{blackbabes} Janet Jackson tells Rock and Roll Hall of Fame to ‘induct more women’

Janet Jackson delivered a nostalgia-tinged speech after being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Her family members in the Jackson 5 were inducted in 1997, and her brother Michael was inducted as a solo artist in 2001.

"It was my father's dream. He wanted me to become this wonderful performer," Jackson said of the beginnings of her music career. "He encouraged me. He was the first one to encourage me. Music became my passion."

Jackson has had a storied career that inspired multiple generations of pop artists, from Britney Spears to Beyoncé to Janelle Monáe, who introduced Jackson on Friday. The youngest member of the Jackson family, she began performing on the Jackson 5's variety show, "The Jacksons," at just 7 years old. Not long after, she launched an acting career with roles on several hit sitcoms during the seventies, including "Good Times" and "Diff'rent Strokes."

Jackson launched her singing career in 1982 at age 18 with her self-titled, disco-leaning debut. Her real breakthrough, though, both artistically and commercially, was 1986's "Control." A powerful statement of independence, it immediately set the standard for how teen pop stars could transition to their more mature, adult careers. She had her first Number One single with "When I Think of You," and followed "Control" with the ambitious and impossibly influential "Rhythm Nation," a concept album that featured a record-breaking seven Top Five singles.

Read Jackson's full acceptance speech from her induction ceremony at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame below:

This is a big moment.

When I was kid my dream wasn't to be singer. I wanted to go to college and I wanted to be a lawyer.

It was my father's dream. He wanted me to become this wonderful performer. He encouraged me. He was the first one to encourage me. Music became my passion.

In 1997, my brothers were recognized for their musical passion by being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and I was so, so proud. As you saw in the clip, I was always crashing their rehearsals. I was always tagging along, always with my brothers.

I witnessed, along with the rest of the world, my family's extraordinary impact on popular culture. Not just in America, but all around the globe, the entire globe. As the youngest in the family, I was determined to make it on my own. I wanted to stand on my own two feet, but never in a million years did I expect to follow in their footsteps.

Tonight, your baby sister has made it in.

I didn't do this alone, though. There's a world of people that supported me along the way.

I want to begin by thanking my incredibly strong family, my wonderful mother and father, my sisters and my brothers. You guys never stopped believing in me.

In the early 80s, it was my father who took me to A&M Records when I was this unproven 14-year-old, Herb Alpert and Jerry Moss they had enough faith in me to give me a record deal. I'm forever to grateful to you and the entire A&M family, which includes you, Jesus Garber.

I also want to thank Angela Winbush, Rene Moore and Leon Sylvers. You guys were the first believers.

Two great men — Dick Clark and Don Cornelius — introduced me to this vast audience, and to all the program directors and the DJs all around the world: You supported me and my music for the past 37 years. You've made all the difference, and I thank you for that.

Jimmy [Jam] and Terry [Lewis], can you guys please stand up? In the mid-80s, you came to A&M Records and you were asked if there was any artist you would want to produce, who would it be? And you guys said Janet. That's a real story. You guys are my two dads and so much more. You are brilliant producers, incredible songwriters, wise teachers and my great friends. I salute you tonight for the body of work that we created together, but also for your contribution to the world of music. I love you guys.

I never thought I was a good dancer, but I loved the way dancing made my body feel. I have to thank all the choreographers I ever worked with, especially Paula Abdul, Anthony Thomas, Terry Bixler, Tina Landon and Gil Duldulao. I love you guys so much.

Janet Zeitoun, Wayne Lukas and Kevin Aucoin, Tara Posey, Fran Cooper — even when it was hard for me to look at myself in the mirror, you always guys made me feel so fabulous.

Questlove, you have been my biggest champion, thank you so much.

I have to thank my core JDJ team — Jessica Davenport, you were there over thirty years ago when I just started on Good Times; Jaime Mendoza and Terri Harris, you make my daily life run smoothly. Thank you so much.

I want to say a personal word to each and every fan. You've been with me every step of the way. In all my ups. All my downs. I never have and never will take you for granted. I love you with all my heart.

Thank you God for giving us life and the ability to embody goodness.

With God all is possible, and all is good.

And I want to thank my baby, my beautiful son. He wakes me up every single morning singing his own little melodies. He's only two, you guys. I want you to know that you're my heart, you're my life and you have shown me the meaning of real, unconditional love. Mama loves you, Eissa, rah rah rah. And Rock and Roll Hall of Fame please, 2020: Induct more women. Thank you so much.

{blackbabes} NAACP Image Awards: 2019 Winners

The NAACP Image Awards were held Saturday evening, with Black Panther, Black-ish and Beyonce all garnering big wins.

