{blackbabes} Beyoncé storage units robbed of $1 million in luxury goods

They need to put a better lock on it.

Thieves who recently hit Beyoncé's storage units in Los Angeles walked away with luxury handbags and dresses worth more than $1 million, according to a report.

Three storage units rented by the singer's Parkwood Entertainment production company were burglarized twice by thieves earlier this month, Los Angeles police said, according to TMZ.

Authorities told the entertainment news site most of the items in the lockers were owned by Beyoncé, who is the latest celebrity to have her storage units robbed. A storage space belonging to Miley Cyrus was hit in January. Thieves made away with clothes, photographs and other personal items, according to the LAPD. In 2018, a storage unit belonging to Cyrus in the San Fernando Valley was also hit and thieves made off with valuable guitars.

No arrests have been made in the Beyoncé burglary, according to TMZ.

{blackbabes} Essence Atkins, Tisha Campbell To Star In ‘Black Don’t Crack’ ABC Comedy Pilot; Tahj Mowry, Beth Grant & Isaiah Mustafa Also Cast

Essence Atkins Tisha Campbell

ABC is rounding out cast for multi-camera comedy pilot Black Don't Crack (fka Untitled Regina Hicks). Essence Atkins (Marlon) and Tisha Campbell (My Wife and Kids) are set as the two remaining leads opposite Sherri Shepherd, and Tahj Mowry (Baby Daddy), Beth Grant (Words on Bathroom Walls) and Isaiah Mustafa (It: Chapter Two) join as series regulars in the pilot from writer/executive producer Regina Hicks and exec producers Viola Davis & Julius Tennon and Larry Wilmore.

Black Don't Crack (fka Untitled Regina Hicks) follows three former sorority sisters, played by Shepherd, Atkins and Campbell, who lost touch after college and reunite during a pivotal point in their lives. They realize sometimes it's okay to crack and when you do, no one will be there for you like your friends.

Atkins will play Nia Hillis Davis. A bougie, conservative politician's wife who has lost touch with her more fun-loving college self. Though she may have many cracks in her perfect facade that she goes to great pains to cover up. While she may be perceived as uptight and snobbish, she's ultimately a lovable neurotic who is our voice of positivity, even if a lot of the times, she's not sure what's going on.

Campbell will portray Tasha Marks, a hip and fabulous Atlanta restaurateur who starts trends instead of following them. She holds nothing back and is brutally honest (sometimes to a fault) with her friends, but has been avoiding a truth in her own life. She's achieved the perfect professional life and insists that she needs no man in her life to interfere with the career she's worked so hard to create.

Mowry is Khalil Grant, Angela's (Shepard) 20 something son. He is a recent college grad who is full of big ideas and big dreams, but has yet to get any of his start-up companies off the ground. A bit of slow starter at life, he lives in his mother's basement and still relies on her to do his laundry and front him rent money. He is fiercely protective of his family and is gradually growing into a responsible adult.

Grant plays Nancy, Angela's (Shepard) sharp-tongued mother-in-law. She adores her grandson but is tougher on her daughter-in-law – she can be abrasive, demanding, and unaware of her prejudices. While Nancy can be a thorn in Angela's side, the truth is they need each other. At the end of the day, the things they share — the loss of a husband, their love for Khalil – keep them from killing each other.

Mustafa is Charles Daniels, co-owner with Tasha of a restaurant and bar in Atlanta. Charles is a former pro-football player who is handsome and oozes charm and swagger. He's full of stories from back in his glory days and is comfortable being the center of attention. He could be perceived as cocky, but he's ultimately the kind of dependable, good guy you want in your corner.

Shepherd plays Angela Wright, a native New Yorker somewhere between 45 and death, but it's hard to tell because "black don't crack." She's a single mom who put aside her musical dreams to raise her son after her husband died. She's been holding it down alone for years, taking care of her family instead of herself. When she is confronted with a personal crisis, she reunites with her sorority sisters to recapture the passion, ambition and sisterhood of their college glory days.

Kelly Parks directs the pilot. Shepard will produce. ABC Signature is the studio.

Atkins can next be seen in the BET+ series, First Wives Club, opposite Jill Scott. She can also be seen on Will Packer's OWN series Ambitions. She previously starred for two seasons opposite Marlon Wayans in NBC's Marlon. Additionally, she was a series regular on TBS' Are We There Yet? opposite Terry Crews. On the feature side, Atkins can recently be seen in a lead role in the independent feature, Same Difference. She's repped by Buchwald and manager Kathy McComb.

