{blackbabes} ‘Beyond the Gates’ Shakes Up Daytime Television With Passionate Same Sex Love Scene

https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-features/beyond-the-gates-shaking-up-daytime-tv-sex-scene-1236298466/

Two young Black women sharing an intimate night of passion is not the typical soap opera sex scene. For Beyond the Gates executive producer Sheila Ducksworth, the storyline between Chelsea Hamilton (RhonniRose Mantilla) and her current love interest Dr. Madison Montgomery (Kenjah McNeil) on the CBS daytime series that launched this year is no click-bait ploy or Pride Month pandering. Instead, she says it's emblematic of the soap's DNA.

"It was really important that we have true representation on the show, and that's across all lines," she tells The Hollywood Reporter. For Ducksworth that includes sexuality, but also goes beyond it.

That's a bold move considering how unlikely the show's mere existence is. With less than a handful of broadcast network soaps still airing, Beyond the Gates is the first new soap since Passions premiered in 1999. It is also the first-ever soap revolving completely around Black characters. The short-lived Generations that premiered back in 1989 only featured a Black family.

Developed through a unique content partnership between CBS Studios and the NAACP, the nation's oldest civil rights organization, that Ducksworth spearheads and produced in partnership with P&G Studios, a division of longtime soap sponsor Procter & Gamble, Beyond the Gates, created by soap veteran Michele Val Jean, is set in an affluent D.C. suburb in Maryland and revolves around the Dupree family headed by civil rights hero and former senator Vernon (Clifton Davis) and his wife Anita (Tamara Tunie), a former singer who is an EGOT. The hit soap has been renewed for a second season.

Their family tree includes their two daughters, Dani Dupree Hamilton (Karla Mosley), a former model, and Nicole Dupree Richardson (Daphnée Duplaix), a psychiatrist; their romantic partners, children, friends and associates. Dani's daughter Chelsea Hamilton, portrayed by Mantilla, is a successful recently retired model, a top influencer and an aspiring handbag designer whose sexuality became a topic of high interest over the last month.

It didn't begin that way, Mantilla tells The Hollywood Reporter. "When the casting call first came out, I knew that she was a model. I knew she was young, closer to my age. I'm 25 so she's 23, Gen Z, an influencer and very into social media," she explains. "I knew that she was trying to find her own way and figure out her own path. The subject of her queerness didn't really come in until I met in person with [executive producers] Julie [Hanan Carruthers] and Sheila [Ducksworth]. And I was just so game for it."

Mantilla admits to welcoming the character arc for both philosophical and personal reasons. "I think art should be a reflection of the current times. And personally, I'm figuring out my queerness as well. So it's really been a fun journey to tell Chelsea's story," she shares.

Reflecting the times is mandatory for Beyond the Gates, Ducksworth believes. "We're the first [soap] of the millennium, so we're looking at things from a very contemporary point of view, and we really embrace that."

Chelsea has so many qualities the St. Louis native enjoys. "She's very bold in her approach. She goes after what she wants," Mantilla explains. "I feel female characters rarely get [that opportunity] and have to be the prey and not the hunter."

Still, her intimate scene with McNeil, who portrays Dr. Montgomery, was nerve-wrecking. "It was my first on-screen intimacy scene, so I was kind of terrified," the St. Louis native admits. "The importance of this [storyline] kind of helped me get over my fear. We haven't seen this in daytime before, and it's not just sex, but making love and having a connection."

The crew also felt the importance of the moment she shares. "The cameramen were super respectful, and on set was very quiet just so it felt like something deeper."

Shaking up viewers' perspectives is intentional. "People are not put in any boxes whatsoever," Ducksworth says of Beyond the Gates' many characters. "Some folks who are watching may have a view of 'that's not what a typical Black person is or does. That's not what a typical Latinx person is or does. That's not what a typical white person might do or be.' We're looking to really flush out these characters beyond something that feels one-dimensional because nobody is one-dimensional."