The star-studded ceremony took place at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood with Black-ish actor Anthony Anderson hosting the show, which was televised live on TV One.

Beyoncé was feted with the night's top honor, Entertainer of the Year, beating out Chadwick Boseman, LeBron James, Regina King, and Ryan Coogler. She made sure to acknowledge her fellow nominees while accepting the award.

"I'm honored to be included among all of you and to part of a vital, thriving, beautiful community," she said.

Black Panther took home the marquee Outstanding motion picture award, while Boseman was awarded the Outstanding Actor in a Motion Picture honor and Letitia Wright picked up the breakthrough performance award for the Disney/Marvel film.

On the TV side, ABC's Black-Ish led with a win for Outstanding comedy series, and acting awards for Anderson and Tracee Ellis Ross. Power was named Outstanding drama series, with Omari Hardwick and Empire star Taraji P. Henson nabbing awards for acting in the drama series categories.

During the broadcast, Congresswoman Maxine Waters (D-Los Angeles) was honored with the NAACP Chairman's Award, and brought the crowd to its feet with her impassioned speech about serving the nation.

"After a long career journey, tonight I stand before you as the first woman and the first African-American to chair the powerful U.S. House Financial Services Committee," she said. Yes, I got the gavel and I'm not afraid to use it."

Shawn "JAY-Z" Carter received the President's Award for distinguished public service. After taking a shot at President Donald Trump, the hip-hop mogul dedicated his award to the "beautiful women" in his life.

"I grew up believing I could do anything, that I could accomplish anything because of those strong women in my house," he said.

Radio legend Tom Joyner, host of the long-running Tom Joyner Morning Show, was honored with the Vanguard Award. During his acceptance speech, he announced that after 25 years on the TJMS "at the end of this year I'll be retiring from the radio."

"But the Tom Joyner Foundation will go on, and on, and on, to help students stay in school at historically Black colleges and universities," he added.

There were also several humorous moments, including when Chris Rock mocked embattled Empire actor Jussie Smollett, who recently saw the 16 felony disorderly conduct counts against him dropped by Chicago prosecutors.

"What a waste of light skin," Rock quipped. "You know what I could do with that light skin… my career would be out of here. I would be running Hollywood."

{blackbabes} Dozens Of Hollywood Actors Pledge To Battle Georgia Filming If “Heartbeat Bill” Passes

With "Hollywood" the industry so often stretching well beyond "Hollywood" the town – especially given that stretching increasingly reaches Georgia – about 50 actors including Amy Schumer, Amber Tamblyn, Alec Baldwin, Don Cheadle, Rosie O'Donnell, Patton Oswalt, Sarah Silverman, Essence Atkins, Uzo Aduba, Gabrielle Union, Christina Applegate, Ben Stiller, Sean Penn, David Cross, Mia Farrow, Colin Hanks and Bradley Whitford has signed a letter written by Alyssa Milano in opposition of the state's so-called "heartbeat" anti-abortion bill.

The letter was sent Thursday morning to Georgia House Speaker David Ralston and Georgia governor Brian Kemp, but has been circulating on social media all day.

"This dangerous and deeply-flawed bill mimics many others which have already been deemed unconstitutional," the letter states (read it in full below). "As men who identify as small-government conservatives, we remind you that government is never bigger than when it is inside a woman's body or in her doctor's office. This bill would remove the possibility of women receiving reproductive healthcare before most even know they are pregnant and force many women to undergo unregulated, hidden procedures at great risk to their health."

The Georgia bill would ban most abortions after six weeks from conception (or, as the nickname suggests, when a "heartbeat" can be detected). The Georgia House of Representatives has yet to vote on the bill; Kemp is expected to sign it if and when the House passes it.

The letter signers vow to "do everything in our power to move our industry to a safer state for women if H.B. 481 becomes law."

Here is the letter:

The signees are:

{blackbabes} Taraji P. Henson Talks Jussie Smollett's Dropped Charges: 'The Truth Prevailed'

Jussie Smollett Taraji P Henson Charges Dropped Reaction

Jussie Smollett's on-screen mother said she never believed he orchestrated a hate crime against himself and expressed joy Tuesday that all charges against her Empire co-star had been dropped.

"I'm happy that the truth has finally been set free, because I knew it all along," Taraji P. Henson told USA Today. "We're all happy for him, and thank God the truth prevailed."

On March 8, a grand jury indicted Smollett on 16 felony counts related to an alleged attack he suffered in January. Smollett reportedly told police that two men approached him and began hurling racist and homophobic slurs at him, then placed a noose around his neck and doused him with a chemical substance, believed to be bleach. Smollett also told police that the assailants "yelled pro-'Make America Great Again' [MAGA] comments" during the attack.