Campbell worked on Broadway from the age of 7 until she made her feature film debut in Spike Lee's School Daze opposite Lawrence Fishburne and Giancarlo Esposito. Her television series credits include Martin, My Wife and Kids for which she won a NAACP Award, and Last Man Standing. She's repped by TCA and Anthony Mulrain of Mintz, Levin Cohn, Ferris, Glovsky and Popeo.

Mowry starred on all six seasons of Freeform's hit series Baby Daddy. His other previous TV credits a recurring role on Full House, along with Friends, Sister, Sister, Disney animated series Aladdin and the Lion King, Desperate Housewives, The Game, Kim Possible and The Suite Life of Zach and Cody. He next will be seen starring in the title role in the upcoming comedy feature Welcome Matt. He's repped by Gilbertson Entertainment and Meyer & Downs

Grant recently co-starred with Charlie Plummer, Andy Garcia, Molly Parker and Walton Goggins in the romantic drama feature Words on Bathroom Walls. Upcoming Grant has a multi-episode arc on Amazon's Goliath. She also co-stars with Josh Leonard and Jess Weixler in Fully Realized Humans, premiering at Tribeca in April. Grant is repped by Buchwald.

Mustafa most recently played the lead role of Mike Hanlon in It: Chapter Two, and starred in Freeform's hit cult series Shadowhunters: The Mortal Instruments. He's repped by Paradigm, Megan Silverman Management, and Morris, Yorn, Barnes, Levine, Krintzman, Rubenstein, Kohner & Gellman.

{blackbabes} Whitney Houston was ‘conflicted’ by her sexuality: Rosie O’Donnell

Houston, she had a problem.

Rosie O'Donnell is speaking out about the tortured relationship songstress Whitney Houston had with her sexuality.

"Whitney was troubled by, I think, the gay part of her life and didn't want it exposed," O'Donnell said of the late music icon's rumored same-sex orientation.

In a wide-ranging discussion on the "Hot Takes & Deep Dives" podcast Monday, O'Donnell, 59, claimed the six-time Grammy Award-winning powerhouse was "conflicted" by her conservative cultural values and much-storied bisexuality.

"It's hard in black culture to accept gayness. It's culturally more difficult, I think," the openly gay actress said of Houston — who died in a drug-related accidental drowning at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in February 2012. She was 48.

"And the church … the Baptist Church weighed heavily on her," O'Donnell added, noting the rigid dichotomy between religion and homosexuality. "Growing up in the church and singing gospel, [for Houston] I think that there was a lot of conflict about that."

O'Donnell recalled meeting the "I Will Always Love You" chanteuse and her purported girlfriend, Robyn Crawford, at a party in New York.

She said that at the time, it was understood that Crawford, who was couched as Houston's childhood friend and personal assistant, was actually the megastar's "partner."

Crawford, 60, confirmed long-standing rumors of her hush-hush romance with the "Saving All My Love for You" singer in her 2019 memoir "A Song for You: My Life With Whitney Houston."

In the book, she said the pop diva ended their love affair to move forward as platonic gal pals when she signed a music deal with Arista Records in 1983.

Houston later married and divorced R&B musician Bobby Brown, who confessed that he knew his wife of 14 years was bisexual in his 2016 autobiography "Every Little Step: My Story."

Prior to her cocaine-linked death, Houston never confirmed her alleged queerness.

O'Donnell — who the "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" vocalist once endearingly referred to as her "Irish sister" — went on to discuss Houston's well-documented battle with addiction.

The Emmy Award-winning talk show host also talked about Houston pulling a no-show 45 minutes before the singer was to sit for an exclusive interview on her live daytime television program "The Rosie O'Donnell Show" back in the late 1990s.

"[Houston] was, at that time, really in a downward spiral with drugs, and it was obvious to anyone who was watching her," O'Donnell said on the podcast.

At the time, the troubled singer was set to promote her centerpiece portrayal of the Fairy Godmother in the 1997 television adaptation of "Rodgers & Hammerstein's Cinderella," starring Brandy Norwood. The film was rereleased on the Disney+ streaming platform last month.

"She didn't show up," O'Donnell said of Houston's last-minute cancellation, an infraction she attributed to the celeb's drug use. "So I said to her crew, 'This is all on all of you. Because when she dies, everyone is going to ask why you didn't do something.' "

O'Donnell said that later on, "Robyn … had written me and told me that was a very big day for them ― the crew around her ― to think that they had to make inroads to try to help her, and sadly, they didn't. Or couldn't."

O'Donnell will star in Season 2 of Showtime's "The L Word: Generation Q," set to air later this year.