Just like her older cousin Martin (Brandon Claybon), who is a congressman with a husband and two teenagers, Chelsea isn't frozen in her sexuality. In addition to pursuing new heights professionally and working hard not to tarnish the Dupree family name while still maintaining her freedom, Chelsea's also a young woman dealing with the emotional fallout of her prominent father divorcing her mother to marry her older sister's one-time bestie who may be having her little brother or sister.

As a social media influencer and former model, Chelsea also has a carefree side that Mantilla enjoys. "I feel like a Barbie or, honestly, more like a Bratz doll because Chelsea is just so funky and she wears pieces I've never seen," she shares.

"Chelsea and I have different styles, but it's been so fun. And not just with the wardrobe, but also with hair and makeup. We're always talking and trying to collaborate," she says of the glam squad, "and see how far we can really go, and what trends we can set."

How Beyond the Gates is handling Chelsea's relationship with Madison outside of their intimate connection is also refreshing. Chelsea and Madison are more than a hook-up, with the writers characterizing their fast and easy chemistry as love at first sight. Sexuality played no role in Chelsea's introduction of Madison to her grandfather Vernon Dupree (Davis), a former senator who comes from a completely different generation. Instead, he, like the audience, questioned the speed of their relationship.

"It's important to show these stories because maybe someone who's trying to figure out their queerness can see Chelsea and Madison and be inspired to live out loud or to make that jump into committing to someone that they've been eyeing for a while," Mantilla says.

Beyond the Gates airs weekdays at 2:00 p.m. ET/1:00 p.m. PT on CBS, streaming live on Paramount+ and available On Demand.

{blackbabes} ‘Outer Banks’ Ups Duo To Series Regulars, Confirms 2026 Return As Season 5 Starts Production & First-Look Photo Hints At New Pogues Dynamic

It's official — the fifth and final season of Netflix's hit YA adventure series Outer Banks will debut in 2026. The streamer confirmed the premiere year in an announcement that production on Season 5 has begun in Charleston, SC. The press release revealed that Cullen Moss, who has recurred since Season 1 as Deputy and subsequently Sheriff Shoupe, and J. Anthony Crane, introduced in Season 4 as JJ's (Rudy Pankow) biological father Chandler Groff, have been promoted to series regulars for the final season, hinting at where the story may be headed.

The start-of-production announcement includes two first-look cast images from the new installment, and they reveal a potential new configuration of the Pogues following the shocking death of JJ (Pankow) at the end of the Season 4 finale.

One of the images features Chase Stokes (John B.), Madelyn Cline (Sarah), Madison Bailey (Kiara), Jonathan Daviss (Pope), Drew Starkey (Rafe) and Carlacia Grant (Cleo). It closely resembles the Season 4 key art which featured the Pogues sextet, with Starkey stepping in for Pankow. (The second image includes the five surviving Pogues from Season 4.)

The new photo confirms speculation about Starkey's larger presence in Season 5, which was telegraphed in the final episodes of Season 4 when Rafe became unlikely adversary-turned-potential-ally to the Pogues by joining them in the search of Blackbeard's treasure and in their vow to avenge JJ's death and take back the Blue Crown, which Chandler stole from his son before killing him.

https://deadline.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/OuterBanks4.jpg?resize=600,338

The Season 4 finale primed Chandler as Season 5's big villain, which is reinforced by Crane's promotion to series regular. In their pursuit of justice, the Pogue may rely even more on Shoupe (Moss), who has undergone an evolution over the years from a corrupt cop to an honest Sheriff sympathetic to John B. & Co.

Moss and Crane join returning series regulars Stokes, Cline, Bailey, Daviss, Starkey, Grant as well as Austin North (Topper) and Fiona Palomo (Sofia).

Across its four seasons, Outer Banks, from creators/executive producers Jonas Pate, Josh Pate and Shannon Burke, has received nearly 200M views and has been featured on the Top 10 English TV List 25 times.

