The overall economic impact of the U.K.'s Brexit vote is still uncertain, but this weekend it became very real for US tennis star Serena Williams, who saw a major blow to her Wimbledon prize money.
After beating Angelique Kerber by 7-5, 6-3 in Saturday's women's final, the tennis ace will claim the £2 million winning prize, the equivalent of $2.592 million at Sunday's exchange rate.
However, had the tournament happened just before the U.K.'s Brexit vote on June 23, Williams would have walked away with $2.9742 million in prize money, meaning she's missed out on $382,200 because of the pound's slide. Since the referendum, sterling GBPUSD, +0.1776% has stumbled almost 14% to trade around a 31-year low.
The now seven-time Wimbledon champion also lost out on about $33,000 in prize money after winning the women's doubles title with her sister Venus.
But Serena's equalling Steffi Graf's 'Open Era' record of 22 Grand Slam titles seemed to soften the blow of the smaller money pot.
"It's obviously a great relief," she said after the win.
"I have, yeah, definitely had some sleepless nights, if I'm just honest, with a lot of stuff. Coming so close. Feeling it, not being able to quite get there. My goal is to win always at least a slam a year. It was getting down to the pressure," she said.
The men's Wimbledon winner Andy Murray, however, had every reason to celebrate his win. Living in the U.K., he won't have to worry about the pound slump and can instead cheer the 6.4% increase in this year's prize money. That's of course, unless he fancies a shopping spree the eurozone or the U.S. over the summer.