{blackbabes} ‘All The Queen’s Men’: BET+ Reveals Cast, Sets Summer Premiere For Tyler Perry Studios’ Male Exotic Dancer Drama

All The Queen's Men

BET+ has revealed the cast for its male exotic dancer series All The Queen's Men, based off Christian Keye's book, Ladies Night, from Tyler Perry Studios. Eva Marcille, Skyh Alvester Black and Candace Maxwell are among the cast members who will bring Club Eden, the fictional home to the hottest and most sensual male exotic dancers in the country, to life. Raquel Palmer, Michael 'Bolo' Bolwaire, Keith Swift, Dion Rome, Jeremy Williams and Keyes round out the cast.

Set to drop exclusively on BET+ this summer, All The Queen's Men is a one-hour 10-episode drama that centers around the life of "Marilyn 'Madam' DeVille," played by Marcille. Madam is a fierce businesswoman who is at the top of her game in the nightclub industry and surrounded by a band of trusted employees who are down to make sure that she is successful. But Madam, a self-proclaimed boss, soon discovers that more money and more power means more problems. Will Madam retain reign as she navigates this dangerous and sexy society? Will the sensuous world of exotic dancing cost Madam her queendom and potentially her life?

Created by Keyes, who writes for and appears in the series, All The Queen's Men is one of the first shows from Tyler Perry Studios' scripted development arm, Pitch Black Development LLC, Headed by the studio's President of Production & Development, Michelle Sneed. The series received an episode order increase by BET+ from eight half-hour episodes to ten one-hour episodes with additional filming set to begin later this month at Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta.

Marcille's Madam (Marilyn Deville) is a savvy, powerful uncompromising businesswoman who owns a high-class male strip club that she runs fairly but with a firm hand; she's unafraid to do whatever it is she has to do to keep her business going.

Black stars as AMP "Addition Anthony", a dancer with a hidden past who has found difficulty getting hired after being released from prison, so he goes to work as a bouncer/doorman in Madam's club, Eden.

Maxwell will appear as  "DJ Dime" the resident DJ at Club Eden. She is ambitious and looks to Madam as a mentor.

Racquel Palmer acts as "Blue" Madam's chief of security. Blue is frequently seen at Madam's side when things get a little dicey.

Michael 'Bolo' Bolwaire Plays "Doc" one of the male strippers at Club Eden. Doc gets along well with his fellow dancers and a little too well with one of Eden's patrons.

Keith 'Fatal Attraction' Swift joins the cast as "Babyface", is the oldest dancer of the group, though he doesn't look it. He's questioning the number of days he has left at the club and his many client entanglements cause him plenty of drama.

Dion Rome is "El Fuego," one of the dancers at Madam's Club Eden who is a bit flirtatious with Madam. He loves who he loves and is quite the techy.

Jeremy 'Masterpiece' Williams joins as "Midnight" a confident and tough male stripper who sparks a different vibe in Madam than the other strippers. She enjoys him though it's hard to say how personal their relationship is.

Lastly, Keyes is "The Concierge", a calmly intense hitman, and member of the Damascus family, hired to blackmail Madam.

All The Queen's Men is executive produced by Michelle Sneed and Christian Keyes. Elon D. Johnson serves as co-executive producer for Tyler Perry Studios. Kim Fields Morgan directed the first four episodes of the series and also serves as consulting producer.

{blackbabes} Venus loses early at Miami Open

MIAMI — It has been 20 years since Venus Williams won her home tournament, and her stay at the 2021 Miami Open was brief.

Williams was eliminated on the first day of play Tuesday by 89th-ranked Zarina Diyas of Kazakhstan, 6-2, 7-6 (10).

The 40-year-old Williams, ranked 79th, was making her 21st appearance in the tournament, now held 75 minutes from her residence in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.

Williams' most recent title in the event came in 2001, when she beat Jennifer Capriati in the final. She also won the 1998 and 1999 titles.

Crowds were small for the first day of play, and will continue to be. Because of the pandemic, only 750 fans will be allowed on the grounds per session, and the 5,000-seat grandstand will be used for showcase matches.

Seeded players have first-round byes, including No. 1 Ash Barty, who can use the extra time to adjust her body clock. She arrived in Miami after a 45-hour trip from her native Australia.

"Brisbane-Sydney, Sydney to LA, LA on to Miami is usually quite an easy trip," Barty said. "We had a flight cancellation leaving Australia, and another flight cancellation when we got to LA. It was quite a wriggle-around."