Later, though, Smollett's account came into question after police talked to two suspects — brothers, one of whom worked on a music video of Smollett's — who were released without being charged. Smollett pleaded not guilty on March 14, and he was scheduled to appear in court on April 17. Meanwhile, Empire removed Jamal from the final two episodes of the current season, and the show's Powers That Be considered removing the character from the series altogether.

Henson was vocal about her support for Smollett immediately following the incident in Chicago.

After the charges were dropped Tuesday, she cited "his track record" as the reason her faith in him hadn't wavered throughout his legal woes. "I'm not going to jump on clickbait just because someone says something derogatory about a person I know and love," she said, adding, "I know the type of activism this young man does in his community, I know that he's a giver — he's not an attention-seeker."

Henson also said she had not spoken to Smollett since the charges had been dropped, and she was unaware about whether or not he would return to Empire.

{blackbabes} Tiffany Haddish To Curate Diverse Stand-Up Series ‘Tiffany Haddish Presents: They Ready’ For Netflix

Tiffany Haddish is doubling down on the laughs with Netflix after scoring a series of curated stand-up specials. The Girls Trip star is hosting Tiffany Haddish Presents: They Ready, featuring six comedians personally chosen by Haddish. Each episode is a half-hour and exec produced by Haddish, Wanda Sykes and Page Hurwitz.

Comedians include Chaunté Wayans (50 Shades of Black), April Macie (Snoop Dogg's Bad Girls of Comedy), Tracey Ashley (The Last O.G.), Aida Rodriguez (Last Comic Standing), Flame Monroe (Def Comedy Jam) and Marlo Williams (Comicview).

Haddish shares a history with each of them after working together on the stand-up scene or in television. She believes that the industry often excludes women, people of color, and LGBTQ performers and as such wants to put this diverse group of comedians in the spotlight.

It is Haddish's latest project for the SVOD service, having already set up her own comedy special and leant her voice to forthcoming series Tuca & Bertie from the BoJack Horseman team.

Tiffany Haddish Presents: They Ready will be produced by Push It Productions, the company run by Sykes and Hurwitz, which is producing Sykes' own Netflix special, and Haddish executive produces through She Ready Productions.

Haddish said, "I am introducing six of my favorite comedians – in my eyes, they are superstars. The epitome of They Ready."

Haddish is repped by UTA, Artists First and Del Shaw Moonves.

{blackbabes} Halep swats Venus in Miami

Miami (AFP) - Simona Halep got the better of Venus Williams once again as the Romanian made light work of the 38-year-old American to book a place in the Miami Open quarter-finals with a 6-3 6-3 triumph.

Halep, the highest seed left following Naomi Osaka's exit on Saturday, has now won her last four meetings with Williams, their previous encounter before clashing at Hard Rock Stadium coming earlier this year at the Australian Open.

The world number three and number two seed for the tournament triumphed in straight sets in Melbourne and it was more of the same in Miami as the world number 43 was overpowered by Halep.

At the culmination of the first set, Williams had won just 52% of points on her first serve and hit only four winners to Halep's 20 - the Romanian finished with 30 compared to 13 from Williams and won 75% on her own first serve.

"I'm really happy with my game and the numbers back that up," said a delighted Halep on court afterwards.

"She never gives up, she fights for every ball so I tried to keep her close to the baseline."

Williams' serve deserted her in a first set which saw the reigning French Open champion establish an early 3-0 lead and although the American responded with her own break soon after, she was unable to back it up.

Halep's best performance in South Florida came in 2015 when she was runner-up to Serena Williams, and with China's Wang Yafan or Wang Qiang waiting in the last eight, the 27-year-old will fancy her chances of another run to Saturday's final.

Hsieh Su-Wei, meanwhile, continued her excellent form with a 6-3, 6-7 (0/7) 6-2 win over Caroline Wozniacki and will play Anett Kontaveit after Canada's Bianca Andreescu retired with a shoulder injury in the second set.

In season two, the U.S. is fully engaged in World War II, transforming Jack's rocketry work into a lucrative business and further entrenching him in the military-industrial complex. Brown will play Betty, a 1940's jazz singer who seeks love and freedom in the open arms of Jack Parsons' (Reynor) cult. Brown recent TV credits include guest roles on Sorry For Your Loss, Scandal and Grey's Anatomy. She is repped by Stewart Talent and JC Robbins Management.

