Can't a man and a woman just be friends?
It sounds like something Carrie Bradshaw might ask herself at the beginning of a Sex and the City episode, but it's also the question on some minds after Mariah Carey and director Brett Ratner were spotted spending their birthday weekends together.
Carey, who celebrated her birthday (or as she prefers to call it, "anniversary") on Friday, and Ratner, born exactly one day after Carey, have long been friends but their relationship has raised some eyebrows since Carey's husband Nick Cannon filed for divorce in December.
"Hanging out in the girls room with @brettrat," Carey captioned an Instagram photo of her and Ratner on March 5.
"I love these ladies @mariahcarey and @courtneylove!" Ratner – who has directed several of Carey's music videos including "We Belong Together", "Heartbreaker" and "Touch My Body" – Instagrammed along with a photo of Carey and Courtney Love on March 24.
But even though the two were spotted together in Miami on Friday, Ratner's rep tells PEOPLE that any report that Carey and Ratner are dating is "ridiculous."
"They have been best friends for a very long time," the rep says.
