{blackbabes} Halle Berry: Gabriel and I Love Our Daughter 'More Than Life'

It appears the worst might be over for Oscar-winner Halle Berry and Gabriel Aubry, who have recently been engaged in a custody battle over their daughter Nahla, 3.

"When there's a child involved, it's a relief when you can resolve things in a good way," the actress, who revealed that court proceedings have gone well without detailing the exact agreement, tells Extra.

"Our issues were never about fighting for her," Berry says of Nahla. "We both know a child needs both her parents. But what I want to say about it is sometimes, as a couple, you reach an impasse. We needed a court and a judge to help us work out some of the delicate issues, and I'm so happy we've arrived at that place – because for her sake, this is the best way. We both love her more than life." 

While Berry recently pulled out of starring in this fall's Broadway production of Mountaintop, costarring Samuel L. Jackson as Martin Luther King, Jr., a source close to the actress tells PEOPLE it was not a result of her custody battle, as previously reported.

"She didn't pull out of the play because of custody issues," says the source. "She had a conflict of work." Berry would have taken on the role of Camae, a maid at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tenn.

Of her custody battle, the source adds: "Halle was never going for full custody. That wasn't what it was about. Whatever the outcome, she wasn't trying for that. There were just other issues that they couldn't resolve and therefore the courts had to intervene."

The pair split last April and then Aubry, a French-Canadian model, filed court papers on Dec. 30 seeking formal recognition as Nahla's father and joint legal and physical custody.

In January, Berry's rep issued a statement saying, "Halle has serious concerns for her daughter's well-being while in the care of her father for any extended period of time."

A rep for Aubrey, 34, soon responded. "The fact is that Gabriel is a caring father who shares custody of Nahla," the statement read.

Berry now admits all the back-and-forth hasn't been easy.

"It's been a year full of challenges," she told Extra.