"From Phil Donahue speaking at the first Awards in 1990 to Cher surprising her son Chaz after he transitioned in 2012, to the message that Beyoncé and Jay-Z will send to LBGTQ people of color this year, the GLAAD Media Awards inspire and empower. This year's star-studded events will reflect on how LGBTQ images in the media moved culture forward over the last 30 years and will celebrate the next generation of diverse LGBTQ creators, actors, and storytellers who are raising the bar at a critical time in our community and our country." This adds to an already robust roster for this year's L.A. ceremony which will be hosted by Ross Mathews. The Bey hive was buzzing earlier this month when it was announced that Beyonce and Jay-Z will receive the Vanguard Award, which recognizes allies who have made a significant difference in promoting acceptance of LGBTQ people. In addition, Emmy-winning Will & Grace actor Sean Hayes will be honored with the Stephen F. Kolzak Award.

Lizzo's hits such as "Boys", the aforementioned "Juice" and her latest bop "Tempo" with legend Missy Elliott have become musical anthems which are leaving bread crumbs to her debut album Cuz I Love You. She has appeared on HBO's 2 Dope Queens with Phoebe Robinson and Jessica Williams as well as the Ellen DeGeneres Show and NBC's The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. She is an outspoken LGBTQ ally and has been a beacon of body positivity and female empowerment. Other guests scheduled to appear at the ceremony include Allison Janney, the cast of Netflix's Queer Eye, Nico Santos, Jameela Jamil, Shangela, Gigi Gorgeous, and Dan Reynolds of Imagine Dragons.

The L.A. ceremony will be followed by the GLAAD Media Awards ceremony in New York City on May 4 where Madonna will receive the Advocate for Change Award and Sarah Jessica Parker will present the Vito Russo Award to Andy Cohen. Additional special guests for the New York City event include Don Lemon, Samantha Bee, and cast members of Pose.

{blackbabes} Venus advances, Stephens falls at Miami Open

A day after her sister withdrew from the tournament with a knee injury, Venus Williams moved on to the Round of 16 of the Miami Open after beating 14th-seeded Russian Daria Kasatkina 6-3, 6-1 on Sunday.

Williams needed just 74 minutes to clinch victory, as Kasatkina struggled mightily with her serve. She had six double faults and won just 17 of 54 points on her own service, failing to win a single service game. Williams converted all eight of her break-point opportunities.

"I didn't realize that [she broke serve in every game] until after the match looking at the stats," Williams said afterward, per WTA.com. "I've never had a match before like that in my life. There's always a time for a first."

Williams had her own issues serving, as she was broken on each of her first three service games, including a 19-point slog in the third game. But she stabilized in the second set, allowing just one break.

"I'm returning really well," Williams said. "If I'm getting a look at the serve, it's going well for me. I want to return that well tomorrow, too."

Williams will next face second-seeded Romanian and former world No. 1 Simona Halep, who battled back to down Slovenia's Polona Hercog 5-7, 7-6 (1), 6-2 on Sunday. Williams and Halep have met six times before, splitting the matches 3-3, most recently with a straight-sets victory from Halep at the Australian Open.

In Sunday's final match, fourth seed and defending champion Sloane Stephens was ousted by Germany's Tatjana Maria 6-3, 6-2.

Maria broke Stephens five times, including three times in four service games in the second set. She ultimately put the match away on her fourth match point, the 13th point of the eighth game of the set.

"I could not be happier right now," Maria said in an on-court interview after winning. "I think I played at home, because I live here. It was helping me a lot.

"My game is pretty special, so I knew that tonight I had a chance. I played two times against Sloane, so I knew what to expect."

In other seeded action, No. 5 Czech Karolina Pliskova avoided an upset, recovering to beat Frenchwoman Alize Cornet 6-7 (3), 6-1, 6-4.

Latvian 11th seed Anastasija Sevastova wasn't as fortunate, blowing an early advantage to lose 1-6, 6-2, 6-3 to Yulia Putintseva of Kazakhstan. Also losing were Belgian 16th seed Elise Mertens -- 6-4, 7-6 (1) to Czech Marketa Vondrousova -- and American 25th seed Danielle Collins, who fell 7-5, 6-1 to China's Yafan Wang.

{blackbabes} 2 BECOME 1: Mel B says she once had sex with fellow Spice Girl Geri Horner

Mel B let slip that she's had sex with Spice Girls bandmate Geri Horner during a candid chat with Piers Morgan.

The 43-year-old singer, who has previously come out as bisexual, made the stunning admission while filming an interview for Piers' Life Stories series.

The mother-of-three confessed Geri had "great boobs", and said of the tryst: "It just happened."

According to British newspaper The Sun, Mel was forced to make a frantic phone call to Geri to apologize for the confession, amid claims the revelation about their past may upset her husband, Christian Horner.