"When we get to the end, I think everyone's going to be satisfied that we bring everything home and all the stories are wrapped up," Josh Pate told Deadline about Season 5.

Here are the Season 5 first-look images:

{blackbabes} WWE Superstar Jade Cargill To Make Acting Debut Opposite Jonathan Majors In Action Thriller ‘True Threat’

WWE superstar Jade Cargill is set to make her acting debut starring opposite Jonathan Majors in True Threat, a Harlem-set action thriller from director Gerard McMurray (The First Purge, Burning Sands). The movie is being produced by Alexis Garcia's CAT5 with Charlamagne Tha God, Basil Iwanyk (John Wick, Nobody) and Karen Kinney's new banner Southland Stories.

Southland Stories focuses on authentic and often underrepresented voices. True Threat will be the company's first feature project.

Cargill is the second actor attached to the film following Majors, whose casting was announced by Deadline in March. Her addition marks a major step forward for the project, which is slated to begin production this fall.

True Threat follows Special Forces operative Vernon Threat (Majors), who returns home seeking justice after his teenage son is murdered by Harlem's Apollo Kids gang. Threat infiltrates The Carter, a 20-story project building controlled by the gang, and fights his way floor by floor and boss by boss toward a confrontation with its leader and his former mentor, Shallow.

Cargill will play Meeka, a key lieutenant in the Apollo Kids and one of the film's central antagonists. Meeka controls the building's red light district and operates as a power broker inside The Carter. The role will showcase Cargill in an intense, physical and highly stylized performance space that builds on her athletic background.

Cargill joins the project following a breakout performance at WrestleMania 41 in Las Vegas. Since signing with WWE, she has emerged as one of the company's most visible new stars.

"I am excited to have Jade join us on True Threat," McMurray shared in a statement to Deadline. "She is a unique talent with a rare blend of athleticism, charisma, and control on camera. The role of Meeka requires presence and precision, and Jade brings both. I believe audiences will see a completely new side of her in this film."

The producing team added, "Our mission here is to champion new faces and new voices in action storytelling. Jade is exactly the type of dynamic talent we want to introduce to the global film audience. She is already a force in the sports and entertainment world, and we believe this is just the beginning for her on the big screen."

McMurray penned the script with Hodge K. Johnson, with action design by Larnell Stovall (The Continental). It will prominently feature 52 Blocks, a Black American martial arts style that is being brought to the screen in a major way for the first time. True Threat is the second film from CAT5 following David Ayer's A Working Man, starring Jason Statham, which opened at No. 1 at the U.S. box office in March.

Cargill holds a master's degree in child psychology and is co-owner of the Atlanta Smoke women's professional fastpitch team. She is represented by Paradigm.

{blackbabes} Bill Pullman & Rick Moranis Returning For New ‘Spaceballs’; Keke Palmer, Lewis Pullman Also Set – The Dish

L-R- Bill Pullman, Rick Moranis, Keke Palmer and Lewis Pullman

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

Bill Pullman and Rick Moranis are set to reprise their respective roles as Lone Starr and Dark Helmet in the new Spaceballs movie from Amazon MGM Studios, with Keke Palmer (One of Them Days) joining the cast, sources tell Deadline.

Amazon declined to comment, and character details for Palmer are under wraps, as is the sequel's plot. Also newly aboard in an undisclosed role is Pullman's son, rising star Lewis Pullman (Thunderbolts*), as THR was first to report this afternoon.

The addition of Moranis, though is particularly striking, as the actor hasn't been seen much on screen for decades. As announced this morning, the original film's director and star, Mel Brooks, will also feature in the cast once again, reprising his role as Yogurt. Slated for release in theaters in 2027, the film has been described by those who have not yet read the script as "A Non-Prequel Non-Reboot Sequel Part Two but with Reboot Elements Franchise Expansion Film."

Josh Greenbaum (Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar) will direct from a script by Benji Samit, Dan Hernandez, and Josh Gad, as announced in June of last year. Gad is also expected to star and will produce alongside Imagine Entertainment's Brian Grazer and Jeb Brody, Brooks, and Greenbaum, with Kevin Salter, Adam Merims, Samit, and Hernandez exec producing.