Missing from the tournament are Serena Williams and the three players who have dominated men's tennis for years — Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. Djokovic decided against making the trip from Serbia, and the others cited health issues.

That creates an opening for the 20-somethings on the men's side who have long tried to break through in big tournaments.

"I won't lie — it is an opportunity," said Stefanos Tsitsipas, who is ranked fifth. "There are plenty of good guys that aren't in the top five that can play good tennis, as well. I can see them as a threat too."

{blackbabes} Tyler Perry Sets ‘A Jazzman’s Blues’ As Next Film At Netflix; Taps Joshua Boone And Solea Pfeiffer To Star

After teaming with Netflix on his most recent film A Fall From Grace, Tyler Perry is making his return to the streamer for his next film and has found his two leads in the process. Sources tell Deadline that Perry will direct A Jazzman's Blues, with Joshua Boone and Solea Pfeiffer on board to star. Perry will also write and produce the pic, with Michelle Sneed executive producing.

The film is a passion project for Perry that he has been trying to make for more than two decades and was the first screenplay he ever wrote — originally penning it 26 years ago. Set from 1937-87, the story follows an investigation into an unsolved murder unveiling a story full of forbidden love, deceit and a secret that has been held for 40 years. The film primarily will shoot at Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta and be released on Netflix this year.

"I have waited a quarter of a century to tell this story, and now is the perfect time and Netflix is the perfect partner," Perry said.

A Fall From Grace premiered in January 2020 and marked the first time Perry took his directing talents to the studio. Perry's films have grossed more than $1 billion at the North American box office. A Fall From Grace followed similar strong results with Netflix reporting that the film was seen by 39 million households in its first month.

For Boone and Pfeiffer, the film marks their biggest roles of their young careers. Boone's credits include IFC Films' Premature and the miniseries Seven Seconds. Pfeiffer's include Scandal and Curb Your Enthusiasm.

Perry is repped by WME and Ziffren Brittenham; Boone is with UTA; and Pfeiffer is repped by ICM Partners, Soffer/Namoff Entertainment and Peikoff Mahan.

{blackbabes} Halle Berry To Co-Star With Mark Wahlberg In Netflix’s ‘Our Man From Jersey’

After landing rights to her directorial debut, Netflix is looking to get back into business with Halle Berry. The streamer has set her to star opposite Mark Wahlberg in the thriller Our Man From Jersey. David Guggenheim penned the script, with Wahlberg and his partner Stephen Levinson producing.

Plot details are being kept under wraps, but the film is described as a blue-collar James Bond. Insiders say the plan is to shoot the film early next year in London.

The Oscar-winning actress added the title of director to her extensive filmography when her directorial debut Bruised premiered at the Toronto Film Festival, earning rave reviews for how impressive her work was for a first-time director and for her performance that impressed the festival circuit, especially Netflix. The streamer would end up paying eight figures for the rights, one of the largest at the 2020 festival. Besides Bruised, Berry was also recently seen in John Wick 3: Parabellum and has Roland Emmerich's Moonfall bowing this year.

She is repped by WME.

Swift and Beyoncé's friendship was rumored to have blossomed back in 2014 when they celebrated the "Love Story" singer's 25th birthday.

On Sunday, Swift — who donned in a ethereal floral dressthanked her longtime boyfriend Joe Alwyn in her acceptance speech.

"Joe, who is the first person that I play every single song that I write," she said. "I had the best time writing songs with you in quarantine."

Meanwhile, Beyoncé called her historic win "overwhelming," while thanking her children and her husband Jay-Z, calling him her "rock."

"I've been working my whole life since 9 years old and I can't believe this happened. This is such a magical night," Bey said.

{blackbabes} ‘The Girl Before’: ‘EastEnders’ Actress Jessica Plummer Joins HBO Max-BBC Series

Jessica Plummer

EastEnders actress Jessica Plummer has joined Gugu Mbatha-Raw and David Oyelowo in HBO Max and BBC One's limited series The Girl Before.

Deadline revealed the adaptation of JP Delaney's bestselling psychological thriller in January, and Plummer has signed up to play Emma in the series. It represents one of her first big roles outside of her work on BBC soap opera EastEnders.

The Girl Before follows Jane (Mbatha-Raw), a traumatized woman who falls in love with an extraordinary minimalist house, which remains under the spell of the architect (Oyelowo) who originally designed it. But when she discovers that another damaged woman died in the same One Folgate Street property three years earlier, she starts to wonder if her own story is just a rerun of the girl before.

