australia's world number one Ashleigh Barty and third-ranked Simona Halep, who denied Williams the record-equalling Slam at Wimbledon two years ago.

That was one of four Grand Slam finals Williams has played since she drew within one title of the controversial Court's record at the 2017 Australian Open.

Fellow American tennis legend Chris Evert believes Williams is still capable of winning at Wimbledon where she has been the losing finalist on her last two visits.

"Like Roger Federer I would give Serena a better chance at Wimbledon because the grass is perfect for her game," Evert told Eurosport prior to the French Open.

"On the grass, if Serena is fit and that serve is working then that's half of the match right there.

"She has that experience and flexibility."

Evert, though, concedes that like any great champion who appears vulnerable all her opponents suddenly entertain hopes of beating her.

"The players are better now than they were two years ago and they are not intimidated," said the 66-year-old, 18-time Grand Slam singles champion.

"They all feel they have a chance against Serena."

- 'Going to have fun' -

Barty will go into Wimbledon without a warm-up tournament on grass after pulling out due to a hip injury in the middle of the second set of her second round match at the French Open.

The 25-year-old Australian has been practising on grass at Wimbledon labelling them "baby steps" as the 2019 French Open champion bids to be fighting fit.

Halep too will open her defence of the title -- Wimbledon having been cancelled last year due to the coronavirus pandemic -- without a match on grass under her belt.

The 29-year-old Romanian's calf injury forced her to miss the French Open and although she turned up for this week's Bad Homburg tournament she felt she was not fit enough to compete.

"My calf is not ready for a competition," she said.

"I will keep practising as I really want to be able to play at Wimbledon but for now I have to take care of my body and to see how the recovery is going."

Barbora Krejcikova is the form player after her surprise triumph in the French Open.

The 25-year-old Czech paid a moving tribute to her late compatriot and former coach Jana Novotna when she won at Roland Garros.

She might have to repeat it should she win at the All England Club, the venue where Novotna won her only singles Grand Slam crown in 1998.

One player who will remind spectators of what fun it was to watch tennis before coronavirus will be American teenager Coco Gauff.

As a 15-year-old she lit up the 2019 tournament both on and off the court after reaching the last 16 having come through the qualifiers.

Unlike Halep and Barty she is getting match practice in at the Eastbourne tournament this week.

Gauff, ranked 23 in the world, says the limelight might shine on her again at Wimbledon.

"People might expect me to feel pressure going into it, but I don't really feel any pressure," she said.

"I'm just going to have fun and enjoy it. I don't really want to push myself to compare my result this year with last time."