Released by MGM in 1987, the original Spaceballs is an iconic send-up of the sci-fi genre, which took inspiration from the Star Wars franchise and other classics like 2001: A Space Odyssey. The plot revolves around the evil Dark Helmet (Moranis) and President Skroob (Brooks), who attempt to steal the atmosphere of the peaceful planet Druidia, only to be thwarted by the hero Lone Starr (Pullman), his sidekick Barf (John Candy), and the Druish princess Vespa (Daphne Zuniga). Others in the cast included Joan Rivers and Dick Van Patten. The film grossed just over $38.1 worldwide but has endured over the years as a cult classic.

Otherwise best known for turns in iconic works like Independence Day and David Lynch's Lost Highway, Pullman has most recently been seen starring in series like The Sinner, as well as films including The High Note and Dark Waters. Upcoming, he has the Duffer Brothers' Netflix series The Boroughs, A24's Famous opposite Zac Efron, and more.

An icon of the '80s and '90s, Moranis rose to fame with roles in Ghostbusters, Little Shop of Horrors, the Honey, I Shrunk the Kids films and more, after writing and starring in famed Canadian sketch series SCTV. Famously, he for the most part stepped away from acting in the late '90s, focusing on raising his children following the passing of his wife, costume designer Ann Belsky. Most recently, he teamed with Ryan Reynolds on a 2020 ad for Mint Mobile.

Palmer is coming off of success with One of Them Days, a TriStar buddy comedy where she stars opposite SZA, which recently got a sequel set up for development. Next up, she'll be seen in The Pickup, Amazon's heist comedy out August 6, opposite Eddie Murphy; Aziz Ansari's Lionsgate comedy Good Fortune, out October 17; and Boots Riley's Neon pic I Love Boosters.

Pullman is repped by CAA; Moranis by Bailey Brand Management and Nelson Davis; and Palmer by 3 Arts and Hertz Lichtenstein.

{blackbabes} NBC Pilot Buzz: ‘Stumble’ Heats Up As Peacock’s ‘The Office’ Follow-Up ‘The Paper’ Mulls Broadcast Run

'The Paper'

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

NBC has some unfinished 2025-2026 comedy business — it has two outstanding comedy pilots, Stumble, and the untitled Ornelas, Keliiaa and Wilson project, and two half-hour holes to fill on the schedule come November, one behind St. Denis Medical on Monday and one behind Happy's Place on Friday.

Jeff Astrof and Liz Astrof's single-camera cheerleading pilot Stumble, headlined by Jenn Lyon, has been well received internally at NBC and has also tested well, I hear, making it a strong contender for a series pickup. With its mockumentary style, Stumble would fit right in behind the similarly shot medical comedy St. Denis Medical.

There may be another formidable contender though, and it is a descendant of the single-camera comedy series that made that style a staple, The Office. There are conversations about potentially giving The Paper, the upcoming Peacock comedy series from The Office developer Grag Daniels and Michael Koman, a run on NBC where The Office ran for nine seasons, sources said. Set in the same world as The Office, with that series' Oscar Nuñez reprising his role, The Paper is slated for a September premiere on Peacock, so it could potentially get a second window on NBC two months later.

The network already has one strong candidate for the November comedy slots (NBC's September lineup does not include comedies): The Fall and Rise of Reggie Dinkins, starring Tracy Morgan and Daniel Radcliffe. The single-camera project, executive produced by Tina Fey, was the first of three comedies to be ordered to pilot by NBC earlier this year. It was completed before the upfronts and ordered to series in May.

https://deadline.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/The-Fall-and-Rise-of-Reggie-Dinkins.jpg?resize=630,420

Stumble was the second to get a pilot pickup and the second to be delivered. The untitled project from the Rutherford Falls trio of Sierra Teller Ornelas, Jackie Kaliiaa and Bobby Wilson, an ensemble comedy set at a Native community center in Oakland, CA, was the last of the three to receive a pilot green light, so it is behind Stumble in its timeline. I hear the pilot was just finished and delivered so there is no reliable information yet as to how it will fare in internal screenings and external testings.