Here's Emma's logline: "Fun loving and confident, Emma is stuck working at an unfulfilling marketing job, and is less than satisfied with her partner. For her, One Folgate Street's stone walls represent security, safety and renewal. But Emma is hiding a dark secret and, living in the pressure cooker that is One Folgate Street, the truth will out in the end."

42, the UK production outfit behind Netflix's The English Game and the Emmy-winning BBC-Netflix animation Watership Down, is behind the four-part series. Delaney himself is overseeing the adaptation of his 2016 novel, which has sold more than 1 million copies worldwide. Marissa Lestrade, a relative newcomer, is co-writing episodes after securing credits on shows including Fox's Deep State and BBC medical drama Casualty.

Emmy-nominated Killing Eve director Lisa Brühlmann will helm the series, while Rhonda Smith is the producer. ITV Studios is distributing. Executive producers include Eleanor Moran, Rory Aitken and Ben Pugh for 42, Ben Irving for the BBC, and Brühlmann.

Plummer was a contestant on the UK version of I'm a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here! last year.

{blackbabes} Angela Bassett To Narrate Wildlife Special ‘Malika The Lion Queen’ For Fox As Network Moves Into Natural History

Malika The Lion Queen

Fox is roaming into natural history with a two-hour special narrated by 9-1-1 star Angela Bassett. The network has ordered Malika the Lion Queen, a documentary about the lionesses of a pride in South Africa's Kruger National Park.

The special, which is produced by British production company Plimsoll Productions, the business behind Apple TV+'s Tiny World, will launch April 4 at 8 p.m. and will be available on Fox's AVOD streamer Tubi beginning April 18.

It marks the network's first move into the natural history genre – an area dominated by the BBC and cable networks such as Discovery and Nat Geo as well as increased moves by streamers such as Netflix and Apple. It comes as Fox is no longer a sister company to Nat Geo following the Disney deal and after NBC also dipped its toe into the genre with a 10-part series from BBC Studios Natural History Unit, the producers of Planet Earth and Blue Planet, due to air in 2024.

Malika the Lion Queen is exec produced by Tom Hugh-Jones, Martha Holmes and Grant Mansfield.

"We've long been exploring premium wildlife specials that present an entirely new world full of emotional and aspirational stories that appeal to all viewers. In Malika the Lion Queen, we've found everything we were seeking," said Rob Wade, Fox president of Alternative Entertainment & Specials, on Tuesday. "With Angela Bassett guiding viewers along with her hallmark grace and gravitas, coupled with mesmerizing footage captured by the Plimsoll team, Malika the Lion Queen is perfect evening entertainment for the whole family."

Bassett is repped by Gersh and Lighthouse Entertainment.

{blackbabes} Oscar Nominations: ‘Mank’ Tops List With 10 Including Best Picture; Six Other Films With Six; Female Directors Record Set – The Complete List

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences unveiled its nominations Monday morning for the 93rd Oscars, through Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Nick Jonas. AMPAS's David Rubin started the pandemic-delayed Oscars by validating Deadline's scoop that most of the event will be held in Union Station in downtown Los Angeles, with some of the event being held in the Dolby Theatre, its usual locale.

The nominations for the Oscars, which will hold its ceremony April 25 live on ABC, had its share of surprises, and the most noticeable thing is the diversity that is reflected in the Academy's efforts over several years to broaden the perspective of its voting members. Coming off the recent scandalous showing by the scandal-mocked HFPA for not even having a single voting Black member, it seems a step in the right direction.

As a result, this marked the first year that two women were nominated for Best Director – Nomadland's Chloé Zhao and Promising Young Woman's Emerald Fennell – alongside Another Round's Thomas Vinterberg, Mank's David Fincher and Minari's Lee Isaac Chung.

Zhao, who becomes the first woman of color to score a Director nom, also scored in the Adapted Screenplay and Editing categories, giving her a chance to win four total Oscars.

In Best Picture, Oscar chose eight aspirants: Sony Classics' The Father, Warner Bros' Judas and the Black Messiah, Netflix's Mank which led all nominees today with 10, A24's Minari, Searchlight Pictures' Nomadland, Focus Features' Promising Young Woman, Amazon's Sound of Metal and Netflix's The Trial of the Chicago 7.

The nominations reflected a year when theaters were mostly closed down by the pandemic and films viewed at home on streaming services, but they also reflect a trend that might well continue: an emphasis on diversity, and almost no chance that filmmakers, actors, writers and others of color will be ignored by a crusty, ancient voting body that once controlled who got recognized.

Check out the list of nominees below and stay with Deadline all day for analysis and reactions.