Discussing her time in the world famous girlband, who first formed in 1994, Mel went into great detail about her relationship and friendship with mum-of-two Geri.

"We were best friends. It just happened. She (Geri) is going to hate me for this because she is all posh in her country house and her husband, but it's a fact. It just happened and we just giggled at it and that was it," the former America's Got Talent judge told Piers, before insisting that they only had sex once.

"This is a bombshell. A Spice Girls bombshell. You have never admitted this before have you? People are going to be fascinated!" a shocked Morgan said.

Joking that Geri's husband Christian was going to kill her for sharing the news of their saucy romance, Mel replied: "Yeah and I have said it now. All done. She is going to kill me and so is her husband.

"Hopefully when Geri gets asked that, which hopefully she will after this, she won't deny it, because it was just a thing, a fun thing."

Spice Girls bandmate Mel C, who was in the audience, was said to be "visibly horrified" at Mel's revelation, according to The Sun.

{blackbabes} Serena Williams withdraws from Miami Open due to knee injury

MIAMI — Serena Williams made another sudden tournament exit, this time blaming a previously undisclosed left knee injury.

Williams withdrew Saturday from the Miami Open, an unexpected move because she showed no signs of injury while winning her opening match a day earlier against Rebecca Peterson, 6-3, 1-6, 6-1.

Williams didn't mention any problems with the knee during a news conference after the match, and the WTA had no information regarding when she was hurt. She wasn't scheduled to play Saturday.

Her stay at the tournament was also brief last year, when she lost in the first round to Naomi Osaka. Friday's match was Williams' first since she retired at Indian Wells two weeks ago because of a viral illness.

Williams, 37, has played only eight matches this year. She hasn't won a tournament since the 2017 Australian Open, before she took a break of more than a year to become a mom.

The victory Friday was Williams' first in Hard Rock Stadium, the Miami Dolphins' home and the tournament's new centre court. The Miami Open moved this year from Key Biscayne, where Williams won eight titles.

She was next scheduled to play No. 18-seeded Qiang Wang, who advances to the fourth round.

"I am disappointed to withdraw," Williams said in a statement. "It was an amazing experience to play at Hard Rock Stadium this year, and I would like to thank the Miami Open for putting on an amazing event. I hope to be back next year to play at this one-of-a-kind tournament in front of the incredible fans here in Miami."

Williams happens to own a small share of the Dolphins, and she took part in this week's ribbon-cutting ceremony.

{blackbabes} Serena Williams, Naomi Osaka win opening matches at Miami Open

MIAMI — Eight-time champion Serena Williams won her opening match Friday at the new site of the Miami Open by beating Rebecca Peterson 6-3, 1-6, 6-1.

Williams played poorly for a stretch and was broken three times but steadied her game in the final set to pull away. She avoided a repeat of last year, when she was eliminated in her first match by Naomi Osaka.

The No. 1-ranked Osaka beat qualifier Yanina Wickmayer 6-0, 6-7 (3), 6-1. Osaka hit 14 aces and overcame a ragged stretch in the second set, when she became so frustrated she threw her racket.

"I had a bit of a dip," Osaka said. "It was really hard for me, I think, emotionally in the second set, because I just started thinking about winning, not exactly the things I could do in order to win."

The tournament moved this year from Key Biscayne to the Miami Dolphins' stadium complex, and Williams and Osaka took part in the ribbon-cutting ceremony Wednesday.

Both found the mix of sun and shadows in the cavernous stadium a challenge. Williams struggled to see the ball on at least a couple of points, shielding her face with her left hand as she approached shots.

Osaka confirmed the sun was an issue against Wickmayer in the unfamiliar setting.

"It's a little bit tricky to get used to it," Osaka said. "I think for me it got better as time went on. I found comfort in knowing she also was in the same conditions. It's not something that I should really be complaining about."

Defending men's champion John Isner hit 20 aces, lost only 11 points on his serve and beat qualifier Lorenzo Sonego 7-6 (2), 7-6 (7).

No. 5-seeded Kei Nishikori was upset by Dusan Lajovic 2-6, 6-2, 6-3. Lajovic improved to 3-14 against top-10 players.

No. 16 Gael Monfils, who has been hampered by an Achilles injury, withdrew before his opening match.

In other women's play, Canadian 18-year-old Bianca Andreescu, who overcame a match point to win her opening match, reached the third round by beating No. 32 Sofia Kenin 6-3, 6-3. Andreescu won her first career title last week at Indian Wells.

Three-time champion Venus Williams overcame a wobbly start to beat No. 24 Carla Suarez Navarro 7-6 (4), 6-1.