While filling the two November half-hour slots is a priority, that is not the only comedy launch option for 2025-26, and midseason premieres are also being considered, I hear.

{blackbabes} Regina Hall Joins Jennifer Garner In Peacock’s ‘The Five-Star Weekend’

Regina Hall (One Battle After Another, Girls Trip) joins Jennifer Garner as a series regular in Peacock's upcoming drama series, The Five-Star Weekend. Hall will play Dru-Ann Jones.

The project, created by Bekah Brunstetter (Maid, This is Us) based on the bestselling novel by The Perfect Couple author Elin Hilderbrand, had been in the works at the streamer for about a year under an overall deal Sue Naegle and Ali Krug signed with the Universal Studio Group unit for their Dinner Party Productions. The series greenlight was secured by Garner's casting as star and executive producer.

The Five-Star Weekend centers on Hollis Shaw (Garner), a famed food influencer known for her delicious recipes, impeccable taste, and warm demeanor, who suffers a devastating loss. Unable to move forward, the death starts to expose the cracks in Hollis's picture-perfect life — her strained marriage, her complicated relationship with her daughter, and her growing pursuit of validation from her followers.

In an effort to overcome grief and find herself again, Hollis gets the idea to host a weekend away at her house on Nantucket with three friends from different stages in her life: her childhood, her twenties, thirties, and one surprise fifth star. Set against a luxurious and coastal backdrop, they will mature in ways they could never imagine as boundaries are pushed and secrets are exposed.

Brunstetter serves as creator, writer, and executive producer. Beth Schacter (Billions, Super Pumped) is writer and executive producer. Naegle (Pam and Tommy, The Day of the Jackal) and Krug (Pam and Tommy, The Staircase) executive produce through their Dinner Party Productions. Hilderbrand also executive produces.

Hall is represented by Independent Artist Group.

{blackbabes} Renée Elise Goldsberry talks new album, whether ‘Hamilton’ return is an option and EGOT aspirations

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Renée Elise Goldsberry is most inspired by artists bold enough to take a career leap, even when there's no guarantee of a safe landing.

Over the years, Goldsberry spent her celebrated career surrounded by fearless risk-takers. Now, the Tony and Grammy winner, best known for her breakout role in the Broadway musical "Hamilton," is taking a bold move of her own. She's stepping into the spotlight as a solo artist: Her debut album, "Who I Really Am," was released Friday.

"I'm surrounded by friends that do really crazy, brave, 'I could fail miserably' things," said Goldsberry, whose role as Angelica Schuyler in Hamilton won her a Tony in 2016 for best featured actress in a musical. In that same year, she earned a Grammy for best musical theater album.

"They jump off cliffs, they start to fly, we get to see it and it's so inspiring that you put out an album," she said.

Goldsberry has made her presence felt in other Broadway projects including "Rent" and "The Color Purple." She's had standout work on "Girls5Eva" and "The Good Wife " and was on the daytime soap "One Life to Live."

With "Who I Really Am," Goldsberry is carving her own musical path. The album is a 13-track project filled with soul, funk, blues and gospel vibes featuring a reimagined version of her iconic "Hamilton" song "Satisfied," which was originally penned by Lin-Manuel Miranda.

In a recent interview, Goldsberry talks to The Associated Press about finding her identity through the album, whether returning to "Hamilton" is an option and aspirations for an EGOT, a term for the rare person who's won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony award during their career.

This interview has been edited for length and clarity.

___

AP: You wrote 11 songs on the album. While creating this project, what did you discover more about yourself?

