We admire Nicole Richie's ability to wear everything from a jumpsuit and a bralette to spray-painted silver hair and a beaded gown, but there's one person who prefers when she keeps it simple: her husband.
"I have found that men don't like too many bells and whistles," the star tells PEOPLE of Joel Madden's opinion of his wife's style. "They're not into hats or red lipstick. They're more drawn to simplicity… and a short skirt. Shocker."
It's that sense of humor, which she delightfully displays on her AOL series #CandidlyNicole, and her fun-loving approach to style that makes us want to abide by Richie's fashion philosophy.
"Take risks because that's what makes it fun," she shares. "Fashion is the ultimate form of self-expression," [Using] different fabrics and constructions, it's all part of this game of dress up that we, on some level, are all playing."
Experimentation with clothes started a young age for Richie, thanks in part to her dad, Lionel, who took her to The Grammys for what she says is her most memorable red carpet moment. "I was 4 years-old [coincidentally a year younger than her daughter Harlow is now] and my father's costume designer made me a dress out of the excess fabric of one of his stage costumes," Richie explains. "It's safe to say I stole the show that year."
Catch Richie still stealing the show –and enjoying time with Lionel Richie –on the latest #CandidlyNicole episode: Day With Dad.
