The actress tells Adweek in her April cover interview that the Scandal creator rarely gives her a heads-up when something major is happening with Olivia Pope (like those kidnapping or abortion scenes).
"I had no idea that the abortion scene was coming until I turned the page at the table read and read it out loud with everybody else," Washington told Adweek. "There are occasional moments when she'll give me a hint about something that's coming, but it's very, very rare."
And Washington is okay with that: she has no interest in signing on as a producer and understands Rhimes' is in the drivers seat. "I show up and try to bring it to life," Washington explained.
She did, however, beef up her production skills for HBO's upcoming Anita Hill film Confirmation – something she's been wanting to do "for some time."
"I want to have more creative control over the things that I do, and not be victim to the whims of other people's desires," Washington explained of producing Confirmation.
The similar setting between her ABC show and the story of Hill's face-off with Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, isn't lost on Washington.
Real world politics also crossed over into Washington's onscreen life earlier this year, when actual presidential candidate Hillary Clinton stopped by the Scandal set. The actress said the high-profile visit happened because of her own affiliation with the campaign.
Of the former Secretary of State's visit with the messy Grant administration, Washington called it "very surreal."
"At some point you couldn't tell the difference between our pretend Secret Service on the show, and the real Secret Service walking on the set."