GOLDSBERRY: I need to give myself license to be more than one thing. I think that's always been the case with recorded music for me. I've been writing since I was a kid. The challenge for me has always been feeling like you have to be extremely specific about a box when you're a recording artist. It has to all sound like one mood, one vibe. I had to give myself permission to not try to fit into a box that exists, or even a box that's specific. I gave myself license to express myself in all the ways it naturally comes out.

AP: You started the album process in 2020. What was your initial thoughts on re-recording "Satisfied"?

GOLDSBERRY: Somebody said to me "You could probably get a record deal and do an album if you re-record 'Satisfied.'" I said "Absolutely no." I'm absolutely not doing that. It already exists. It's perfect. The show is perfect.

AP: What shifted your thinking?

GOLDSBERRY: In the process of recording all the music, we rented a studio in Nashville. It's where Dolly Parton recorded "Jolene." It felt like all this history was there. We had all these great musicians there. We booked the studio for a week or two and we finished early, and they were going to let everybody go home. And I was like 'We might as well record this version of 'Satisfied' that I do in my concert, because we're sitting here." And these cats are amazing. We started playing. They started playing, and our minds exploded. The control booth. Our brains exploded. It was so good. Then I started singing it. I said to us "This belongs."

AP: Your "Girls5Eva" co-star Sara Bareilles wrote the song "Smiling." How was it reuniting with her?

GOLDSBERRY: I think she is one of the greatest singer-songwriters that has ever existed and might ever exist. I had the privilege of being in a concert with her. I opened for her at the Hollywood Bowl a couple of months ago. She was doing something new. I love artists and I'm one of them in this moment. But I love artists that do new things that might not work, bravely. She had orchestrated all of her music. She had a huge symphony orchestrated show. All the music that she had written.

AP: What happened next?

GOLDSBERRY: We got to see her jump off a cliff for the first time. It was one of the greatest things I ever saw in my life. I could start crying right now. It was so great. It's so brave. I'm surrounded by people like that, and it's so inspiring. They're all doing crazy things. All of them. Leslie Odom Jr. decided to go back to "Hamilton." Like that's insane.

AP: Would you ever return to "Hamilton"?

GOLDSBERRY: That's what Leslie taught us: Never say never.

AP: You're halfway to EGOT status. Is that something you feel like it's achievable?

GOLDSBERRY: I'm not going to lie, I've thought of different ways I could slip in the back door, you know what I mean? Like I have a documentary called "Satisfied" (which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival last year) about the journey in my life when I was part of the original company of "Hamilton" and also trying to raise my young family. We were like, "What original song can we put in this movie to contend for slipping in the Oscar category. ... It's possible. But I'm less interested in the results of a journey than the journey itself.

TriStar has a sequel to their sleeper comedy One of Them Days in the works with stars Keke Palmer and SZA expected to return.

The comedy opened to $11.8 million in January and did a near 5x multiple at the domestic box office, grossing $50M.

The buddy comedy follows best friends and roommates Dreux and Alyssa, who discover that the latter's boyfriend has spent all of their rent money. The two find themselves going to extremes in a race against the clock to avoid eviction and keep their friendship intact. The pic notched 94% with critics and 90% with audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. The movie before P&A cost a reported $14M.

The movie's creative team is also expected to return, Deadline can confirm. Lawrence Lamont directed the original off a screenplay by Syreeta Singleton.

Sony has a reputation for keeping its production costs low and profit margins high, particularly on titles that are counterprogramming and stoking underserved demographics, i.e., female moviegoers.

It Ends With Us, which Sony co-financed for $25M, mushroomed to a net $207M after all ancillaries in its first cycle off a global box office take near $350M. Another cash cow for Sony was the Sydney Sweeney-Glen Powell romantic comedy Anyone But You, which netted $103M off a budget of $25M before P&A after racking up $219M worldwide.

Sony currently has Karate Kid: Legends in theaters; it opened to $20.3M domestically this past weekend, and close to $50M worldwide off a $45M production cost. The movie teams Ralph Macchio and Jackie Chan from the previous Karate Kid movies.

Variety first had the news on the One of Them Days sequel.
